With the bills hiring Rex Ryan and the possibility of Saint Doug being on the bench next season, it looks as if Nate Hackett will be looking for a job.

Understood why Doug opted out - $4M parachute and seemingly strong prospects due to a contract clause and ownership change is a pretty strong incentive. Honestly expected at least the talk of a renegotiation with the Bills, but can't deny the logic of the business decision. However the impact on his assistant coaching staff certainly complicates things. Most of these coaches left a fairly stable situation to follow Marrone, were instrumental to his success and now are left to twist in the wind and scrounge for jobs? I would hope Doug is on the phone 24 / 7 hoping to find soft landings unless he has his own in his hip pocket and has already talked to them.

Contrast this with Coach Mac basically giving up his NFL career because he refused to dismiss several assistants with the Pats when he was under fire.

I brought the same thing up on another post. But from the responses I got I think DM could give a rats a$$ about his assistants. He's all about himself and the guys that followed him knew what they were getting into. Sux to be them right now

Why would anyone put his assistants interests above his own and his family? Ridiculous the amount of whining attributed with anything DM does.

I'm pretty sure it was explained that Marrone sought an extension for himself *and* his assistants. Which is nice and proves how selfless he is.

When the Bills refused he exercised his option to pocket $4 million and walked away, even though his assistants don't have that option and most likely will be replaced by the new head coach. Which is just the breaks.

It's amazing, the man really can't lose!

No one should. Unless when it's used as rationale for what a prince the guy is, of course.

Should not. And while I contrast with Mac, Doug is still relatively early in his career and Mac was certainly at the tail end. Don't get me wrong - I'm not being critical of Doug's decision at all. There is absolutely no question I would do exactly the same thing. I'm just pointing out the impact on others and the lack of security in the profession even in relatively successful scenarios.

And I had not read about efforts to negotiate an extension. If this was the case, then Bills fans should look inward. Results on the field certainly warranted at least a good faith effort. Apparently new ownership thought differently.

Not whining. I could care what he does. All I said in a previous post was that I felt bad for his assistants, who are now without work. I'm summarizing the responses I got

Q...he was making well over a million dollars a year for well over 5 years. He is set for life...his assistants are not.

He screwed over Cuse, screwed over the Bills and screwed over a bunch of assistants.

I do wonder whether a sub-.500 HC, with one of the worst offenses in the NFL (hired with a reputation of being offensive-minded), 2 years into a 4-yr deal, requested an extension for his entire staff, in an effort to save face, knowing that he had an opt out clause in his own contract.

He didn't screw over Cuse. He wanted an extension for he and his staff and didn't get any promise. They were all aware during the 2012 season that jobs were not safe and that everyone should be looking, and many of them were.

Everyone that went with him to Buffalo knew what they were getting into, and what they were leaving behind. Daoust and Brotzki stayed behind and some others had the same option. Most of them left because it was a better opportunity.

If he screwed them over so badly, where are they complaining about him?

He surely did screw over Cuse...he hadn't earned an extension until 2012 IMHO and he bolted at the worst possible time.

Dougie is about Dougie.

Assistants somewhat lead a nomadic lifestyle...they mostly will all do ok but surely they all would've preferred to stay in Buffalo and grow the team into a contender.

You won't hear public complaining because it would be career suicide to complain to the media.

Wonder if his agent helped his assistants get some type of "parachute" payout in their contracts. Makes me wonder if his assistants knew of that clause in Coach Marrone's contract and their added vulnerability when they signed on? Hopefully they did.

Was Marrone supposed to wait until after NSD to leave SU? There is never a good time for a coach to move on, but I don't know how he screwed SU after years of SU not delivering on what they had promised to him when he was hired.

It's funny that we read on here how we need to pay our assistants more to be competitive, yet when it comes to Marrone, we blame him for guys leaving and not the salary structure, or the fact that Shafer might not have wanted many of them to stay when he became HC.

You don't bail on your dream school and alma mater...sure the IPF wasn't delivered to him but it isn't like we didn't have any indoor facilities. I never heard anything about Shafer not wanting to work with assistants who went to the Bills.

Guys who have made enough to not have to worry about money for the rest of their lives are not IMO entitled to use the "I had to do what is best for my family" and by implication "regardless of what happens to the guys who helped me get to where I am today" excuse.

Doug acted with short term greed. He might have been better off to have been long-term greedy.

What did they promise him when he was hired?

You know what it was, and what he had issue with during his SU tenure. It wasn't just about 80 yards in Manley as an IPF, but it was a lot in terms of institutional support...but obviously I feel differently from others here.

I just don't like the one-sided view of "Marrone screwed SU" when in reality SU made the choices it made, and had to live with the outcomes just as much as Marrone.

And he was suppose to be part of that fund raising process and knew that. Eventually decided he didn't like it and went so far as to piss off some donors in NYC. So he was culpable himself.

Many of you on this board are comical. Doug didn't owe SU anything. He had't gotten an extension and had an opportunity to take a promotion to a job he'd personally enjoy more and make more money. How many of you would pass on that with your current employers? None of you. Cut him some slack and let's lose the sour grapes. He did what was right for him. We'd all do the same.

Now back to the task at hand. What do we need from the current staff and how do we turn around from this year's train wreck of a season...
