Man we suck at the portal

Where did we rank on portal in Fran’s first haul? I recall Diggs and McCord but who else?
I believe in the 30’s. Grant was also a highly rated transfer, along with Zeed Haynes. I know people use Meeks as an example, but even he had a higher transfer rating than most of this years haul. Plus, McCord and Diggs were both very highly rated, proven players who produced at the highest level of P4.

Personally, this is how i would categorize priory transfers.

1. Upperclassman who produced at the highest level of CFB.

2. POY, 1st/2nd team all-league, G5.

3. DII POY’s, 1st all-league

3. High upside Rs Fr/So. from high end P4, who have yet to prove themselves.

4. Upperclassman G5 role players that have produced, but not all-league. System guys that fill a hole

5. High end P4 who have yet to produce after 2 years out of college, especially QB.

+ last year’s class was good and in theory players are supposed to get better over their careers.

Samuels, Deslauriers are already good. Have heard the staff really loves some of the younger linemen on both sides of the ball, but traditionally tough to do much in the trenches as a true frosh. I expect some of those guys to be much bigger contributors this season.

We're gonna see huge strides on the OL next season. We'll go as far as they take us.

Noteworthy.
Maybe some return, maybe others won't be allowed to return - or do we have to honor their scholly if they return?
I think that there are still a lot of guys that have to decide between being competing for 3rd string at a top 40 school, competing for 2nd string at the next tier, or competing for 1st string at FCS. Example: Carney. What if his options are competing for 3rd string at TCU, competing for 2nd string at Tulsa, and competing for 1st string at an FCS school in Texas? No right or wrong answer here.

See what happens at Houston.

frankly i'm not jumping out of my chair yet fran . recruiting is cool. portal is much quicker .
and who here honestly still believes in the NCAA that loyalty means more than money ?
apologies to george bailey.(that was family). but it never did in my job.

McCord, Diggs, and Hayes where all 91-92 rated and we had the 24th best portal class.
2025 we dropped down to 68th...where we seemed to go all in on High end P4 kids that had little to no production
I agree with your priority of transfers, PRODUCTION, PRODUCTION
Most of the transfers this year are 87-88 and we are at 34th best class

We love college football because you recruit HS kids and watch them develop into upperclassmen. It's now basically an NFL off season but at hyperspeed. The draft is equivalent to recruiting. Signing expensive free agents is the same as chasing known P4 guys that you have to pay up for. ...and then you have the same back of the roster churn with undrafted free agents versus signing small school guys and former four stars that haven't had the production.

Like everything we tend to overvalue our players versus outsiders. We project Yasim Willis into a bruising 100+ yards per game beast but there are a ton of RBs out there and we'll be fine. Johntay and Emmanuel Ross were great athletes but the Penn State kid and the Miami of OH kid will probably pass them in production. I can't imagine college coaches having to deal with completely remaking their rosters over a two week period every year. I don't know what Fran & Co will do with the players but Syracuse would be in trouble if they didn't have a recruiter like him at the helm.

Multi-year contracts with limited exceptions will start to apply. Exception being NFL draft or perhaps a certain school... .(i.e. kid from Louisiana gets an exception if LSU makes an offer of 150+% the value of the current contract, etc.)

penn st's new HC matt cambell brings half of iowa st's roster to happen valley and all we are able to flip is one player ? (WR Outten
and we send them Ibn.) meanwhile VA TECH has raided their locker for 9 players ! what gives ?

Needless to say, portal rankings are based on P5 production. The lower the comp level or the lower the production the lower the ranking. If we're not getting a McCord level guy for a lot of money, I'd spend on the lower comp level guys who produced wherever they are. I'd also value scheme fit and culture fit quite a bit.

That’s not necessarily true. N. Texas alone had the #3 transfer alone and another in the top 25. There were at least 5 in the top 100 and plenty more as you got deeper into the rankings.

And this year has been an outlier. Last year there were approximately 23 non-P4 players in the top 100 and many more as you got deeper. Sure these kids were extremely productive and conf POY’s, 1st team all league , etc to the one.
