Was at the game Friday. Some thoughts:
The offensive line is run blocking really well. Linemen getting to the second level like I don’t ever recall. Good coaching, scheme and talent. Let’s just make sure the snaps improve.
Tucker is sooo good. The ability to make that first guy miss and his vision are just really special.
Love Alford. Big kid who can shed tacklers after the catch. Thought the rest of the receivers did a nice job down field blocking on running plays.
Worried that Taj is going to get frustrated in this offense. There just won’t be that many touches with Shrader running the show.
Shrader had an interesting game. He brings toughness to the position and I think that sorta matches the personality of the offense this year. Other guys rally behind that.
But toughness alone isn’t going to beat good defenses. He’s got to make better throws. His deep balls are frankly atrocious. The outs, quick screens and pocket sense are all fine. There was one play where looked off a wide open Mang and through to a covered receiver over the middle - makes me worried if he knows something we don’t about Mangs ability to catch. But we are going to need TD at some point…when we need to throw every down…which will be a tough position for DeVito.
I had no issues with Gilbert’s play calling. I thought he called a solid game. Though I wish Dino went for it on 4th and one…
Defensively, this team reminds me of Shafer’s defenses. Undersized, but lots of pre snap movement that confuses QBs. The tackling has been on point. Especially in the secondary. I know Duce got schooled a couple times, but that dude is a walking form tackling clinic. Really like what I see from Barron too. Always seemed to be around that ball.
I think this secondary is better in man than that two deep zone that Willis hit a couple times, but we didn’t play much man because of Willis’ ability to run. Thought Mikel Jones did a nice job being patient spying Willis - make some nice plays.
I wonder how many kids didn’t know that contraption that Willis kept talking into on the sideline. I haven’t seen a push button phone in forever.
Finally, there is no doubt in my mind that the new roof has changed the acoustics inside the dome. It is definitely louder. If we ever get 40k inside that place it will be deafening.
