From Ken Pomeroy's blog . . . a summer piece he did on Average Possession Length (APL), which is a more sophisticated measure of a team's preferred pace than the more common measure of Adjusted Tempo. Tempo is usually measured by total number of possessions per game, but APL breaks it down into Offensive APL and Defensive APL. Syracuse has exhibited a downward trend in tempo of late - ranking 177, 209 and 252 the last three seasons. But the offensive possessions have been notably faster - 133, 12 and 41. The overall number is dragged down because the zone defense forces longer possessions on our opponents. The thing that is going to blow igor's mind is that Pomeroy has quantified a distinct correlation between the length of defensive possessions and overall defensive efficiency.
