3 more years of Jesse will be better than 1 year of Kofi trying to improve his draft stock

With Kofi we are an absolute threat to win the national championship next season. Him surrounded with all our shooters would be awesome to watch. I’d trade that for 3 years of Jesse in a NY minute.

Tough call. Kofi is a beast. But, if he just wants to show off for the NBA, it may hurt team chemistry, which seems REALLY good right now. Of course, none of this matters, because there is no way we get him, but fun to speculate during the slow summer months.

This is one of those crazy modern game anomalies. I feel like 20 yrs ago and Kofi would have been fed the ball non stop and put up 25/14 in college and been a number one pick. Now he is in his third year looking for a team or going pro but is not very high on draft boards. Guys who have more perimeter skills and flexibility at the 5 position are what teams want. Somebody like Ayton is the idea center given his mobility and ability to play around the post or in the mid post more while running the floor like a PF/SF.

Kofi to Kentucky would be the ultimate recruit over. Oscar Tshiebwe is a talented big who left West Virginia for Kentucky and expects to start. I can't see him being happy or how Cal can explain bringing Kofi onboard. I also can't see him waiting another year or playing minuscule minutes behind Kofi.

Maybe. Tshiebwe is 6-9 260. Cockburn is 7 ft 285. He would play next to Tshiebwe not in front of him the way I see it.

At Illinois he was surrounded with some very good players and they didn't win the NC, so I'm not sure why you would say that. The kid's a beast no doubt, but that doesn't always translate to wins.
This is just me saying this, but I enjoy watching kids develop/grow - I'm not crazy about the rent-a-player option. Bigs usually take longer to develop and I think Jesse is going to have a nice growth spurt this year. We shall see.

Underwood is good but not great all the same. He clearly can recruit, or bring in great assistants who can recruit but for the talent they had, they lost a lot of games and looked completely lost vs Loyola despite the fact they had the type of team that should have been able to handle them.

It would not surprise me one bit if this is just another 3-6 yr flash in the pan for them and they are back to being on the wrong side of the Bubble every year. They no doubt mattered from the mid 80s through the early 2000s but have been in the shadows since then for the most part.

I enjoy watching the players grow aswell, but if given the opportunity to add a 7 footer averaging 18&10, its hard to say "sorry, we have jesse edwards". now we're not getting kofi, so we have no choice but to hope jesse takes a leap, but point still stands.

I hear you, but JB needs to have a program and not just a 1 yr team. What would the rent a player do for Jesse and Frank’s growth? Who knows, but I’m guessing it wouldn’t help. This program has been unstable for a few years now, I’m hoping JB steadies the ship (as much as he can in today’s environment) before he steps down.

He won’t come here but he is exactly the type of player if a good coach has him will be a difference maker.

i agree in most cases, but there’s certain players you have to make exceptions for and i think kofi is one of them. and while i think jesse can make a leap, at the end of the day he still averaged less than 2 a game on 46% shooting when the only shots he’s taking are within 3 feet of the basket. kofi would give us a monumental upgrade even if jesse makes a jump.

It would be fascinating to try to make that work. It definitely could work. If a shooter can't get free coming off a double screen from those mammoths, then there is an issue.

It depends on what he is looking for. I hear you but there are lots of good coaches. If walks in and wants to be a leader, help a team win and move up the draft rankings then yeah it's a no brainer. If he wants to be the anything and everything for a team so he ensures that the NBA is looking at him as a first round pick, then he should follow Orlando to UK. I'm not saying you turn down the player, just if all he is doing is trying to find a better program to be his agent then it's possible the one year rental backfires. You always take the player of that caliber without question.. It certainly can work against you though.

I hear you but when we are talking UK.. Cal is about featuring kids more than winning. It just so happens one helps do a lot of the other when everyone is a 5 star recruit. Also- Cockburn played 27 mpg the past two years. Even at 30 MPG, if you give 10 at C then 10-15 playing together... It would be interesting to see it nonetheless.

I agree. Admitting that Cockburn would be an upgrade does not mean one dislikes Jesse or Frank. I like them both, a lot. But, Cockburn is a great college center. He would be an upgrade this year.
