Kiyan Anthony DNP vs Virginia

In some ways this is a product of the current environment, paying players and the total lack of loyalty from teams toward players and players toward teams. Kiyan is a decent freshman averaging 9 ppg with too many expectations from himself, his father and fans. I think he shows signs of potential. In the old days, he could sit more, learn and improve. By the time his junior year comes, he could be a really good player. In today’s world there is no patience from any stakeholder and no loyalty. Too much pressure to be mature on day one but maturity involves seasoning. All that said, Red will be gone next year and Kiyan will likely be gone too. I am losing interest in college sports… it is no longer about college students.
Fantastic post. I don’t necessarily agree with the Kiyan likely being gone part though.

Spot on

Great post.

Kiyan has been awful for weeks and really doesn't deserve any minutes. Unfortunately, if we benched every player who's been underperforming we'd have 2 guys on the court. But Kiyan's play has been particularly egregious.

He's not capable of playing ACC basketball right now. If he was Kiyan Smith, and we had a competent coach, he'd have been stapled to the bench a long time ago.
Which two guys ?

Kiyan needs to improve his lateral movement and put on 20 pounds of muscle or he’s not sniffing the nba. He’s got a lot of work to do. Will he put in the effort or sulk?

Which two guys ?

Out of all the guys that have played more than 200 minutes we have three guys with a PER over 15 (an average player)

Kingz just above and Donnie and Kyle in the low 20s.

We have four guys that are in the good or above average or higher category for TS%:

Betsey, Kingz, Donnie and Kyle.

I’d argue Donnie, Kyle and Kingz are our guys even tho Donnie had a bad game yesterday, obviously.

Kingz and Betsey should have been starting the whole time.

When you've lost Johnny Thunderbird...

Unless there was a rule violation, it was tone-deaf...and I don't think Kiyan has played well at all. Just put him in for a few minutes. There was no upside to playing Zephyr.
These videos and posts are getting a ton of coverage in what is already a disastrous season.

Kiyan has played like a freshman. What has been disturbing is that you haven’t seen his bad habits improve. He still stops the ball, takes bad shots and doesn’t play good defense. But I am very confident he can keep getting better. As another poster pointed out, freshman used to get more time to get better. The kid is a hard worker. With the right coaching, he will be a very good college player.

So I don’t blame Red for not playing him as much. But to sit him out and embarrass the kid was unnecessary. Somehow he went from being good enough to play 20 minutes a game to not being able to get in the game. The decision to give him a DNP was an unforced error that unnecessarily put the program in the news for the wrong reasons.

Plus, Red hasn't used the bench as a motivator all year. He chooses yesterday and Kiyan Anthony, of all people, to make a point? Come on.

First, what an awful picture of Red in that article.
He looks like an arrogant ass.
Second, freshmen improve with good coaching.
Freshman tend to regress with bad coaching,
Thus, the apparent regression of White and Anthony

Number one thing we need in a new head coach is someone who is actually a good coach, who knows the Xs and Os and can make game time adjustments.
Good coaching trumps great recruiting every time.
You can have truly talented players but they can’t grow without good coaching.

As someone posted in the Siena article, does anyone think with the same talent that Red could have orchestrated a two year turnaround from 4 wins to 17 currently that Gerry is doing. I don’t. Red would probably still be fighting for a 10th win right now.
He just doesn’t have it and I wish to God they would let him go now before any more damage is done. One of the assistants has to be a better game time coach than him.

Then do a national search but focus on coaching ability, not recruiting.
A good coach can improve players but Red shows what a lack of coaching ability can do with good talent. Absolutely nothing!

I am a season ticket holder who honestly wonders if I will go to any more games with the exception of the season finale.

The book is out on Kiyan, it's really nothing more than that. We're playing better teams with more mature players.

Although Kiyan had not played well, no one really knows why he didn't play. It could literally be any reason, from sickness or injury to school or personal issues. I highly doubt that it was simply to make a statement about his play. More than likely he lashed out at a frustrated fan/student or perhaps a teacher. Again, speculation. I can only imagine what it has been like for him to adjust from being born into wealth, always having the best of everything and being placed in winning situations to all of a sudden being here, in a losing situation. How many people unfairly blame him for losses and telling him he sure isn't his dad. Sometimes ego, and to a certain extent entitlement, can lead to bad decisions that something like a benching is a great way to learn lesson and to show others they are being heard.

Then say "it was a minor rule violation."

could have, or could have just said exactly what he said, it was a coaches decision. Sometimes you can teach a lesson without embarrassing to much. Again, no one knows the whole reason behind it. We just know there is probably more.

We've got issues and it isn't too pleasant for a longtime Syracuse fan (when I was a teenager my neighbor would let us slide through the turnstiles gratis at Manley Field house without a ticket) to watch these games. But we'll be back. We have some great assets: the dome, our history and a conference we can get noticed in if we play well. Of course, now money plays a significant role so the ground has shifted.

I don't know if it's my untrained eye or what, but I watched 73 year-old Rick Pitino-led St. John's fiercely battle #2 Connecticut (22-1) yesterday. And what a battle it was. That game was played at such a high level of intensity. I don't know if I've seen that from the Orange this year. St. John's beat Connecticut at Madison Square Garden where we used to dominate and call our home away from home. It'll be curious to see if we can (as the Beatles would say) get back to where we once belonged.
I mentioned a while ago that we should hire Pitino and I was laughed at. He would turn Syracuse around in his first season.

please tell us more
Nothing just pure speculation. But realistically I wouldn’t be surprised if they have the guy already. Even when they gave Autry a 3rd year, I’m operating on the idea that there is a good chance he is going to fail. That is because we underperformed last year even with the talent we had. That team had enough to have a winning record atleast. And yes it does matter even if they missed the tournament because as a fan you want to watch a product where you can say they got the best out of what they had. I would love for someone to argue that they did last season. Why go through with this year in the first place? This year showed Syracuse has more resources and commitment for the next guy and cleared any doubt that talent was holding Autry back. The job is arguably at its peak attractiveness right now in terms of the post Boeheim era Syracuse Basketball program. Not after 2023, 2024, or 2025. How that compares to the field I guess we will find out. They have to hit on the next one, they just have to.

At the end of the day, he’s a bench player here this year. But too often, when he’s in, he’s dominated the ball like he’s a top scoring option. His rope, if anything, has been gracious.

Ideally, he’d have been shown the bench periodically when that occurred. It hasn’t happened…with anyone.

Total benching seems like an over reaction…and timed with Melo’s tweet…eh.

But can we be frank here? Melo’s tweet was absolute BS helicopter parenting. He can’t do that.
Agree 100% on every one of those comments, particularly the last sentence.

I wondered about this potential problem when SU signed Kiyan. How would it go with dad if his son's PT was not to his liking? Would Autry have the stones to reduce his PT if warranted? How would the other players react if they sensed Kiyan received favorable treatment because of his name?

Here we go again with the father/son(s) dynamic. smh

Exactly. Perfectly stated.

Nobody believes that Freeman didn't start due to "matchups". I just assume that something also happened off the court or behind the scenes with Kiyan and yesterday was the result.

Sometimes team matters are better handled within the team rather than getting too specific publicly.

The unfortunate result is that fans create urban legends for the cause, rip the player, the coach, etc. Look, Kiyan is a freshman with a lot of upside. Still he has struggled. We all know that. Red has struggled and will be gone at the end of the season. We all know that too, but I respect keeping things like this in-house instead of putting an even bigger microscope on the whole thing.

Red kept it in-house instead of talking publicly about Benny Williams ripping urinals out of walls or Copeland pushing Griff, not going to class, etc.

Kiyan didn't play and I'm sure that both he and Melo know the reason why. Hey, maybe it really was "matchups" but I don't think that for a second. Either way, it's a team issue and none of my business except for morbid curiosity. And that isn't a good reason.
