Luke Carney

This thread is silly
You all want Fran to come out and say "Rickie has talent but *** **** does he *** the bed when the lights come on"
NO as a coach you need to build up your players and not trash talk them to the media and fans

Oh no Fran did not give us th full picture of Rickie and tried to build him up for as long as he could, how DARE he try to install conviendence and work with a player

We WILL never ever know everything that goes on behind closed doors, is it fun to talk about what might happen or did happen hell yes but come on get grip with this. The QB room was bad like real real real bad and I'm sure the coaches figured it out when it was to late to deo anything about it but to say Fran lied and/or tricked us is being a little over the top

Could you image a press cofenerence "yeah Rickie is a dumpser fire with making reads, and OMG wait to you see how terrible our guards are oh boy what a mess they are. Oh wile I have you guys or Dline is just a bunch of dudes in jerseys and we will hope they can actually stop someone...Don't get me started on my defensive coaches!!!"

What are the chances, he doesn’t hit the portal?
Depends what he is told by Fran.
We only brought in one Freshman QB and if we only bring in one portal QB he is still in the mix for QB2 or QB3 for 2026.
He would have to drop down to G5 or lower to get a shot at starting.
To me the QBs we brought in from the 25 class where always going to need 2 years minium to get up to speed and be starter ready.

What do you think about Lott? Do you think he is college ready like Fran said?

No. He’s not.

Apparently he’s a great leader, and a fantastic athlete, but he’s not P4 QB ready - yet.

I think even Fran himself called him something like that -
A great athlete who can throw the ball.

You know who else that describes?
Calvin Russell.

The QB room stunk - Fran wasn't going to say that. I do wish we got some explanation on how and why Carney was used the way he was but hey...

Back to square one for Fran - we know he can win with a good to very good QB. Now he has to make sure he has one and maybe two.

If Carney was my kid I would've wanted him to redshirt to. Youre behind Angeli and Collins to begin with it's a no brainer. Late in the season yeah maybe he could've played the last 5/6 games, run around getting killed and then suffer QB ptsd for the rest of his career. No thanks. The family made the right decision and frankly if Fran agreed to it prior to the season he should be commended for not going back on whatever promises were made.

I hope Carney is back and let the chips fall where they may.

Fran should be looking for a legit QB coach.
The issue was that he was used stupidly. 1 play against Colgate. Never, ever waste a true freshman "game" on 1 play. Much less the last play of the game in a blowout win. Either give him a full drive to get a taste of the speed of the game or sit him for the game. Tell me why we don't just take a knee anyway. Put Villari in to take a knee. We runneth up the score against Colgate and ND runneth up the score against us.

And then you have the Pitt game... 2 drives and they take him out on 3rd and 9. 1 drive against UNC in a game where Cook could have completed as many passes as Filardi. 2 drives against ND?

The guy made no critical errors in whatever PT he had... no interceptions, no fumbles, no pick 6.

Collins should have started every game, with either Carney or Filardi getting meaningful PT if/when Collins faltered. It is absurd that we played Collins against Miami, but not against UNC or BC. Yes, he stunk... but he only started against teams that were in the running for the ACC CG: Duke, SMU, Pitt, Ga Tech, and Miami. Why not throw the kid a bone and let him play against UNC and BC??? And I guarantee that the result in Notre Dame would have been better with Collins.

If I am Carney and his team, I think I want elsewhere just because of the offensive mismanagement by whomever made those decisions. A guy/gal that is mean to the waiter/waitess and nice to you, will eventually not be nice to you either.

Unless Belin leaves, I assume Carney will be, the math says three QBs are leaving with Lott coming in and Fran saying they are bringing in two portal guys. Rickie and JW are gone I am sure so that leaves Belin and Carney, unless he wants 6 QBs on scholarship

I thought Belin was getting a position change?

Cool
What a seriously class kid, And who knows what could happen. From a measurable standpoint even with a great arm potentially difficult but certainly not impossible if developed. Who knows? From a program standpoint and certainly from what I have been told athletic standpoint this is someone who you would not want to lose from again a program standpoint and certainly big burst potential? Slot receiver? He is definitely a team guy though for sure. Serious class young Luke, Thank you!

The only talk I am hoping he is going to be given is please stay

I agree that I don't completely like how Carney saw the field. Wish he would have had more opportunities the throw the ball when he was in. But some of this thinking is revisionist thinking in hindsight.

The Colgate game is exactly the type of game where you play a freshman QB to get him some time with the plan to redshirt him. Would hope it would be for more than a play though. But Ricky had to come out on that play for some reason right? He could have put Angeli back in but saw an opening to put Carney in and did it. Nobody knew Angeli was going to get hurt and then our second string QB was going to look bad and need to be yanked.

And the way the season was going, absolutely zero fans thought Collins should have started every game the rest of the season after Angeli was injured, including you.

The fans would have been even more irate if we started Collins every game and kept losing. They would be screaming how can Fran not make a QB change and see if what we have is better or not?!?! Like it or not, Coaches do need to appease the fans to some degree in order to keep there job. Once fans are sold they disagree with who is coach, he is as good as gone. Plus you really don't know what will happen with any QB until he get into game action. You may have an idea but you don't know for sure.

And once you know Collins isn't it, I think he thought lets try to get some experience for QB's for the future. Obviously Fran didn't expect it to go as bad as it did for Filardi and I don't think everyone else htought it would go that bad either. You hope for growth but with the OL struggles etc it just wasn't happening.

Tough situation all around. Fran obviously needs to take some blame but I don't agree with the thought of Collins should have started every game after Angeli went down.

Why? I don't.
QB is a year-to-year role now. Did you see any indications this year that make you think he'll be able to step in if there is an injury next season and be successful?

I'd rather he just moved on and we brought in more competition.

If he stays, no worries. But nothing about him screams P4 QB to me.

#1 On October 31, 2025, I was assuming that Carney was QB#3 for most of the season for a reason and that any removal of Collins would result in QB#3 getting a start.

#2 Carney starting that game would have given COLLINS a break from the pressure and allow him to come in for relief. It seemed like the moment was too big for him and that he was pressing. Plus, I thought he was the QB#2 for the future to develop in a lost season.

#3 At THIS date, I now think that that the gap between Collins/Filardi is so great that I cannot fathom how any competent coach would think it smart to give Filardi so much PT at the expense of Carney, much less Collins. As bad as Collins was, he had 200 yard passing games against good teams. Filardi had <200 passing yards over three games. Not blaming Filardi.

Are you speaking for the program? Dr. Gross told me a similar thing in response to keeping GRob for a 4th year and he ended up being quite wrong... as he proved himself less than a year later when (finally) firing him. But if the program wants me to not be a fan anymore, then so be it.
