LSU fan here...Never too early to start planning!

Maybe because it was kind of a cool summer around here? Interesting.

Cooler and the rain I'd guess

Pack a good mix of clothes and gear, the weather can be all over the place here in September, and it will be comparatively frigid in October. Yes, on the car, public transportation exists... but you'll be pretty limited in terms of where you can go if you rely on it alone. There is quite a bit to see and do just depends on what your thing is... outside of football of course...

yeah if you're outdoorsy...1000 islands/ adirondacks/ finger lakes are all beautiful areas and worth a day trip.

Just read TexanMark's guide. Pretty much everything is in there, then just ask questions later! Looking forward to the matchups with LSU!

In addition to the wineries in the Finger Lakes area, the natural scenery is fantastic. Hiking through Watkins Glen is great, and the waterfalls and gorges around Ithaca are spectacular, Taughannock Falls in particular.

If you're into hiking at all and don't mind a bit of a drive, give this peak a look:

It's a short hike, not too steep (but with a good vertical ascent), and the view from the top will stay with you forever.

Hit the wineries on Seneca Lake.
Park at the base of Watkins Glen park, take a bus/shuttle to the top and walk down.

If fishing is your thing, consider a charter on Lake Ontario.

I second Watkins Glen - took the family there this summer. It is absolutely beautiful. Why take a shuttle? We walked up and down. It's not strenuous and you can make the round trip in an hour.

Thanks for all the info and advice so far. I really appreciate it!

Let me know how much time you have...I'll tell you your options. Are you flying out of NOLA?

I think the two most unique attractions we have within 2.5 hours are Niagara Falls and Cooperstown. The Finger Lakes (wineries), Salmon Fishing or Leaf Peeping are also excellent. Don't forget to try some of our local food specialties. BTW, bring your Passport and visit Canada too.

there is also a museum on Bovine Scatology outside of Ithaca

That is where I met stan/saint triston for the 1st. time

Wow! I didn't realize how much our area of the country had to offer. :)

Dinosaur BBQ.

Seriously has not been mentioned yet? Come on people...

If you want a real adventure head up to Toronto and see our highly over rated CN tower! And then go party with Rob Ford if thats your thing...

I think you need to do Dinosaur BBQ in Syracuse, simply because it's one of those things that everyone mentions.

If you're into history, the Erie Canal was pretty amazing in its day. There's a museum in Syracuse.

Niagara Falls is also just one of those things. If you think you're unlikely to make it to upstate NY again, it's definitely worth going.

If you planned an Upstate/NYC combo trip, the train along the river in the Hudson Valley is beautiful. I never get tired of it. Takes a long time to Syracuse, though.

If you like to get liquored up you could wage an assault on the French Fort (or whatever name it goes by today). Memories.

I remember going to that place on field trips as a kid and trying to say things to get the actors/recreationists to laugh, break character, etc.

Definitely go to the Adirondacks. Saratoga Springs/Lake George area is cool.

If you like horse racing, go to Saratoga if it's not too late in the season.

Hello all. I come in peace! It's over a year away but I'm already getting excited about making the trip up to Syracuse next football season. I'm basically just looking for any tips you guys can provide to make our trip more enjoyable. There's a good chance we are going to make a week long trip either on the front end or back end of the game weekend. So I'm just looking for advice on things like:

Hotels to stay
Restaurants to eat at
Things to do during the week leading up to or after the game. Either in Syracuse or within a couple of hours.
Do I need to rent a car? How's public transportation in the area?

Basically any advice you can give.

Thanks and good luck to you guys this season!

Looking forward to seeing all of you Bayou Bengal fans in the Dome!

I think you will find that it is a great college football venue.

I'm going to echo Niagara Falls and Cooperstown. However they are on opposite sides of Syracuse. Probably 4 hours apart. If you've never seen the falls it's well worth the trip, however there is not a lot to do besides that. Toronto is a great city but that's another 1.5 hours out of your way. Cooperstown is a great little town. If you like baseball it's a no brainer, however the town is real cute and if you bring your wife there are a lot of bed and breakfasts to stay at. Let us know how many days you are coming for and that will help dictate an agenda. Like others have said, upstate NY in the fall is a beautiful place with lots to do.

I've only walked down (a handful of times). I see people struggling who are going in the opposite direction.

Age, health & kids are also something to consider. The trail/path along the gorge has areas which are wet. If you have any mobility issues this might not be a good venue to visit.

100% hit the bar scene. Craft beer is our specialty! Empire, World of Beer in Destiny, Blue Tusk, Bull & Bear -- nothing like a nice place to enjoy a nice beer
