Luke Carney

QB1: Angeli (hurt)
QB2: Collins (ineffective)

Williams had his arm in a sling yesterday. Scuttlebutt says he was injured during training camp. Let's not even list him.

That leaves three true freshmen:
Carney
Filardi
Belin

Since Filardi will be playing LAX in a few months, blowing his redshirt doesn't mean anything. No point in blowing both Carney & Belin's redshirts (although Belin could have seen some action in a few games. Unless he's just not up to speed yet).

I think the staff was hoping that Collins would figure it out. Had they known it was a lost cause, they might have just tossed Carney out there for the rest of the season.

20/20 Hindsight.
I don’t see any evidence that they would have played Carney. They easily could have. They could have decided he was the guy to ride out the mistakes with in the name of development. They did the exact opposite of that. It’s abundantly clear they didn’t see any value in developing him.

I’ll stand by my take. Starting Filardi when they did was mind blowing.

FWIW, OrangeXtreme , I believe that Collins looked good in practice (I mean, he was practicing against the SU D, why wouldn’t he look good) but then he stunk in his first game. And the next week he looked good in practice and stunk in the game. And again.

I have a hunch that Nixon kept telling Fran that the breakthrough would come. And when it didn’t, Nixon wanted to try another option/get Fran off his back. Hence Filardi. Because Nixon is clearly not a believer in Carney at all.

And when the true frosh walk on inevitably failed Nixon quickly went back to Collins. Who stunk again.

Honestly they should have just kept rolling with Rickie. They were going to lose anyway.

Stop with the Carney hype. PLEASE. If Carney was better than Filardi, he'd be playing over him. He's not. PERIOD.

If you scratch Collins and Williams off the list, which true freshman are you running with for the rest of the season?

It's Game 6. Make the call based on what you knew back in September, NOT what you know now.

Blowing his redshirt doesn't mean anything unless Gait planned on redshirting him this year. I'm not even sure if that's really a thing in lacrosse, and I'm not sure how good Angeli is at LAX. I don't follow it closely.
I can see the redshirt thing being of some importance to the player, but with the no restrictions environment re player transfer it shouldn’t be of any importance at all to the football program.

Only thing that makes sense is the staff is TRYING to get Jakhari/Carney/Belin to transfer out because they've seen enough to know they aren't good enough.

You could probably find a kid in Shaw Hall tomorrow that could play QB as well as Filardi

He's in the two man rotation at LSM.

Gait wasn't redshirting him.

I can promise you that Carney is a better QB than Filardi. Even in the limit game action with limit throws you can already see that. What is the reason he isn’t playing then? My guess is Carney or the Carneys already had the conversation with Fran and told him they are leaving. If you go back to Frans interviews he said basically either you are with us or you are out my guess is Carney is out.

I have to think that because the way he is being used that is the only thing that makes sense

He didn’t look in practice. He was never good that’s why they brought Angeli in

I mention it because this situation makes no sense. Why come to a P4 school early, play through the spring and summer, then demand that you get redshirted, and transfer out at the end of the season? That's almost assuredly what's going to happen and it's very, very weird.

I believe Carney isn't a P4-level QB and that's why he didn't get to play here. But if I was a freshman player, or his parents, I'd jump at the chance to play more than 4 games of P4 football if the opportunity presented itself.

*edit* Let me be clear, I'm not blaming Fran nor am I blaming the Carneys. I have no clue what's the story here. And no one has told it. It's just weird as hell all around.
I think if a legitimate opportunity was there he may have reconsidered the redshirt. But yeah, overall it’s a bit baffling.

Other than Fran's word, if he gave his word to the player and his family that he would redshirt this year.

redshirting is a thing in lacrosse (but you can't have played at all). I assume you meant "Filardi" not "Angeli" as to how good a lacrosse player he is. Joe Filardi is a very good lacrosse player. As OrangeXtreme mentioned he is an LSM -- Long-stick midfielder. That is, a midfielder who is one of the four defenders that plays with a long pole. It is a critical position on a successful lacrosse team. I believe he was rated as a 4 or 5 star lacrossse player coming out of high school. He committed to SU first as a lacrosse player and then had discussions with Fran and the football coaching staff and with Gary Gait's blessing decided to be a walkon on the football team. I believe he wasn't recruited more highly by P4 schools for football was because everyone believed he was going to play lacrosse, not football. Joe has played his heart out on behalf of this football team. He should not be disparaged for being the QB the coaches chose to play.

ADDENDUM - for all of you SU football fans who do not follow the SU Men's Lacrosse team -- it is time to. It is the one team that will likely have a very good year. Many of us believe it has a real good shot at winning this year's NCAA National Championship. And for those of you who don't know, Syracuse University has won more men's lacrosse NCAA Championships than any other school -- 11 in reality (10 in the eyes of the NCAA). And, as mentioned on yesterday's TV broadcast on NBC, the player thought by many as the greatest lacrosse player of all time --- Jim Brown -- is also considered by many to be the best football player of all time. And he played at SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY!!! [He also played on the basketball team and the track team.]

Only thing is, this circus didn't start until game 9. So Filardi's and Belin's redshirts couldn't have been blown anyway unless we made a bowl game (pauses for laughter).

I'm just shocked that redshirting is still something the coaches consider in any way shape or form in 2025. They're going to try to recruit over everyone. Kids who don't play are going to find another place where they can play.

If he's starting in 2029, I'll stand corrected. But I wouldn't even put a 10 dollar futures bet on that.

Bowl games don't count. ;)

Did anyone read Bret Axe's post in the paper today or see his podcast? I don't understand his stance that the SU coaching staff botched and mishandled Carney? Someone please help me understand this. Carney still has his redshirt as long as he doesn't play next week. So much was made of giving him a chance to start and play a complete game against BC. I keep asking the question..in the limited action he received, did he even look like he was close to being the answer. I don't understand, when Coach Fran, when asked why he kept playing Ricky Collins and his answer was Ricky gives us the best chance to win. Why did fans not believe that we did not have a better option at QB? We called for Carney, we called for anybody but Ricky. The sad truth, that played out in front of all of our eyes, was that none of the QB's that we put in after Ricky were even close to being ready to lead a Power 4 team. I know, hard to imagine...but that is the ugly truth and the coaching staff knew that. The only kid we didn't see was Jakari Williams, a Babers recruit that had been here 3 years...and they didn't think he was good enough to win games and actually lost out to Collins in Spring Ball!! The staff went out and got Ricky collins because they knew the QB cupboard was bare..and when Ricky didn't work out...we were toast!
They got Ricky before Luke was on campus and they also paid him, there wasn’t going to be a real competition between him and Collins. Then Collins was bad so it went to Angeli thank goodness. I think the malpractice in his handling is the 1-2 series in the games he played without ever giving him a real shot. They wouldn’t even let him throw down field despite the fact that they threw out Collins over and over and then Filardi. It was a garbage showing on all fronts when it comes to coaching. I don’t believe for a second he could be any worse than Filardi.

Who cares, That kid isn’t good enough to win us any games.

We know this how? Because “trust me bro” by the staff?
A few weeks ago you said belin was a tearing it up and he hasn’t seen the field. Your qb assement track record is poor. If he’s was so great why hasn’t he sent he field.

Me? I have never said that lol you clearly are mixing me up with someone else

I mean, Rickie is better than Filardi and he isn't playing. Since UNC we've basically moved on to bowl-game-style development, and for whatever reason Luke isn't part of that. To be clear I don't think he's any sort of magic answer, but I would like to know why things unfolded as they did, if only to prevent it from happening again.

Other than Fran's word, if he gave his word to the player and his family that he would redshirt this year.

I wonder a little bit if the agreement was more specific, e.g., "play four games." It sure feels like the staff made a token effort to do exactly that and nothing more.

Maybe, but I doubt Fran would have committed to have him play in any games. If Steve had stayed healthy he would probably have played QB in 100% of the plays after the Colgate game. And if we were still getting blown out Rickie would have been put in.

Like I said in the game thread I hope Carney is here the whole five years and when he plays still doesn’t pass or play much. We need to keep this running gag going.

Every game this year was a why play him at all moment. Now assuming we want to end the season with a win, and just running with the QB is our best option… he won’t play. Brilliant.

Interesting.

Guess that explains why Jakhari didn't get a look.
