Reese was part of Dan Mullen’s 1st recruiting class at Florida along with Chris Bleich & Kyle Pitts, who enters his 5th NFL season next fall.

I was wondering that myself. He had 5 passes defended while at Cal, but that could mean dropping back into coverage, or tipping balls at the line of scrimmage.

They should be different stats.

Former Cal linebacker David Reese is transferring to Syracuse, he announced on Instagram Monday night. Reese has seven years of NCAA experience with Florida and the Golden Bears.

Former Cal linebacker David Reese announced on Instagram Monday night he’s transferring to Syracuse. Reese has played seven collegiate football seasons, spending 2018-22 at Florida before transferring to the Golden Bears before the 2023 season. The linebacker is eligible for an eighth season because he redshirted in 2018, received an extra COVID-19 year and has medical redshirts for injuries from 2019 and 2021.

Across his tenure at Cal, Reese registered 55 tackles and 11 sacks. While listed as a linebacker, Reese is primarily an edge rusher. He only dropped back into coverage on 37 snaps last year, per Pro Football Focus. Reese registered a 69.0 PFF grade last season, with his highest clip coming as a pass rusher (71.1 grade).

David has the ability to line up as a DE or as an LB. He gives Coach ERob a player with similar flexibility to Fadil Diggs.

We saw Fadil line up on the DL and fall into coverage a bunch last season. That is a nice weapon to have in your arsenal.

So many play calls these days are based on defensive alignment. Doing this can mess up an offense.

Good to have someone who can put pressure on the QB and play LB/handle pass coverage. I assume he will be a good leader for some of the young LBs as well.
