Justin Fuentes out at VT / Brent Pry in

Taj was a very talented receiver who hasn’t had a QB who can get him the ball. Alford is promising but again, doesn’t have a QB who can get him the ball. Custis was formed under Babers.

Zay Flowers is a once in a generation player for BC and he’s essentially useless if you don’t have a QB. Addison leads the nation because they have a stellar QB, as for wake, out side of AT, I don’t think the other guys are that special, they benefit from a good QB as well. Seeing a theme here? Pretending like all of syracuses struggles and all of the peer team successes are in a vacuum is pretty short sighted if not outwardly biased.
Taj was talented but undisciplined. Bad drops, bad attitude. That's on Dino to fix and he didn't. Devito got him the ball more than once it just went plop into the turf. To think we shouldn't be able to compete with anyone in our conference is a defeatist attitude and means you either think we need to drop to G5 or take our place with Kansas and Rutgers. No thanks. I'll keep demanding more as a fan.

Taj is a good receiver, plain and simple. If you want to nit-pick drops then let’s talk about the drops Flowers has had this year.

Also, When did I say they couldn’t/shouldn’t compete? I said the peer schools have stellar players behind center and that will hide a lot of issues. Syracuse won 10 games with Dungey, not even an AFL quality QB, imagine if they had another Nassib. These issues are not in a vacuum, a quality QB can completely turn around a program, unfortunately Syracuse has swung and missed a couple times and struggles ensued.

Wake has 3 WRs better than any on our roster

BC has Zay Flowers who would be the most talented WR we have had since Mike Williams

Pitt’s WR Addison leads the country

These are peer teams, not Alabama

Other than Dino finding AET and the kid from Mich St as one year rentals we haven’t had anyone at wr in babers’ 6 years that I would consider above average.
None of them would play over Ishmael, Estime, or Phillips who were recruited bye the previous staff.

Reading comprehension is hard, I was using hyperbole because expecting Syracuse to have this deep stable of guys on the bench for the O-line and on defense is ridiculous as very few teams have that, and even fewer (if any) are private northeastern schools. But please, tell me more about what Syracuse offers that should put the team in a position to have all of this talented depth that you think they should have?

NC state is a southern state school, matches my description of where football is moving to a “T.” Also, 2019 NC state (despite being a better program) is a perfect example of what can happen to a better program when O-line and QBs go down, the season falls apart and blowouts ensue.
Yes reading comprehension is hard, we had 20 WR’s and 12 O Linemen but you ignore that and compare us to Alabama’s depth instead lol

Having twice as many WR’s as O linemen is bad roster management. But you think since we’re in the North East we should accept it?

A good WR will still show his talent despite QB. See FR Ishmael with AJ Long throwing to him. See Mike Williams with ARob throwing to him.

A good QB makes avg WRs look better. A good WR will make an avg QB look better. Unfortunately we have neither.

The biggest recent example of a good QB making a difference on a WR was the difference in Sean Riley from Junior to Senior year. Going from Dungey to Devito made him look like he forgot how to play. I agree with others that QB/OL has been the biggest issue in the passing game the past couple of years, think our WR's are good enough.

If you mean our current wrs, you’re correct.

If you meant Flowers, Addison or Wake’s receivers you’re on crack ;)

Outside of Tucker I’ve been pretty disappointed in the skill guys we have brought in as freshmen to develop. We’ve gotten a couple guys to transfer in (early in Dino’s tenure) but it’s been 1 season stopgaps. The jury is still out on Shrader I think he’s very elite at what he is good at but he’s not a well rounded quarterback… yet.

What about wake?

“Hyperbole” it’s a pretty commonly used rhetorical device to express the magnitude of difference between two loosely correlated things.

You’re conflating two unrelated points. So first, Having 20 WRs does not preclude you from having more lineman unless your roster is maxed out each year (they haven’t been), but my point was about quality depth, most northeastern private schools don’t have it because they aren’t winning recruiting battles against top level southern state school. Players are more likely to go to a southern SEC school even though they might be further down the death chart because of the ancillary benefits of being at a southern state school. (Facilities, relaxed academic requirements, better weather, etc.)

I’m not sure how you could possibly make that second point and completely ignore how a bad QB can limit the success of good WRs. If you can’t get the ball near the hands of your receivers, it’s hard to see how anyone could have success no matter their skill level.

What about wake?
Experience? Good luck? Striking gold on a couple guys over the last 3-4 years? I mean let’s not pretend wake is some perennial contender. They have some distinct advantages compared to Syracuse including better local talent and superior academics but they also are on a relative upswing from the very late 2000s to now following (with some pretty bad seasons in there) following nearly 30 years of irrelevancy. So when Syracuse was successful and northeast powers were possible, they were dreadful, this is a opposite side of that.

Again see Ishmael and Mike Williams. You cannot get worse QBs and they still produced. Would that production have been better with a good QB? Of course. But even with a bad QB they shined. Our current WRs haven't come close to shining. Plus, if we had a good WR Shrader would look better. You don't get back to back low passing games with a good WR. Doesn't matter who is QB.

You’re right the roster wasn’t maxed out so why not pick up a few 2 star or unranked O linemen? You say we can’t get quality depth but how about just having depth in general? We couldn’t even practice because we didn’t have a full ones and twos.

I’m sorry but I don’t buy your argument that Syracuse doesn’t have anything to offer since it’s a small private North East school.

JB has had a number of top 20 recruiting classes the past 10 years including #14 this year. What does JB have to offer Syracuse recruits that Dino doesn’t?

JB is a top 5, 10 college hoops coach of all time. He also has four of his eight that play from upstate NY :)

Oh I agree, JB is top 10 all time. But he still gets and always has gotten recruits to come here regardless of the weather and academic requirements.

Call me crazy but I think Syracuse has a lot more to offer than cuse181 is giving credit for

Wake has no advantages over us they are I believe the smallest p5 school that plays football. They virtually have no history and it's an extremely difficult school to get into. They found the perfect coach for them. There is no reason we can't be doing what they are.

27 in state kids. Also very much an "it" school for kids on the east coast these days.

Add to it:
Soon to be top notch facilities.
Far cooler mascot - Demon Deacons, Hell yeah!
Far cooler school colors.
Best helmets in FBS?

And where do those 27 in state kids fall in the recruiting ranking? They were the only Acc school behind us in the Acc recruiting rankings last year.

It's a huge base of support to build a program like they have, where kids seem to be there forever. Like we used to have when we had a large chunk of our roster from NYS.
