Linebacker

Agree. I can see Grant at star. Once he gets the MCL fixed, he has a high ceiling - even hurt he improved his angles and tackling. But at 200 lbs, LB in a 4-2 is a stretch (both guys need coverage skills and enough size to stop the run). Barron is lighter than Wax and Grant is 25 lbs lighter than Barron. To my untrained eye, the only guy on roster with decent weight (225+) and speed is ZMG. He's been in the program and might be the one to step up. The rest are a year away (J. Brown, Diggs and C. Brown), too slow (McDonald, edit, Sparrow?), built more for the edge than coverage (Lesaine, David O) or lack experience (AD, Thompson and Dudley).
I do agree with this as i wanna see how ZMG does in this D. i would say then maybe 1 absolute stud Lb would help us. We can run ZMG and Sparrow in with whomever is new and sprinkle in the frosh once he really knows the defense which if e is here early should be sooner and if he is not it will be bye 6-7 game. Watson had very few allignments that changed as opposed to backer where u need to know drop zones, coverages, motion in backfield, and changes to los such as over and tight trips. Way more difficult.

Elijah Herring actually had less tackles this year than he had at Tennessee the year prior but had several more impact plays this season in Memphis. Note that he actually led Tennessee in tackles in 2023 with 79 tackles.

Also Pro Football Focus gave him a 69.0 grade for 2024 which is pretty strong over the course of a season with a very impressive 87.3 run defense grade.

Maybe it's a season too early but I'm a fan of Caden Brown. Long and rangy athlete on the edge. Played more as the season progressed. He's someone I think to keep an eye on.

His progress probably hinges a lot on how much bulk he can put on during winter workouts and the summer.

I am really interested in seeing progress in S&C come July. Guys like Caden, King, Fatim all 2 years in. We have college ready size also coming in. Hopefully we see LBs, DBs bigger and faster here.

Tank is back and he will be solid next year. Plus Chris Thomas from Marshall will give you a solid 2 deep.
That's what we need. Just need 4 good edge players to go with them. If the front 4 can control the LOS, the back 7 should be able to make plays.
