Marrone Anti-Tradition?

Troy Nunes@troynunes
ok folks, i'm pumping breaks, lets all do the same. spoke with some folks, misunderstanding of the circumstances. #goorange leave it at that

And with that, the arguments in here seem to be moot.

Translation needed. Does TN mean to say that he is pumping brakes? Or is that some sort of hip hop allusion?

I graduated in May 2011, but in Fall 2010, the football team would come with the band after home wins to flip the banner. Has that changed in the last 2 years?
Louis, the only time the players came were for away games. Home games they never went.

Not sure how I got that mixed up. Clearly I'm getting old fast.

Hey Troy, next time think before you senf out inflamatory messages out over social media!

Classic damage control spin...misunderstanding my arse...what about the if it wasn't for some good people that still work there I would never go back comment...Sounds a bit like he has spent some time on the Romney campaign trail...:)

Not sure what winning and losing streaks has to do with this. We're not 0-7, so clearly there have been some banners flipped at Varsity. I was just curious if they still go to Varsity after each win to flip the banners.
Also, it would be ironic if this was brought up to support Marrone's dedication to tradition and they don't do it anymore.

I see the irony. My immediate thought on that was even if they only did it one time it was still a nice gesture steeped in SU football tradition. I believe they did do it more than once, but it's not something I would expect them to do after every win in the dome. I wouldn't expect them to do it after a win against Stony Brook. And while beating Pitt and UConn were big wins at home, I think it makes sense to hold off on the gesture until the team has a winning record or has secured a bowl bid. And even then it may not be feasible for a whole host of other reasons. I just remember being happy when they did do it in 2010.

Now axe says he's going to do some more digging on the issue. Great Idea axe

EDIT: Coach Marrone actually talked a bit about respecting past letterwinners, pride in being one himself, etc. after a feature story on an organization of past Orangemen supporting current players during today's "Syracuse Sidelines" episode. Total coincidence, and in no way a reaction to this "story" but interesting timing to say the least.

Gotcha. Thanks. I don't know why I never knew this!?!

It's pretty awesome. And Varsity is usually pretty quiet on away Saturdays. It wasn't difficult to get in there in 2010 (I don't recall going last season - not a ton of opportunities).

Anybody got a picture of Marci, just for old times sake? Bees...I know you have one...As long as we're reminiscing, anyone remember Barbi from the old West Virginia site...ah, the good ol days...

Having gone to school on the hill during the Nunes era (at least 'Melo saved my four years from being a total disaster in basketball and football), I can confirm he was a pretty big . Walked around campus with the damn backwards hat and thought his didn't stink.

But, of course, he did overachieve and start for the better part of four years. So we should revere him. Or something like that.

Marrone is the most pro tradition coach I have ever seen.

He might be anti agent, or anti distractions in the middle of a week preparing for a crucial game, but he isn't anti tradition. Former players should be given special privileges to the program, should be welcomed back with open arms, but there are limits to everything.

Most of all, when there are problems, don't ever take sides against the family. I am very disappointed in Nunes. The magic is gone.

Tom,

To clarify, by magic, you mean insane-laced decision-making that lead to What plays and ultimately losses?

I just had a conversation the two days with guy who is friends with Gedney. In the conversation he mentioned to me that Gedney himself mentioned that he does not feel accepted into Marrone's program. I had no idea this stuff as going on with Nunes as we were having this conversation. Of course it could be speculation, but I thought it was interesting connection point.

Really? And my barber's girl friend's brother knows Scott Schwedes who feels the same way.

Not to mention that Gedney works for the Athletic Dept.

You have a straight barber?

Look RMH, I understand that you are skeptical. I was at a conference in Ohio chatting with a guy who is connected to another college athletic department. I told him about my personal connections with SU and that I am a fan. He shared about his friendship with Gedney and that they had discussed about Gedney not feeling accepted in the Marrone current infrastructure. I'm not sure why this would be made up or lied about, but it is true that it cannot be "proven." I just wanted to share that bit of info in light of some of the other football alumni responses to this Nunes situation. I thought the correlation between having that conversation, completely outside of any of this current information, and this thread was interesting.

That was a reference to Sean Keeley excellent web site TNIAAM.

I am with Bees, the criticism of Troy has gone over the top. I enjoyed watching him play, he wasn't perfect but he made a lot of good plays, played a big role in getting some good wins and was in retrospect a much better QB than we would see for a long time afterwards.

I am glad to see him back down a bit on what he tweeted earlier. Doug Marrone doesn't do a good job, he does a great job in a lot of ways establishing and preserving SU football traditions. But he has weaknesses like everyone and it appears he could be better at making former players feel part of the program, doing things to make them feel welcome.

His focus is clearly on other things. As others have said, it really shouldn't be all on him to deal with this issue. Someone in the program needs to be assigned the duty of working with the former players and ensuring they remain part of the program, feel welcome, have opportunities to participate, etc.

We haven't had that for years and it really is on the AD to address it. Things that Joe Manhertz and Reggie Terry did are just not being done anymore.

That's funny because I would think that it is Gedney's job to make people feel a part of the program.

Bnoro, you just graduated from SU, no? Don't you expect a little respect whenever you return to campus? If these guys are convicts or stains on society, then fine. But if some unwelcome culture for past alums actually exists (not agreeing yet that it does), then it must be fixed.

Well, when are they showing up - in the middle of practice? I mean, it's nice that they come back to visit, but time and place is everything. These guys are working hard and trying to focus when they get out there to practice. They don't want to have to break that to welcome players from past teams and say hi to their kids. Now, if this is happening outside of practice hours and then they're getting the cold shoulder, well that's another thing.
