I second Watkins Glen - took the family there this summer. It is absolutely beautiful. Why take a shuttle? We walked up and down. It's not strenuous and you can make the round trip in an hour.Hit the wineries on Seneca Lake.
Park at the base of Watkins Glen park, take a bus/shuttle to the top and walk down.
Thanks for all the info and advice so far. I really appreciate it!
whaaaaaaat?Yeah I was shocked at how much color there was when I was up there the weekend before labor day weekend.
In addition to the wineries in the Finger Lakes area, the natural scenery is fantastic. Hiking through Watkins Glen is great, and the waterfalls and gorges around Ithaca are spectacular, Taughannock Falls in particular.
If you're into hiking at all and don't mind a bit of a drive, give this peak a look:

It's a short hike, not too steep (but with a good vertical ascent), and the view from the top will stay with you forever.
Aaahh. My two favorite summer destinationsAlexandria Bay and Sackets Harbour are full of historic charm and an easy jaunt up I81.
If you like to get liquored up you could wage an assault on the French Fort (or whatever name it goes by today). Memories.
Thanks for all the info and advice so far. I really appreciate it!
Hello all. I come in peace! It's over a year away but I'm already getting excited about making the trip up to Syracuse next football season. I'm basically just looking for any tips you guys can provide to make our trip more enjoyable. There's a good chance we are going to make a week long trip either on the front end or back end of the game weekend. So I'm just looking for advice on things like:
Hotels to stay
Restaurants to eat at
Things to do during the week leading up to or after the game. Either in Syracuse or within a couple of hours.
Do I need to rent a car? How's public transportation in the area?
Basically any advice you can give.
Thanks and good luck to you guys this season!
I'm going to echo Niagara Falls and Cooperstown. However they are on opposite sides of Syracuse. Probably 4 hours apart. If you've never seen the falls it's well worth the trip, however there is not a lot to do besides that. Toronto is a great city but that's another 1.5 hours out of your way. Cooperstown is a great little town. If you like baseball it's a no brainer, however the town is real cute and if you bring your wife there are a lot of bed and breakfasts to stay at. Let us know how many days you are coming for and that will help dictate an agenda. Like others have said, upstate NY in the fall is a beautiful place with lots to do.Let me know how much time you have...I'll tell you your options. Are you flying out of NOLA?
I think the two most unique attractions we have within 2.5 hours are Niagara Falls and Cooperstown. The Finger Lakes (wineries), Salmon Fishing or Leaf Peeping are also excellent. Don't forget to try some of our local food specialties. BTW, bring your Passport and visit Canada too.
I've only walked down (a handful of times). I see people struggling who are going in the opposite direction. Why take a shuttle? We walked up and down. It's not strenuous and you can make the round trip in an hour.
