Lemoyne Postgame

Bell showing something off the bounce is encouraging. Davis can play. Need to see more Choppa and less Taylor. Need to see more Petar as well.

Need to see what Chance can do and Choppa needs minutes for sure. Also if JJ isn’t going to be efficient shooting the ball then he is hurting us. Hands down to me he is the key in terms of who must be light years better in game 2.

He needs to be more of the leader. This is his team and he needs to show it. He’s got so much talent but disappears too much.

Also if Lucas and Carlos shoot any more 3s they should be pulled. They’re not our shooters for a reason. God.

Seriously though, define "so much talent" for me. From all the data/footage I've seen on him to date, where has it been? His shooting touch appears average at best, same with his handle. I guess it's his defensive prowess perhaps? Oh wait...

If he truly had "so much talent," fact is, just as cream does, it would've certainly risen to the top by now.

I think last night’s game thread was understandably as miserable and panicked as I can recall, which says a lot given the last decade.
-on the bright side we did not make three-pointers, missed a ton of free throws, turned the ball over and still scored 86 points. It feels like this team will score.
-Also I think Donnie definitely had some first night jitters. He had some tremendous looks in the second half that he turned down when they went zone. When he gets more aggressive, which should happen quickly, that will be a big help. He had 11 rebounds last night and it feels like he is only scraping the surface there. I liked how he would get a defensive rebound and turn and pass or dribble to get us quickly out on the break.
-we were told that Bell had matured. I didn’t see that last night. Celebrating when we are down four to Lemoyne and not getting back on defense is absurd. Playing 33 minutes and getting one point and one rebound is almost unfathomable.
-Carlos really made me nervous last night. He was playing incredibly fast with no apparent plan. he did not get the ball to guys in position to score. He was absolutely torched on defense repeatedly. Given that we don’t seem to have a back up plan at point guard you have to hope that this was just a bad night.
-if I were Cuffe and I was not getting minutes that were going to Taylor I’d be thinking about redshirting and hitting the road. Taylor is another one of those guys who should not be shooting three-pointers as it is an effective turnover.
-A lot of new players made it forseeable that it could take some time for this team to mesh. But our defense was so bad against a team that didn’t shoot over their heads that I can understand the angst and worry among the fanbase. I can only thank God that we pulled out that win because sitting on a loss to Lemoyne for eight days would’ve been unbearable.
-last Red has to figure out who can play on this team and get a rotation, so the players can be familiar with each other. It almost felt like he treated the first half as an extension of the exhibition season.
-the Colgate game should tell us a lot. we’ll feel a lot better with a win over them.

Wait - what?
He had 20 points

We aren’t good. Is what it is. Talent level needs an overhaul. Grind it out this year.

It's pretty early. Autry's team got better as the year went on. Boeheim's teams used to start hot and then cool off every January/February.

I didn’t see a team that didn’t respect their opponent. I saw a team of players that are both poor defenders and also don’t know what they’re supposed to do.

I saw a team that couldn't buy a layup early, and threw the ball away early. They worked their way back and won the game. Built some character, I would hope.

I will probably end up watching this game again. I was too busy laughing and crying to pay close attention to things. I really need to see if we have a talent issue or a coaching issue. If it is both then how much is coaching versus talent?

I saw a lot of confusion on offense and then on defense, I saw zero help defense which screams coaching. Then I saw a lot of players like Carlos who were talked by the board about being an excellent defender getting blown by on that side of the ball at will.

There is a lot of cause for concern after that game.

Yes, help defense was weak. Most of that was Donnie, although Eddie was not great defensively, either.

Two glaring weaknesses defensively tonight that have to be addressed immediately. Carlos got abused and got in foul trouble.

There is no one to rim protect when anyone gets beat off the dribble. Literally no weakside help defense.

Red is going to have to steal some minutes this year with Naheem and a 2-3. He needs to do this to keep Carlos out of foul trouble. JJ at point doesn’t work.

Lots of the other issues can be addressed. It’s looked like Nov 2009 all over again.

But that was highly disappointing.

Yep, Naheem should get one rotation each half, just to change the dynamics. Donnie needs work on his defensive, but I think he'll get better.

JJ is the best we have as the backup PG right now, Jake. Cuffe and Lucas Taylor don't appear to be making a difference yet.

I hate to say it but I think this team is better off playing zone a lot more. Unless our Gs really step up their D we will get abused in league play.

Yeah, Jake said the same thing. You guys are probably right, but it's still the learning part of the season. We will continue to improve for probably the next couple months, so long as people don't get hurt. It would be great if Westry can come back. We need another ball handler badly.

they scored 86 points going 4-22 from 3 and missing 11 free throws. Honestly I’m encouraged by all that. They missed tons of shots around the bucket too. What I’m not encouraged with was the defense. Complete opposite of what I saw at practice. Not much pressure on the ball and intensity. I get first game jitters but man oh man. Bells defensive play at the end though was great. Take the win and move on for now…
Cal St Northridge dropped 97 on them tonight. Dolphin D is a work in progress.

How do you not respect your opponent in game one when you haven't been to the tournament in years? This isn't a good excuse.
Nevertheless... They definitely came out treating Lemoyne like another exhibition game.

Red's funky lineups, in game coaching decisions and the players intensity all seemed to me to indicate they expected this to be an easy game.

Lots to learn from the close call.

This is going to be my burner handle if I lose a bet to stay away from the board but still crave the attention I get from making shallow, fairly obvious comments.

I suspect that task will be much more difficult than you think. Your usual Pulitzer level artistry will shine through every comment you make.

Instead of relying on the McLeod experiment wouldn’t it be more practical to actually teach help defense?

We spent the last 30 years hearing the coach say we can’t play man… to finally switching to man with a coach who doesn’t know how to teach it.

Ugh. It's one freaking game.
Give them a month and then get back to us.
