Luke Carney

The plan was Collins QB1 and Carney or Williams as QB2. They wouldn't have gotten a quality portal QB2 if Collins had panned out.

Angeli was a fix for Collins. But if Collins didn't need fixing, then we would have been playing either Carney or Williams this year.
Do you have inside info to know that for sure? How do you know the plan all along wasn't to bring in additional QB to the mix weather Collins looked good or not? The staff had a prior relationship with Angeli and likely knew it was a possibility that he could transfer out of ND if not given the starting job. Maybe they were waiting on that to unfold before bringing in the second QB option, as they thought that was the best QB they could likely bring in. So why not wait and see what happens.

What QB is portaling to SU to be QB2? And why would Fran with a limited NIL budget send it QB2's way instead of to a bigger area of need?

Correct. Angeli was brought in for a reason. He wasn't promised a job but he knew what it was going to take to win the job and nobody was expecting him not to win it, especially given we gave him real money.

Assuming the first half vs Pitt goes as expected, will be interesting to see if Carney plays. Two rough starts and then a third start with the bye week should be it for Collins.

I do acknowledge I have not liked some of the playcalling during his two starts though. The fourth down opener TOD should have been Villari keeping it.

If you're going to run up the middle just use him not Collins it made no sense.

Who said we were bringing them in to certainly be QB2? If Collins was rather questionable, you bring in a QB to compete for QB1 just as we did. If Collins looked really good then you bring in a guy to likely be QB2 but tell them they can compete for QB1. Maybe one with some experience that is likely behind a very good starter elsewhere or behind a QB who they think looks very promising. That QB could think he has a better shot at SU trying to win time behind a guy who has never played before and you tell them we don't have much immediate depth behind Collins.

Also I think they hoped they had more with Jakhari than it maybe turns out we had.

The strategy part really has nothing to do with Collins. This time last year we needed a QB1 and a QB2. Getting a portal kid would take care of one of those. Getting two portal kids was not realistic. So even if Angeli came here in December, our plan for QB2 would have been Carney.

The plan was made prior to Spring ball. Any adjustments after Spring is Plan B.

Rotate 3 QB’s. Insanity. The university is paying the head coach and staff a great deal of money. Have a little faith that Fran and his boys know the game, the players etc much better than we do. It’s way too early fou suicide watch. Very old man out.

Do you have any better ideas about how us fans can make the educated choice for best QB?

Because I'm all ears!

Hell of a thread. It’s possible this bad boy gets to 100 pages eventually.

There is no position in any sport that gets more hype than the backup QB.

And why was bringing in 2 portal QB's not realistic? We did it. You just said you need QB1 and QB2. We brought in Rickie and obviously didn't tell him he was automatically going to be the starter. Hence we brought in Angeli in the spring and he was fine with it as we never guaranteed anything and said you have to win your spot. Pretty sure he said we didn't promise it to him. And if we didn't promise it to him why would getting another QB not be doable? If one they really liked popped up in the winter maybe they pull the trigger on him as well and let them fight it out. But it seems they decided to wait until after the spring, to see how things shook out.

We don't have the money to bring in two quality QB's. Look at our other needs. And they are plentiful. We shot our shot with Angeli and once again, hit it out of the park. Yes, we did get Collins from the portal but I think the coaches were aware of his limitations once they got him on board.

Fans don’t make those calls, we sit in the stands and yell and boo and pay for a ticked. Coaches don’t pay to get in, they get paid to be there. If they don’t perform, they end up in the stands. I don’t have an answer either way Rickey or Like or Jakari or anyone else on the roster. My only point is why not let the people getting paid make the calls based on the knowledge they have. We fans only know what we see for a few hours on game day. Coaches have all week every week. Last week we saw a couple freshman get some time on D. Reason being they outplayed their older competition during the week. Personally, I have fait in Fran and his staff. Let’s see what happens.

So you are saying we didn't plan on bringing in two QB's and we were planning on rolling with Jakhari or Carney/Belin as QB2 if needed? But yet we did bring in a second QB anyway because Steve looked limited? And once we spent additional money on Angeli, it really hurt our ability to use money elsewhere?

So if that is the case our only solution is to develop better QB depth as we can't afford to bring in QB2 depth from outside. certainly sounds reasonable. So its not really a situation of the staff not evaluating what they have properly to have adequate QB talent, but not being able to afford bringing in multiple QB's from outside program developed talent. And if we can alternatively develop a #1 from within that would be the most preferred, obviously.

A lot of moving parts here. If McCord had gotten injured, Fran might have been coaching for his job in 2025 and 2026. Instead, we went 10-3 and Syracuse is trying to keep him from leaving. If Fran is truly here for the long-term, then I think you let him decide how to handle this issue. If he thinks playing Carney will waste his development, and not bring much upside anyway, why should he do so?

Most of us assume he is loyal because he did not bench Angeli against UConn... a move most of us now regret having wished for. Or, maybe Fran just knows that QB 1> QB 2 > QB 3 > QB 4. Which is why he has them ranked... there is an order. I am sure he is not TRYING to lose games. If he thinks Collins gives the team the best chance to win, then that is his call. If the team thinks Carney is the better QB, that it is his problem to deal with. If the team is just frustrated because Collins just cannot do the things Angeli and McCord did... everyone needs to get over it... include the O.C., who now has to REALLY earn this pay check.

There were some magic threads years back, I can't remember the poster but they did some truly elite posting in tjem, where they made a post about the backup QB being the most popular player on the team, and then something happened with our kicker, and in the thread about that they made the exact same post, word for word, about the backup locker being the most popular player on the team, and it was just an absolute masterclass in message board posting.

Don’t forget the backup PG.

In the matter of 30 days we’ve went from boos and calls to bench Angeli at UConn to Angeli should be on the Heisman list after blowing up Dabo in Death Valley to Collins is our guy to Collins should never touch a football again to Carney is our man.

We have also gone from "we will not lose again" to "we will not win again" pretty quickly.

Even Greg Robinson won a few games. Literally. In his very very small defense, he was not given an annual FCS game. That might have given him 2-3 extra wins.

So we sound like the average college football fanbase.
