Kiyan Anthony RETURNING

I was impressed by Melos comments about what he needed to work on. He gets it. I think he needs to be coached tougher than he was before as well.
Yep, Carmelo is the anti-Lebron when it comes to soberly assessing his son's hoops abilities.

The one thing Red did properly last season was cut Kiyan's minutes in conference play. He barely deserved the minutes he got, IMHO.

I don't think starting is a lock, and I think Melo knows that.

Anthony and Sadiq needed this past year and this summer to knock AAU Ball out of their game. They need to learn to win and do the little things that help the team while sacrificing their style if needs be.

Neither was dominating against good teams, but showed flashes of real ability at times. (Just like all promising freshmen). I like Anthony's offense and he needs to improve his defense intensity. Him driving the ball with hesitation moves is awesome to watch. For Sadiq, its staying mentally in the game after playing someone who is equal to him and not being the first, second or even third option on offence. When things bread down and on the break he can get quick points, now he needs to learn how to play within a structured set on offense,

Both are very promising players. Lets see the freshman to sophmore jump!!

GO CUSE

His free throw shooting woes are entirely mental. His shooting form is fine. If he starts the year by consistently making free throws, I honestly think this could lead to a snowball effect that increases his overall confidence and productivity.

Good post. I also think based on what Gerry said in one of his media appearances, Kiyan will have more help if he gets stuck in the lane like he often did this past season.

I’m glad he is back (mostly due to his last name) but if anyone that watched him last year, besides the 3 games against 330ish NET ranked teams, thinks he is automatically going to start because he is now a sophomore, I just don’t see a world were that happens. He needs a lot of work.

i like kiyan and im glad he came to the cuse

its impossible for me to objectively evaluate him as a player...im willing to give him more slack than pretty much any other player, bc of the legacy

i just hope he can figure it out - get stronger get better on defense, learn to take better shots and improve his shooting percentages etc

one thing i think he really needs to do is get bigger legs...he has some of the thinnest legs i have ever seen in a ncabb player, if not ever...its the structure as well - just doesnt look athletic

hopefully he can bulk up

If Kiyan can get stronger, meaning put about 210 lbs of muscle on his frame, and hone his 3-pt %, he will be a much better player. He’ll be able to withstand the contact in the lane, post-up when the match-ups present themselves, and make teams pay when they try to keep him out of the lane. He has the court awareness and an understanding of the game to be an exceptional player. He is smooth with the rock, he just doesn’t have the strength yet. His game is very similar to that of Lawrence Moten’s, but Moten’s strength and hoops IQ were so much more advanced at the same age. I see great days ahead for Kiyan under GMac’s staff, whether he starts or not.

I don’t think he can put on 210lbs of muscle.

But I mostly agree.

Kiyan Anthony's return getting mentioned on Dusty and Danny
It also was mentioned on PTI on Tuesday's show with the 23rd anniversary of our natty featured in the "Happy Anniversary" segment. They added -- now Gerry McNamara is being reunited with Carmelo via his son who is returning. Hat Tip to BillSU for posting about this in his Happy Anniversary Thread on Tuesday.

I posted this in the Mike Tirico as commencement speaker thread after someone posted about Melo's speech last year. Worth posting here also for anyone who hasn't seen it (and those who have but want to see it again). Something for Kiyan to aspire to.

I dream of Kiyan being a driver before he's a shooter because I think he is such a gifted finished around the rim. Like Pete said though, if he's going to do that, he better put on some weight because he got pushed around on O and D this year.

I guess it's good to have the son of an alltime legend stick around, but he has to make major strides to even be considered as a rotation player if we're expecting to improve enough to make the tournament. A lot of people above are worried about his strength, but that can be improved. I'm more worried about his obvious lack of quickness and how slow he is... these attributes are a lot harder to improve on than bulking up.

A really big thing for him is learning to consistently keep a neutral and lower defensive stance when defending the ball handler on the perimeter. He is caught either too high or giving a driving lane by not staying neutral and low. While his footspeed is an issue, if he continues to get stronger and commit to being more fundamentally sound he can be an ok defender and use his size to his advantage by not making it easy for the ball handler.

He actually does a fairly decent job against forwards in the mid post( not unlike his old man) as a defender and can hold his ground. He also needs coaching that push him to pay attention to the little details and coaching that gets the defense organized as a whole.

While it was part of a specific game plan, the drop defense GM used vs Duke was well executed and effective as they shut down the driving lanes while not getting too deep to be unable to close out on shooters. Between the fundamentals and a team defense that’s organized and avoids putting too many guys on an island- it could really help Kiyan a lot.

Honestly with his Dad's tutelage, I was shocked how weak and slow he was. Kid seemed unprepared for the hard part.

Eh, he got bigger and better in his last few years of hs. I think he was further behind the curve as far as filling out and being an athlete than people realize. I didn't think he was a P4 player just 3 years ago. Look at his tape from early in his hs years compared to his Sr. year, there was a big leap. Some players take longer. Didn't Rautins and Buddy have a similar trajectory?

Maybe I’m misremembering, but it seemed as if he never looked for help and was intent on getting his shot up no matter what.

Yes and no. Sometimes he did sometimes he became a black hole. There was very little leadership off the floor or on the floor which didn’t help those situations. As the year progressed nearly everyone spent more time looking for their own vs setting things up.

It may of seemed like that but if you go to the early games when he started and one game late in the season he got into the flow of the offense and play pretty well. Through a large portion of the season during hockey line changes the was little if any flow. Same could be said about Sadig. In Vegas, he was solid, in the flow focused playing with the starters. It’s often who you are playing with, game situation, shot clock a lot of things that determine how a player performs. Let’s see how it plays out for both the very good freshmen play in year 2.

I'm going to keep banging the drum here - look at the lineups he played with. Who was he going to look for that was a viable shooting threat? Betsey on the perimeter. Sadiq on a lob. And... that's it. So many of his minutes came with Souare being an actual zero on offense and JJ doing JJ thangs.

Kiyan took bad shots and needs much better judgment, no doubt. He absolutely needs to use his own gravity to get guys better looks. But the lineup most of his minutes came on sucked and had extremely limited scoring options.

For sure. Context matters. He also had a number of offensive moves way ahead of where he should be.

And then he just stopped trying once the season went sideways. Like a lot of guys.

He needs to get in better shape. Needs to work on his tunnel visi0n (which I think was more environment driven than anything with our coaching and team) and he at least needs to try on D.

But he has talent. He isn't coasting off his last name like Bronny.

Just think it is always a concern when the negatives are strength speed and athleticism. You saw in the tournament how high motor and physical the college game is at the highest level. Others have referenced freshman who started slow like Kris Joseph and Dion, but those guys were plus athletes from day 1. I think he can be a serviceable bench piece, but the ceiling for him feels low unless he proves he has a lot more in the tank as an athlete. Could easily see his shooting, IQ, even defensive skills improving, but how often have we seen a significant jump in athleticism from a young recruit?
