Total benching seems like an over reaction…and timed with Melo’s tweet…eh.

But can we be frank here? Melo’s tweet was absolute BS helicopter parenting. He can’t do that.
Agreed - the tweet was bad, and if the benching was any sort of retaliation, that’s even worse (and totally out of character for Red).

At the end of the day, he’s a bench player here this year. But too often, when he’s in, he’s dominated the ball like he’s a top scoring option. His rope if anything, has been gracious.

Ideally, he’d have been shown the bench periodically when that occurred.

Agreed. Kiyan is a freshman. Most frosh have ups-and-downs.

Really, Kiyan's season has unfolded about how I expected. He's a high volume shot taker, but not the most efficient offensive player / can be a ball stopper. I watched him several times in HS, and that was how he played at that level, too.

If anything, his hot start was the aberration.

I still think Kiyan can be a very good college player. He'll have to get more efficient. You can't shoot 40% / 28% and be a high volume shot taker.

Melo could have added a lot of weight to any discussion about canning Autry last year. In many of my posts near the end of last year, I expressed horror at what could happen if Kiyan was on the team and camp Melo realized that Red is completely incapable. It would be really unfortunate if a rift is created between Melo and the program.

If Melo stood up during the search process and said "Gerry is the guy, and I'm helping with NIL and marketing"...

I would still be pretty skeptical. But I could talk myself into being excited again.
Even if Gerry is here Kiyan needs to improve...a lot.

It would have helped the players but Red’s coaching issues were inevitably going to be revealed. Still wouldn’t be in the dance.
Tough to say. I truly believe we would have been a different team

I wonder if Red didn’t insert JJ back into the starting lineup immediately and rolled with Kiyan until either Kiyan loses the job himself or JJ seized it back on his own. How different things would be. I know it was inferior competition, but the rhythm we saw in those first 3 games was different.

The kid sucks. He plays hero ball and thinks his azz weighs a ton because of his last name. He’s not beyond getting benched. Especially when he is definitely not helping on the court. EARN your minutes son!
Explain him being taken out of the starting lineup after 3 good to great performances. Though against inferior competition the second JJ was healthy.

Red's really going to poison the relationship with the Anthony family on the way out, and we're going to let that happen, aren't we?
I dont think so. Once Red is gone, who is Melo going to be mad at?

In conference play, Kiyan has 10 games and 158 minutes. He's got 11 rebounds, 7 assists, and 6 TOs. Total.

He does have 54 FGA though with a .398 eFG% and 23.8% from three on 21 attempts.

Since nobody else has said it (at least I don’t think), I will: what happened with Kiyan today? I understand Red said it was a coach’s decision, but the timing after Melo’s comment just seems interesting. I’m also aware that Kiyan hasn’t been good, but he’s still our leading scorer off of the bench.
I don’t like decision to sit him today.

Look at how the team did after a big win vs Tennessee. One win, no matter how significant, was never going to change the trajectory of this team with this coach.

Has it though? Yes, he's shown his first inclination is to look for a shot and he's weak defensively, but most of his minutes have come with a very offensively challenged lineup and one can argue he's played the role of bench scorer pretty well relative to other guys in their roles.

The three man sub rotation he's part of makes a strange lineup. Any minutes he's played with Souare have basically been 4 on 5 since the best Souare can scrape together is a lob attempt every 4 games. Typically Anthony comes on when our best point guard, George, comes off, so he doesn't benefit from playing in our best offense. Leaving Kiyan with JJ as the other guard, who very much is more comfortable as an on ball guard (still, as a senior) and isn't someone we really want kicking to on the perimeter anyway. Betsey is a good option to pass to for threes and when White is on the floor he's not a zero on offense, but his offensive game is mostly rim running. So who on that lineup do you want taking shots more than Kiyan? JJ if he's driving effectively (not consistent)? Betsey if we can get him an open look? White for an alleyoop? That's the list. The fact Kiyan has played as well as he has should be a credit to him instead of him getting slagged for still needing some refinement as a freshman.

And I don't want to say that Melo can do no wrong but Melo sacrificed his personal finances to build us the Melo Center and he trusted his son and legacy to us. He's done something nobody else in program history has done and that's still not enough for him to get the benefit of the doubt from our "fans." Just a baffling lack of acknowledgement and respect for the resources and relationships needed to build the program back.

Wow, this is beyond spot on. It’s important you’re highlighting that there could be more to this than just increased competition, but the situations he is put into. Because early on against the weakest part of our schedule, he delivered as a starter when he needed too and was efficient.

Entire situation is a stinking travesty at all levels.

First step on road to recovery ... Fire Autry tonight!
