Rahme mentioned him in today's article, and I have been really, really high on him since we signed him. I'm not sure why he isn't mentioned more on this board.

He had some really good offers out of JUCO, was Player of the Year in the state and in his conference, and can absolutely fly off the edge like nobody we have seen since Freeney (IMO).

There will be a learning curve, as Rahme said, but I think his potential impact on third downs (especially of 5 yards and more) will be huge.

I think he has been, its just that people haven't seen him and don't know what to expect.

In my mind, MPB is one of the MOST important players on this year's squad. If we can get bookend pass rush from any combination of the DEs, this defense is really going to come together. Sharpe, Simmons, MPB, Robinson, whoever--we need it to happen, and Pierce-Brewster is the most likely candidate.

Good. This team is desperate for a starting RDE. The *Patriot really screwed us (j/k I don't blame Chandler for leaving...but I will have to root for him to be a colossal bust).

* Cheaters, tainted championships

Given some of the struggles Goggins had when he initially transferred here from JUCO, I keep expectations low for that first year. Some can jump right in (Taj Smith), others need time to adjust. Goggins worked through it thankfully.

Hopefully MPB fully adjusts right away, but for a variety of reasons it's not always that easy.

I have a hard time getting too excited about transfers, JUCOs, etc. until they actually qualify and join the team.

Wasn't that South Florida DE with long-arms and three names a JUCO product? (Jason Pierre-Paul...just looked it up)

I agree with the concerns noted in this thread about JUCOs.

FWIW, I felt that MPB had the most impressive tape of anyone we signed this year. I think/hope he will be a playmeaker from day 1.

Shared that thought with DM...his response: "we think he is a "killer"...and wait till you see the TE from Michigan!"

Based on that, I think that MPB, Broyld, and Thompson will be the impact newcomers this year...

Throw in Julian Whigham and I agree 100% with your impact players this year.

Yeah but that three-name guy isn't any good. Couldn't even manage to get 20 sacks last year, and his team barely won the Super Bowl. Yawn!
I heard that too...guess you can't expect the world out of a player that played at a Sunshine Directional school. Even if he was a 5-star recruit. What a bust.

I'm really excited about Whigham / Morgan / Ford / the talent last year's class will bring to the secondary.

We are really stockpiling some talent in that group. That, plus the year-over-year continuity of the players / starters we'll return next year suggests that our secondary is going to be a HUGE position of strength for the foreseeable future.

We desperately need talent in the secondary. Not so sure we have "stockpiled" any yet, but I agree with you about the potential of the 3 players you have listed.

Check out the article in today's OE post about the defensive secondary. We go three deep with scholarship players at all secondary positions, with the third string being Morgan / Whigham / Ford / McFarlane.

I think the competition at DB is going to be intense this summer, and make for a quality product on the field. And this group might only lose Shamarko this offseason [pending unforeseen attrition]. That's a LOT of returning talent next year.

Future looks bright in the secondary.

That's a lot of returning numbers; not so sure how talented they are...yet.

But I agree with you, we are in far better shape in teh secondary then we have been in a long time.

I hope not. I hope he plays stronger, meaner, more aggressively...

I think it may 'potentially' be the best collection of secondary talent we've ever had at the same time.

(and of the group Shamarko is the only senior)

I am hoping he will at least be a force in our Okie package, where his speed and ability to get to the QB could be very helpful. Put Simmons and MPB at the DE positions and Goggins at NT and we might be able to rush the passer without having to blitz.

Our inability to pressure the QB without using a blitzer has been a major weakness of the recent defensive units. This area, this issue, is one of the key things that has to be addressed in order for the team to have a successful year. Don't know if the pieces will work well together but for the some time in a while, we have the right number of pieces and I can see where they might well together well.

I think that we might end up seeing one of the DB's morph into a LB such as devonte

I think losing Kevyn Scott will be an addition by subtraction this year. I don't mean to diminish what Kevyn was as a leader and representative of SU, but he got picked on A LOT last year... I am very excited to see what Lyn can do when healthy.

I agree completely. Kevyn was a TREMENDOUS representative of SU. Seriously, we would be lucky to have more kids like him come through the program. But he just wasn't a starting caliber D1 corner.

Edit: let me amend that to BCS level starting corner.

The issue will be the safeties. We will have lots of CBs. Some of the candidates for safety are undersized for the role. The only safety candidates with projected D-1 size are frosh -- and haven't played a single game.

I hear ya, but at least Eskridge has a RS season under his belt. Great prospect.

No question he would've been a D-III AA at Rutgers.

Chan's tearing it up in camp right now. Don't expect him to bust.

But MPB is going to have to be a very important player for our defense. If he's not we might struggle.
