Maliq Brown

I mean...JBA went in the portal.

He could "go" play at another D1 school. It's not crazy to suggest it.

Unless you are suggesting not 1 d1 team would want him, like JBA

He would be the same developmental guy somewhere else and a coach would need to take a chance on him.

JB seems to not beat him up like the others, if anything maybe time will open up for him here at some point?

I kinda seen him as a Rick Jackson. Hopefully we can still have guys like that on that growth curve.

Forwards should be

Taylor/Bell
Williams/Brown

Whoever is playing better that game should get the minutes...

JBA should play if the team needs energy and a spark.

Ajak was excellent tonight and is very good on defense. Brown will play but ajak passes very well and plays defense better right now. Board coaching experts need to relax a bit.

JBA will play when teams zone us plus if he continues to make his teammates around him better. I'm not sure if we have ever had a player with so little expectations that has put an indelible stamp on two straight games.

Brown and Bol both look good out there. Bell’s flashy but man is he bambi on defense. We can’t have that in league play.

Benny’s physical. He’s goofy but he can mix it up.

Bell’s just not there yet imo
What about Bell is flashy? Outside bring wide open threes I don’t see him doing much.

For sure. Im not suggesting he go. I think this program would be a great spot for him.

but you asked like it’s not an option. It 2022, it is.

Im sure the dunk will excite plenty. He already draws premature comparisons to Dirty (from myself included).

Do we know this for sure? Seems like it’s possible some schools wanted him that he wasn’t interested in?

Perhaps he went in the portal just to see if he could find a situation he liked better and didn’t find it, not necessarily that he wanted to be gone at all costs but absolutely nobody was interested?

well...there is some info about him rumored, but...

to answer your question.

he did go into the portal.
he came back to Syracuse.
I don’t believe it was due to not finding a better situation.

So you’re saying JB made some promises on minutes. Now that I can believe.

It may just be simply a timing thing but last night the team was not able to break away from Oakland during the first ten minutes or so and seemed disorganized on both ends of the floor. Jon Bol entered the game and immediately the team settled down. Both the offense and defense started to smooth out. This is similar to the ND game except he played many more minutes at ND. Jon Bol seems to be the "little gear" that make the big gears run smoothly. At least for two games he has been the catalyst to better the flow of the game for the Orange. His last play, seconds before the first half buzzer, when he grabbed a rebound and fired it the length of the floor to Mintz for a layup was a heads up play.

Brown reminds me a little of the power forward at VT. I thinks it’s Potts. He’s more refined than Brown, but they many of the same attributes.

You must mean Mutts. Real good player. Had a triple double vs us last year.

Anything JBA can do, Brown can do better.

I didn’t notice any issues with Brown’s defense when he was playing forward (he’s definitely a WIP as an emergency 5). He’s clearly a better rebounder and finisher than JBA. They’re both above average passers for their position.

In terms of size, JBA is one or two inches taller than Brown, but Brown has a 7-1 wingspan.

Don’t get me wrong, I like JBA. There are enough minutes for both of them. But if we’re talking about the usual short rotation, Brown makes the most sense both in the short term and the long term.

Just rewatched some of the game. Didn’t watch Brown yet, but noticed that Ajak plays defense much more actively than Benny. Benny frequently stands there with flat feet until something happens. Ajak is constantly bouncing and anticipating. Ajak also communicates a lot better and the whole team seemed to pick up their defense and became more active when he was in. He even boxes out. I really want Benny to succeed but he’s just not active and anticipatory out there and doesn’t do the fundamental little things that add up outside of the box score.

we need a new Benny thread.

Not prepared to say "Brown can do anything JBA can do better" at this point. I think we are very much on the same page as far as potential long term. But at this very moment - last few games and few more going forward until Brown can show he understands the defense - JBA is the better overall fit. Brown is definitely a better rebounder and finisher but we have not seen him in a game situations with starters from the opposing team. JB does not put him out there! Has to be a reason. JBA in the last two games is the change that sparked the team. Brown has a much, much higher ceiling but as of right now JBA provides what the team seems to need to play together. Others on the board claim the real key is getting Benny out of the game. This could be what is really happening and only JB and the coaching staff really know.
