lost in this whole mess was the fact

Did he say academics? Where did I read that anyways?

I am trying to find the article, he did say academics. It was after Shafer was dismissed and he gave an interview, wasn't syracuse.com I don't think.

Don't worry about it. There were so many articles.

I am finding tweets from Sam Blum, they don't say specifically academics but it was alluded to in the article.

"I want to thank Scott, his wife Missy, and their family for their seven years of dedication and service to SU Athletics and Syracuse University. Scott has worked tirelessly to educate our students on and off the field and to build our program. However, I feel a change in leadership is needed at this time. A national search will begin immediately," Coyle said.

Other than the implied 'it's time to try something different', Where did Coyle say there was a leadership problem?

Exactly. "I feel a change in leadership is needed at this time" does not necessarily mean that there was a "leadership problem." Unless the OP has inside information (not saying he does not, btw), this seems more like an over generalization or incorrect assumption. The overused phrase "change in leadership is needed" is typically a more politically correct "I need to fire the HC for a lack of perfromance."

Well we did have a bunch of unsportsmanlike penalties against State with two players being ejected and Shafer himself got one each in the last two games. i wouldn't exactly call that a team playing cool and under pressure.

Coyle made a point in saying why he didn't fire the Boise St. basketball coach even though the fans wanted wins yesterday. He said the players competed and player hard for their coach. Those are not my words.

"I remember watching our kids compete, and that team played so hard for that coach," Coyle said in September. "That's not easy to do when you are .500 and it's late in the season. Those kids were still battling for that coach. We didn't have the wins, which the public wants yesterday, but they were competing. They were battling and they fought for everything. That was a great foundation."

There was no sign of that foundation at Syracuse.

I believe there was. By the truckload.

Sounds like there will soon be an OTL piece on the renegade SU football program being out of control. I find that hard to swallow.

Just 2 games ago we took the #1 team to the wire. You don't do that by not competing or battling.

that's BS. the kids played out of their minds against Clemson. A lot of kids gave great effort against NC State. I can understand a couple of the player unsportsman like conducts. It happens, especially when frustrated and playing a physical game. I got a couple while playing lacrosse. It had nothing to do with my coach. Ishmael has been a hot head since day 1.

And frankly, 99.9 % of this board excused the Shafer penalty against Clemson.

The NC State one he should have bit his tongue, but that call against Ishmael in the endzone was about as BAD as it gets. That was a horshite call by the official.

these kids would've mailed it in a lot sooner if not for the coach.

NC State was kicking our butt all game long and their coaches and players kept taunting our guys till and after the game was over. They are easily as low class as Rutgers and yet SU fans defend them. ACC refs have screwed SU repeatedly all season. The new dream/unicorn coach will find out about that too. Maybe the piss poor SU supporters will defend the new coach unlike how they have treated HCSS.

That is way over the top.

Where did Coyle say "lack of leadership".

And I think I watched this team go down 14-0 to Clemson and play them tough to the final gun. They lost to UVA in OT and Pitt on a final possession. Kids played hard all year.

And that bit about the basketball team was from an interview earlier this year, not yesterday.

As unreasonable as Retro is this stuff is nonsense.

I would have had no problem with Shafer coming back, but Coyle is doing this as much because he thinks he can get a better guy now.

As unfair as it is, this team has some good talent in the underclasses, which makes this job more attractive now.

If SU football was .500 late in this season Shafer would have been retained.

The guy is already fired and yet a lot of people want to continue to bring his character and reputation into question to make their conscience feel better. It does not change the fact that this will the FIFTH head coach in 12 years .

My thought is that Coach SS really only had 2 seasons with his coaches recruits.

The flip side is that 2/3 (65 of 98) of the roster is redshirt sophomore or below. The next coach will have two to three good years of veteran depth to work with as long as we don't have a lot of turnover.

**NEWSFLASH - Kids Smoke Weed in College**

Plenty of College Athletes on scholarship smoke weed too. Now more than ever it's part of youth and American culture. 2 kids getting popped multiple times for smoking is just dumb kid stuff not an indication a coach has lost control of a program.

Blame the Smurf ex-Chancellor.

That deal keeps paying dividends.

My guess is that P and D put a hex on the program on the way out.

Hey, that's a vicious Italian stereotype! ;)

This board isn't in a vacuum , it is a public space just like .com ,TV ,radio call in shows etcetera. And really it is just hurting the coaching search as other coaches will look at HCSS and understand his struggles and say to themselves, that is a tough nut to crack.

No it's not.

They all understand that 3-9 back to back, 13 and 24 in three years, doesn't it cut it.
