Maliq Brown starting at Duke

Good for him, but he no longer wanted to be at SU. Everyone should get over it.
I am over it. Was one of my favorite players ever. Sadly because only got the 1 year (and went to Duke), couldn't make it officially into my top 5. Just posting to show he's someone that would have been a big help, obviously. AND I understand it was a decision he made to leave.

Bold take of the day -- Brown to the NBA. To make it from Syracuse in its current state he'd have to be flashier, more explosive, more take-over. But at Duke his game will get noticed. Wouldn't be shocked if he gets a chance.

I agree. Brown could be one of those bench players that sticks around the league for 10 years - a guy nobody has ever heard of. He can defend multiple positions at a very high level. He won't give you much on offense, but he will take advantage of every easy opportunity. No mistakes, high percentage player. Smart.

Even if that were to happen, we'd still have a portion of our fanbase rationalizing how his departure was no big deal, because he "couldn't" do X, Y, or Z.

Who cares if all advanced stats shows he's one of the best defenders in the league and efficient on offense, if he can't do a Shammgod into a triple axel, I don't want him.

He was playing less and less as the season progressed. Since the beginning of the year, their last 3 games he’s played only 28 minutes total. Maluach 7’2” center has really improved taking most of the minutes now and Patrick Ngongba, another 6’11” center has been out injured this season after foot surgery is predicted to be able to play more soon. Love Maliq but he’s regressed offensively from his SU days. Watching him there, he still runs the court very well but on fast breaks he doesn’t even look to score just passing it out, I don’t know if he’s coached not to shoot nor be a part of the offense other than setting screens and passing off but he’s very reluctant to ever shoot even when wide open. His stellar defense is his contribution to Duke’s team. Maluach, Ngongba and Mason Gillis, a 6’6” grad transfer from Purdue, are expected to get his minutes. Hoping he recovers but do wonder about his future minutes there. He was helping Duke when he played defensively and as a consummate team player, he would have helped if he had stayed here too and I think his offense would have continued to improve.

think baye moussa keita. the mooseman. he played behind Raxmas and DC2 but when we needed defense he was the man in the middle. i believe that's how duke sees maliq. defensive specialist.

Yeah i Think he could have taken the next step here easily as he just needed to improve his attempts at shooting. He could shoot he just didnt. Great all around kid who i personally miss this year.

The one thing our current team needs is a defensive presence including his steals, deflections. I went back 11 seasons back to 2014-2015 and this is the first year we have ever had less steals in a season than our opponents. We are averaging only 4.6 steals vs 8 steals for our opponents. Last year MaliQ led us in steals with 71 and Mintz was next with 67 and we averaged 9.1 steals to opponents 6.3 steals/game.

Damn I did not realize how much he was being marginalized there. 5 points per 40 minutes is hard to do; even our dreadful team doesn't have anyone scoring less than 6 lol.
Last I checked he was averaging about 19 minutes per game. In 15 games he has made 16 shots. 20 if you include free throws.
