Did anyone read Bret Axe's post in the paper today or see his podcast? I don't understand his stance that the SU coaching staff botched and mishandled Carney? Someone please help me understand this. Carney still has his redshirt as long as he doesn't play next week. So much was made of giving him a chance to start and play a complete game against BC. I keep asking the question..in the limited action he received, did he even look like he was close to being the answer. I don't understand, when Coach Fran, when asked why he kept playing Ricky Collins and his answer was Ricky gives us the best chance to win. Why did fans not believe that we did not have a better option at QB? We called for Carney, we called for anybody but Ricky. The sad truth, that played out in front of all of our eyes, was that none of the QB's that we put in after Ricky were even close to being ready to lead a Power 4 team. I know, hard to imagine...but that is the ugly truth and the coaching staff knew that. The only kid we didn't see was Jakari Williams, a Babers recruit that had been here 3 years...and they didn't think he was good enough to win games and actually lost out to Collins in Spring Ball!! The staff went out and got Ricky collins because they knew the QB cupboard was bare..and when Ricky didn't work out...we were toast!

All I am going to ask this for all the Carney fans, in his limited action, did he even look like he was close to being the answer? At best, he looked like a true freshman developmental project. We found ourselves in a situation that behind Angeli, all we had was developmental projects and that is a recipe and a good predictor of what we actually saw!

I'm not a Carney fan and don't think he's a magic answer.

Rather, trusting QB6, a true freshman walk-on LAX player to start while, basically skipping over your scholarship QB3, 4, and 5 was always a very bizarre thing to do. That implies to me that there are three stories there. Last night we found out the answer to the QB4 story was a sling. I'm curious about QB3 and 5. That is all.

I think the plan going into yesterday's game was for Filardi to play vs. ND and Carney to play vs. B.C. But when Filardi was being shellacked in the 1st qtr they decided they needed to give him a break and I suppose let him collect himself so he could go back in. They weren't going to put in Rickie so they threw Carney in there, thus burning his 4th game. Thus they can't play him vs. B.C. without burning his redshirt which they've said they're not going to do. So, that leaves the question -- who will go in next week if Filardi needs a break or, God forbid, is injured? Rickie? Who else is there? Villari maybe?

How could anyone possibly tell? How many snaps did he get this season? 30? I don't think he played more than 2 drives in any game.

Probably because Fran spent the summer talking about how unbelievably close the QB competition was. And come to find out, that was a lie. Obviously Angeli was miles better than Collins. So why believe anything Fran says about the QB room? He's shown that he lies about it.

This is not to say I think Carney's any good. He probably isn't. But it's not difficult to understand why people wanted to see that with their own eyes. And see it for an actual half, or even a whole game.

I mention it because this situation makes no sense. Why come to a P4 school early, play through the spring and summer, then demand that you get redshirted, and transfer out at the end of the season? That's almost assuredly what's going to happen and it's very, very weird.

I believe Carney isn't a P4-level QB and that's why he didn't get to play here. But if I was a freshman player, or his parents, I'd jump at the chance to play more than 4 games of P4 football if the opportunity presented itself.

I don't think Luke wants to be here, I fully expect his name to be the first one in the portal. Maybe the second depending if Collins beats hit or not. Luke shows no emotion or energy at all. He looked like he was simply going through the motions or trying to distance himself from the game.

I'll preface this with this is 100% pure speculation and it's based on hearsay but mysteries like this very much intrigue me so I'm going to give it a shot.

Things we've seen:
1. Carney is on a wildly short leash
2. His first appearance was at Colgate when Rickie's helmet came off (not when Rickie got pulled for throwing an FCS Int, the starter actually came back in), and on that one play he immediately scored a TD and then disappeared.
3. The team confirmed the redshirt.
4. He's been kept out of obvious throwing situations and his redshirt was burned in just about the most useless way possible.
5. Luke said he would've re-evaluated the redshirt if he got the UNC start, but literally the walk-on got it over him.

The limited rumors we've heard:
6. Luke Carney's dad is somehow connected.
7. The team has suffered parent involvement issues that started around Game 3.

Game 3 was, notably, Colgate. If I'm Carney Sr and watched Rickie's rather emetic performance against Colgate, along with the staff's apparent disregard for Carney as an option, I'd be pissed. At the same time, if I'm Nixon, and if a dad started messing with my work? At that point I'd do well to keep the situation at arm's length.

Again, I'm jumping to conclusions here, but it's too curious a situation for me to not think about it.

I have not seen number 5 on that list yet. Where can I find that?

In all seriousness, the way he's been handled this year (since January) is utterly bizarre. I suppose it's possible some B12 team likes his HS tape and offers him a spot with very little NIL money attached.

I could be wrong but I don’t see it.

I don’t know if Carney is the answer but how the staff used him is ridiculous.
People keep saying he is not the answer and maybe that’s true but how would anyone know. He only got a couple of series and never allowed to even try to get into a flow.
Second I know offers mean very little but he did have multiple P4 offers. What’s made no sense is that a walkon lacrosse player is better than all our scholarship qbs. If that is the case who ever evaluated the qbs needs to be fired. I know Filiardi had good numbers in high school but he did not have any P4 offers and was not offered one by the staff.
If Carney’s dad’s a problem as some suggest why play the kid at all. We had several qbs never see the field this year.
The whole situation makes absolutely no sense and is why fans are scratching their heads and are frustrated.

I'll add that in the modern game we're asked to donate money knowing it has been/will be used to pay players. The coaching staff whiffed and is acting rather strange about it.

As a fan I get the whole "trust the coaches" thing, I really do. Some things are better not shared. But as a donor I feel like I'm being kept in the dark about a very bizarre situation and I want to understand.

I’ve never seen multiple rotations of qbs on 1 drive unless it was for something very specific like Tim Tebow. Rotating qbs mid drive for the same playbook is so weird

I recall seeing it in a post. Maybe earlier in this thread. Or maybe it was in a P-S article. But I do remember seeing that. I'd guess the coaching staff thought Filardi was ahead of Carney for the UNC game.

For sure. If he was able to ride the pine for 3 years, then was summoned to play as a senior for a few games due to some calamity, you can squint and see how me might be able to hold down the fort.

But as a true frosh? In game 8?! When QBs 3 and 4 didn't see the field before him? Mind blowing.

The true freshman has played 21 snaps for Syracuse. In those three games, he has just three pass attempts.

Both Brown and Carney said that redshirting was the plan for Carney since the offseason. But Carney said Tuesday he was fine with sacrificing his redshirt had he earned the right to replace Collins under center.

This is the part of modern NIL that I'm not sure some coaches are going to deal with well. Most are used to spouting BS non answers to things because they didn't REALLY answer to the fans, in the sense that fans didn't directly impact their ability to do their job. Now, if the fans are being asked to donate directly to compensation of players, then coaches are probably going to have to move away from some of the cagey non-answers or outright lies regarding player development and capabilities. If I'm a person or business shelling out 5, 6, maybe 7 figures for player compensation, I'm only going to get so many BS stories before I close the checkbook. Belief without evidence is really hard to foster when you're directly allocating other people's money.

QB1: Angeli (hurt)
QB2: Collins (ineffective)

Williams had his arm in a sling yesterday. Scuttlebutt says he was injured during training camp. Let's not even list him.

That leaves three true freshmen:
Carney
Filardi
Belin

Since Filardi will be playing LAX in a few months, blowing his redshirt doesn't mean anything. No point in blowing both Carney & Belin's redshirts (although Belin could have seen some action in a few games. Unless he's just not up to speed yet).

I think the staff was hoping that Collins would figure it out. Had they known it was a lost cause, they might have just tossed Carney out there for the rest of the season.

Blowing his redshirt doesn't mean anything unless Gait planned on redshirting him this year. I'm not even sure if that's really a thing in lacrosse, and I'm not sure how good Angeli is at LAX. I don't follow it closely.
