Justin Fuentes out at VT / Brent Pry in

Must say a bit shocked by this hire...
I am not sure the last time a P5 school hired a HC I had never heard of.

This guy is 51 years old. 6 years older than Fuente.

He has never been a HC at any level. Discipline of James Franklin.

Has been coaching HS AAs for PSU for a long time. Only become a full time DC this past season.

It will be interesting to see what he can do in terms of coaching up less talented players, recruiting, building a staff, etc.

Tough having a first time HC. I would expect a long learning curve before he figures things out. If he is still around by then.

It sounds like from VT's perspective he will help keep local VA kids home, Penn St has owned that state along with NJ and PA.

He unfortunately has almost no ties to Virginia. Was a GA at VT for a couple of years. I don't see how bringing in an outsider is going to magically help VT recruit Virginia.

Penn State is dominant there. UVa and UNC are doing well. Other B1G teams are taking some of the top players out. The days of VT owning big parts of the state are almost surely over.

Especially after this hire.

It was exciting to see Wake step up and do what needed to be done to have a solid football program. Saddened to see VT end up with someone like this.

Yuck. Never heard of the guy.

Not a fan of coordinator hires from factory schools. Just me. I am sure there are plenty of successful examples I just don't like them

Same here. I feel like they’re more likely to not be successful than successful.

He’s interviewed with a lot of schools and is well regarded

I am sure he is a good coach. But there is a big difference between being an OC and a HC. Not everyone makes a smooth transition. There is risk hiring a first time HC, as we saw with GRob and Shafer.

This unknown reminds me of another B1G DC with a 3 letter last name who got a shot as a P5 head coach. A-s-h.

I hope they have similar success.

Yeah, agreed. But the info I heard on him was that he'll be a great HC. Kind of a Hafley type endorsement

He was a graduate assistant under Bud Foster. That’s the connection.

Would be even more entertaining if his last name was the past tense of pry

And he was bringing his brother Charlie along

(for John Valby fans)

While true, you can strike gold (a la Lincoln Reilly) as well. Or perhaps Coach P.

Agree. Doug Marrone was another.

But the hit to miss ratio for first time HCs is not a good one.

I hope he does well. The ACC needs VT to be a strong program.

I wonder what the P5 data says over the past decade or so re: first time HC versus the success metrics of a HC from a MAC, etc...

Market was pretty thin for active head coaches I don't think hiring what they felt was the best coordinator was a bad move.

Arkansas struck gold with Pittman.

Really hope this works out for VT

Being that we only play them once every 7 years…

The ACC needs VT to rise back to the top and be a dominant football program again. If they’re making money we are!

Read something interesting that personality/dealing with the HS coaches in Virginia is very important. Fuente was not good at that. Sounds like it was a premium want from VT.

He ended up moving to VA early in life and went to HS there.

Weird hire. I guess a little outside the box. I'd be disappointed if I was a Tech fan, especially because Fuente was a pretty splash hire when they got him.

Hey at least they didn’t have to pay big bucks to ‘Pry’ a head coach from another program. This sounds like budget hire and years of mediocrity. I’m not shedding tears hate Vermont more than any other ACC program maybe any other college program.
