Maliq Brown starting at Duke

He was playing less and less as the season progressed. Since the beginning of the year, their last 3 games he’s played only 28 minutes total. Maluach 7’2” center has really improved taking most of the minutes now and Patrick Ngongba, another 6’11” center has been out injured this season after foot surgery is predicted to be able to play more soon. Love Maliq but he’s regressed offensively from his SU days. Watching him there, he still runs the court very well but on fast breaks he doesn’t even look to score just passing it out, I don’t know if he’s coached not to shoot nor be a part of the offense other than setting screens and passing off but he’s very reluctant to ever shoot even when wide open. His stellar defense is his contribution to Duke’s team. Maluach, Ngongba and Mason Gillis, a 6’6” grad transfer from Purdue, are expected to get his minutes. Hoping he recovers but do wonder about his future minutes there. He was helping Duke when he played defensively and as a consummate team player, he would have helped if he had stayed here too and I think his offense would have continued to improve.
In the future, looking back on his season at Duke, Brown can say "At least I got to play the out of conference schedule before losing all my playing time."

I almost never hold a grudge against a guy for transferring, but for some reason this one really made me angry.

Personally I was disappointed with his flipped decision to leave but if he thought he could be coming off the bench with the addition of Eddie and Donnie, I guess he figured coming off the bench at Duke was better and probably a more fiscally sound decision than staying. What also bothered me is that MaliQ had his best game against Duke last year in his entire time here - 26 points, 7 rebounds and then he transferred to them, a conference foe. At Duke whether he played much or not this season, weakened a conference opponent and got a player who played very well against them - double blow by Duke. Maliq had 17 games last year where he scored in double digits for us while averaging over 7 rebounds a game, overall averaging 9.5 points a game. He did, despite many comments on this board, have an offensive game too, that he really hasn’t shown at all at Duke. I do think he could have progressed offensively more at SU like he did over his 2 years here than at Duke. His choice though and hoping he recovers from his injury.

And Jyare's recent 33 minutes per game and starting would have been all Maliq. Granted, when Donnie comes back that will change, but it would have been impossible in my mind to keep Maliq off the court very long regardless of whether he started or not. Too bad but oh well. This just in line with other recent cuse sports disappointments.

Would have been interesting to see what Red did once the wheels fell off this season if he had Maliq coming off the bench while starting Donnie Bell and Lampkin.

7 pages on a guy a lot of people weren't worried about losing. Y'all are wild.

BTW, his current BPM is more than 2x our current best BPM out of our full roster. And his DBPM is more than 4x.

Now let's go back to our 8-8 team that hasn't beaten anyone with a NET better than 130 with the guys that Red constructed his roster with.

It was the perfect situation for what he wanted. He could get paid, and he could be a guy off the bench.

Brown did not want to stay. His choice. He was not forced out. Next.

A lot of people weren't worried about losing?? Not what I remember. In fact, I went back to the old "Brown to Duke" thread, and here are a few comments just on the first page...

- First one (transfer) that really sucks.
- Kill me
- I'm done. Just can't do it anymore
- Huge loss. Ugh
- Danggggg
- Dammit
- This blows
- We can't compete in the basketball work anymore. What a shame
