And I can't stop myself from thinking that Collins has been at his best when the defenses call off the dogs. When they play for real he hasn't shown much.

This is the essence of being a practice player (i.e. doing well when the other team is laying off).

When the other guys are literally trying to hurt you, it's a different animal. Some guys take time adjusting to real, hostile defense; not just practice level defense.

Everyone is missing the big picture. Right now, Narduzzi is salivating about October 18th at 7:30 pm. He gave McCord fits last year and will really dial it up for this game with a struggling quarterback to go against. Personally I think Coach Brown is between a rock and a hard place. Either option against Narduzzi is going to be a monumental struggle. I also worry about playing Pittsburgh off a bye, especially if Collins looks the same in practice. In my humble opinion a true miracle needs to happen in the next two weeks. Let’s hope we get one. Go Orange!!!!

We have to run draws, counters, play 2 running back sets, play action on 2nd down and screen passes.

Play meathead football to create more ball control, keep the other team off the field, and let your big line just worry about push.

If Nixon can't adjust and tries to throw it 40 or 50 times again against a team that just beat Florida State, maybe he's not the genius we thought he was.

Mostly this is on Nixon being too stubborn with the offense. Stop throwing it so damn much, use play action on 2nd downs and roll the pocket. We have big guys on the line. Let's run the ball.
I'm not sure this is Nixon being "stubborn" or that the solutions are as simple or obvious as you imply.

We are averaging about 34 rushing attempts per game and 42 passing attempts, even with the early scoring deficits that have dictated more passing. The problem is not the play calling as much as it is the ineffectiveness of the rushing offense (3.3 yds/attempt). Yup, we have "big guys" on the line, but they have not been good at run blocking for the most part. That's systemic more than it is play calling, IMO.

Play action is not nearly as effective without the rushing threat. And this is further compounded by teams forcing RC to throw.

We have seen what Nixon's offense can do when QB1 is effective. Any real improvement has to start there.

Nah. We don’t.

Fran will pull another dude from the portal.

See: McCord & Angeli.

This is the way.

“Not feeling the love from your P4 factory program?

And be adored by the fanbase.”

It’s an easy sell now, because we don’t need “belief without evidence”.
We’ve got 2 for 2 years of exactly this happening for our transfer QB’s.

Hitting on a high ranked HS QB croot would be a bonus.

1. Portal guys won't always pan out.

2. As this season shows we need a QB2. Getting a Top 50 HS QB gives us a QB2 and potentially a future starter. This is where I have the issue.

I think in FBS games it is 43-34 but some of those 34 are sacks and scrambles. We have been behind in a few games but even vs Clemson when we were up, trying to kill clock, and had QB2 in we were still throwing it more than running it.

" Should we be worried that Fran’s first class was outside the Top 100 and second class outside the Top 75? "

Wait, HRE Otto IV , 247 rankings have us at:

#37- 2024,
#44- 2025, and so far
#26 for 2026.

What am I missing here?

QB class

Edit

247 has
Lott 88th
Belin 97th
Carney 117th

I wasn't counting Williams but he was at least 51st. We need to have better QB depth. At some point in the season you will need QB2 for a stretch. And that is assuming we keep hitting on our portal QBs, which won't always happen.

I don't think asking Fran to bring in a Top 50 QB every year is a big ask. And doing so should give us the quality depth that we will need.

Fran may not want to over pay for an unproven high school qb. Already saw so far when you overpay for a transfer that was highly rated in high school. Way more busts in high school qbs to overspend on nil.

Did Pitt throw money at their QB? The Top 30-50 range shouldn't be overly expensive. Our guys aren't even Top 80.

Hopefully they have some game experience though (like Angeli) just pulling people from factories (like Collins) with no real game experience could just be a waste of NIL.

To be fair, I seem to remember several Texas HS coaches said that had Carney played in a public school league he would have been a top recruit.

This board is the only place in the world where people are worrying about someone losing their redshirt. Those days are long gone.
The Player who makes money each season he's playing should care about his redshirt. Blowing a redshirt for a kid costs that player a lot of career NIL earnings.

While I agree preserving a redshirt isn't paramount, a coach showing he will ignore his players earning potential by frivolous blowing of redshirt years will eventually hurt recruiting.

It's an attention to detail thing that should be considered before making a decision.
