Kiyan Anthony DNP vs Virginia

Why bench Kyian gosh I’ve always liked Red bug he cannot coach a lick guess he had to show one more time he was boss but I hope they fire his ass tonight this just put the nail in the coffin

What’s the efficiency on the other freshmen?

Without digging it up I'd assume Kiyan and White are operating a bit below normal for their prospect range. Certainly better than some, but below the average.

I guess my point was more that the "ceiling" for these range of freshman is not dominance. They can be decently solid (a threshold White and Anthony have struggled to be at times) but they shouldn't be expected to dominate either.

I haven’t been substantially invested in SU hoops news in the past couple of weeks, but was there another tweet by Carmelo other than the “SMFH” thing after Carolina?

It would be hard to imagine Red would ‘bench’ Kiyan as a petty reaction to just that. I agree–surely there had to be more from Kiyan himself.

If the kid played so much up to now, it was because Red thought Kiyan could help us win games. What could have happened for Red to think that’s no longer true or that he had been wrong all along? Unlikely this DNF was just an incidental aberration. Kiyan looked ‘disengaged’ on the bench… if “body language” is a thing.

Either way, the level of dysfunction in this program is at a disturbingly epic level. I’m kinda disgusted. Losing games is one thing. This goes beyond.
The “smfh” tweet is the only one. Red is a bad basketball coach, but I don’t think he’s a petty person or whatever one would have to be to bench a kid over that. He’s dealt with much worse. And kid’s don’t control their parents. JJ’s and Betsey’s and Judah’s dads have said worse. I would bet a lot of money Kiyan did something on his own last week that got him stapled to the bench.

That’s what I’d like to believe, but we also just saw last week that someone associated with a former player said Red intentionally tarnished Mintz and his draft potential, so I don’t know what to believe about who Red is ‘off screen.’ Sucks when you can’t trust anything.

What could tarnish mintz's draft potential more than video of footage of mintz playing basketball

It should matter that he doesn't deserve to play
Actually neither does JJ as a third year senior. In reality he should be a 10-12 minute player on a good team. On one of our great teams teams JJ would be mostly a DNP.
Yet he is 30+ Minutes on this team, that really tells you how far this program has fallen.
It's going to be a long road back.

Be better.

It was a post with substance, backed with factual information. Debate the premise, versus making it/taking a personal shot, especially at someone it ‘sounds like’ you don’t know personally.

You still managed to get a couple of likes (unsurprisingly) though to add to your trophy shelf. Good for you!
You clearly don't enjoy my posts. I support your crusade to fight back against my tyranny and mistreatment of other posters.

Alright, a little late to the party but I wanted to read all the posts thus far before commenting. My quick thoughts for what it's worth...

1. No way is Red punishing Kiyan for his dad's comments. I'm really surprised some really think so. Think about how Kiyan has been playing recently. Really average to poor. He was visibly upset last game and ended up sitting for the 2nd half. This wasn't about Melo's comments. This has been brewing.

2. Kiyan is a poor man's JJ at this point. He really is. At least JJ tries to move the ball and occasionally looks for people. This board tends to throw a lot of hate on JJ, and some understandable, but Kiyan has been worse. Hopefully he will get better (and I believe he will), but right now he's quite mid at best.

3. The relationship between Melo is strong and this year isn't going to sour any of that. If Autry were staying another year, maybe. Thank gawd he's not so I think Melo/Kiyan will be able to eventually flush this season and begin looking at next year differently, once we know the next head coach.

What’s sad is how predictable this whole situation was. Kiyan coming here was fraught w/ risk, and the odds of it working out given Red’s and Kiyan’s limitations were very slim from the start.

Eh a little revisionist history. There were a few - a few - on this board who said pump the brakes on Kiyan, but most did not. Heck some thought he was Moten 2.0.

You sound like that guy that likes to remind everyone when the lottery gets really big that you still have to pay taxes on it.
You twisted fact into a personal attack.
Nice.

You made it seem like Carmelo was starving or put his dreams on hold because he built the Colossus.

In some ways this is a product of the current environment, paying players and the total lack of loyalty from teams toward players and players toward teams. Kiyan is a decent freshman averaging 9 ppg with too many expectations from himself, his father and fans. I think he shows signs of potential. In the old days, he could sit more, learn and improve. By the time his junior year comes, he could be a really good player. In today’s world there is no patience from any stakeholder and no loyalty. Too much pressure to be mature on day one but maturity involves seasoning. All that said, Red will be gone next year and Kiyan will likely be gone too. I am losing interest in college sports… it is no longer about college students.

That's not what I said at all.

I probably hung in longer than most posters about giving AA the benefit of the doubt until it became too painfully obvious that this season was off the rails and beyond hope. The rights and wrongs of Melo's tweet and AA's reaction are simply not relevant. Kiyan got caught in the middle and that should not have happened.

Yeah, Kiyan hasnt exactly earned more minutes than he has been receiving, but nonetheless, when you have a lame duck coach and a hopeless season, you get some minutes for a kid who at least has future potential and do not give him a DNP because of outside issues. What is the excuse for Sadiq only getting three minutes ?

I hate to say this, but AA needs to go NOW. Whoever becomes the interim coach needs to be given a mandate to develop the future. More minutes for guys who we would want to come back and who might come back.

First, what an awful picture of Red in that article.
He looks like an arrogant ass.
Second, freshmen improve with good coaching.
Freshman tend to regress with bad coaching,
Thus, the apparent regression of White and Anthony

Number one thing we need in a new head coach is someone who is actually a good coach, who knows the Xs and Os and can make game time adjustments.
Good coaching trumps great recruiting every time.
You can have truly talented players but they can’t grow without good coaching.

As someone posted in the Siena article, does anyone think with the same talent that Red could have orchestrated a two year turnaround from 4 wins to 17 currently that Gerry is doing. I don’t. Red would probably still be fighting for a 10th win right now.
He just doesn’t have it and I wish to God they would let him go now before any more damage is done. One of the assistants has to be a better game time coach than him.

Then do a national search but focus on coaching ability, not recruiting.
A good coach can improve players but Red shows what a lack of coaching ability can do with good talent. Absolutely nothing!

I am a season ticket holder who honestly wonders if I will go to any more games with the exception of the season finale.

Great post.

Kiyan has been awful for weeks and really doesn't deserve any minutes. Unfortunately, if we benched every player who's been underperforming we'd have 2 guys on the court. But Kiyan's play has been particularly egregious.

He's not capable of playing ACC basketball right now. If he was Kiyan Smith, and we had a competent coach, he'd have been stapled to the bench a long time ago.
