Lester's offense

Ummm yes? That would be 467 per game. Considering how we trended to end last year, that would seem like a minor miracle. And you'd have to assume it would be accompanied by improved red zone performance.

To be honest, even though it's considered average (at best) in modern college football, I'd be pleasantly surprised if we averaged 400 yds, 25 pts per game.
great, now i feel compelled to cut and paste a bunch of years from cfbdata looking for that kind of improvement,

i did this really fast so it could be wrong

a 90.2 yard improvement has happened 65 out of 728 times starting in 2009. 9% of the time

I would've guessed it's much more unlikely that that. Still rare but not insane.

2012 was a 128 yard improvement for us

disclaimer - this might be probably most likely definitely completely wrong

With the recent struggles of the offense, and you need to score 30 points to win, makes you think an O-minded coach is generally better than a D-minded coach for programs who can't hire superstar coordinators

this elmhurst stuff is just embarrassing

i'm fine with getting good lower level coaches. but since there are a frickin billion of them to choose from who would all ritualistically devour their own left nut for a sniff at a p5 coordinator job, we should probably pick coaches that perform at an elite level compared to those billion other choices
This is my thing, I think it's pretty well established who is for and against this move on the board... For all legitimate reasons. But, the way I see it, the decision's been made and none of us can change that... What's the point of continually picking it apart for whatever reason... It is what it is, might as well enjoy the ride, otherwise you're torturing yourself.

i'm not too worried about it. this year is one big shrug. i think i know how it ends. it'll either work or we'll try something new in a year. if i thought that shafer was going to be here forever, i'd be more concerned

this dance will be over in a year.
You haven't paid much attention to Our Chancellor, and his priorities lately have you? Scott isn't going anywhere in the immediate future, unless we have 2 bad seasons starting with this coming year.

ok

We need to embrace this. Wasnt so excited when I initially watched some Emhurst film. The more and more I watched I saw some good things. I visualized SU players in that offense. I now have a higher level of optimism. We all had our doubts about the coaching moves. We cant do anything now but embrace it and hope that the players buy into the scheme, run it well and win some games. If you are not on board then you are basically saying I hope we lose next year so Shafer gets canned. No fan should want that. I think most of us agree that Shafer is out if he doesnt show progress but that doesnt mean we have to be negative especially when this staff is working hard to turn it around and give us a good product on the field.

I haven't watched any of the old film, so I am eager to hear what you more informed guys have to say once the season starts. Hopefully there are some "Whoa we have not seen that before" moments.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've been under the impression that Lester was running the offense at the end of the 2013 season, including the win over Minnesota. That was a competent offense which is why I was so excited for last year to begin.

That is the rumor, I've never seen it varified though.

I think all you should take away from that, if anything, is Lester's ability to manage a gameplan and playcall. I wouldn't expect a lot of similarities between that offense and the 2015-2016 version.

lester made it a point to distance himself from mcdonald's offense.

Can you either find some enthusiasm for the battle or find another foxhole? It's becoming a real drag.

I watched some games from the 2013 season along with the Texas Bowl. Then I watched the Villanova game. I cant believe all of the changes McDonald made to the offense. It was completely different. I like McDonald as a person and recruiter but he really struggle as a coor. Dont know what he saw in the off season that convince him he could take out the productive elements of the 2013 offense.

Jerome Smith

Still don't understand why you'd tell a back as productive as Jerome to move on... I know his theory behind what he wanted in the backfield, but, we told over 2,100 rushing yards and 15 td's to have a nice day.
Not much of a receiver? Only thing I can think of.

Also, I always assumed Smith left because he saw an offense that held him back.

Slight hijack here, but I could swear I read that there were some "issues" between McDonald and the other coaches not seeing eye-to-eye. Anyone verify or elaborate?

Must've seen Ameen-Moore and Smith as similar in terms of what their contributions would be and figured he didn't need to carry two of the same type of back. I always liked Jerome though.

I can verify, no need to elaborate though. Differences of opinion.

That I can't tell you why we did. He was a big part of that offense but we were going in another direction. Ugh.

We've danced this dance before. Shafer won't hire guys he can't trust. So it's a combination of trust and ability.

His offense was in the top 20% and Shafer knows and trusts him.

The real question to me is whether or not Lester is his choice because he isn't given the budget for anyone else. If that's the case, then yes, go with someone you know and trust.

But if it were me, and I just had to admit that my first OC was a mistake, I'd be telling the school that I need at least $750k per year (or insert required price point) for a top shelf, experienced OC. No matter who I liked and trusted, there's no way I'd go with another guy lacking significant P5 experience (even as a position coach) unless the budget given made it my only choice.

It's an insane risk and I feel like it's setup to fail. I really do hope I'm wrong though.

And yes, I know I'm a broken record on this topic.
