Kenny Smith was a first team all american, universally regarded as the best point guard in college basketball.

When he played us, we countered with Sherman Douglas, who wasn't as well known nationally but was better.
Not many teams could do that. Ditto Coleman / JR Reid, and Seikaly vs. their incredible wealth of bigs.

At one point in the first half, we even had to play little used backup PF Herman Harried [and played zone, just to buy some time -- seems ironic] in the first half, just to give DC / Rony a few extra moments of rest.

Incredible game.

It's easy to forget what a jerk Billy Packer was. Spent a lot of time whining about a hoop Rony got that he thought should have been basket interference. He was right but say it once and let it go. He just goes on and on about it.

Remember - Packer was Mr. ACC. Wake Forest guy, at heart. So he took that game personally, and sounded like a whiner when we kicked UNC's a$s.

I've probably watched that game 100 times over the years. Amazing talent, both rosters just laden with future NBA players and dripping with McD's all americans.

Watching this game it’s funny how Florida wants to play zone against us because of our athletes.
Yet we were shredding their zone with outstanding ball movement and they had to switch to man to man to have a chance. Our post play was unstoppable.

Watching this game, SU’s perimeter defense in the zone was worse than this year. Douglas was awful. They continued to give up wide open threes. It’s hard to understand with the size behind them to protect the rim. SU looks much better coached now than then.

Good post to prove to the youngn's here that SU played m2m.
Also have a large collection of vhs and dvd recordings of SU games myself to while away the mext few weeks.

That game started my dislike for UNC. It wasn’t the team; but their fans. The UNC fan behind my brother and I kept talking about how he couldn’t figure out what defense UNC was playing. After a few minutes, my brother turned around and told him,”They are playing a typical man to man. If you want to know anything else, just ask.” Everyone around us laughed. He must have been annoying everyone within earshot.

wasn’t Packer in the Klan or something? Did he rape someone? He seemed to disappear fast from the scene.

Seikaly owned Shintzus.

And then our bigs went toe-to-toe with UNC's quartet of bigs who all played in the NBA [Reid, Scott Williams, Wolf, Popson] and came out on top. One of the most incredible games I've ever attended live.
schintzus was purely business up front but all party in the back.

My favorite Schintzius story:

Early in his freshman year, a couple of youngsters approached Schintzius with the inevitable question: How's the weather up there? He spat on them and said, "It's raining." Recalling the incident, he shakes his head and says, "That may sound crude, but at the time it was hilarious."

Yes, DC's speech at the airport. Followed by "Dick Vitale Who?"

Vitale had been talking about how great NC was (as usual) & what a great player Reid was before the game.

I knew it immediately! I went to the airport with my dad after we got back from the Meadowlands, and saw it live. Then taped it later when they showed it on the news. I mentioned above that I've watched the game 100 times -- that includes the post-game stuff, which is taped after the game.

DC: "Dick Vitale who? Who? Who are we?"

Awesome reference, SpringsCuse!

The zone was not THE ZONE back then. It was the first year for the three in college, so the idea was to limit interior scoring and force perimeter shots. The 3 was not used as the weapon it is today.
