Marrone Anti-Tradition?

How would Nunes, Ojinnaka, and that other guy have felt if Billy Scharr showed up, unannounced, on some Wednesday afternoon in 2000, 48 hours before a huge road trip, stomping his feet and demanding that the coaching staff take time away from the task at hand to socialize?

This is absurd. In the middle of a work week in October, Marrone's professional responsibilities entail getting his kids ready to win a football game. If Nunes weren't behaving like an angry 13-year-old boy, he'd recognize this and be thankful that someone is working hard to help his alma mater.

I agree, OttoMets.

Nunes, to some, is some sort of SU folk hero. They say he was thrust into the QB role out of desperation created by injuries to and failings of others and by recruiting "whiffs" on big time QB recruits. They insist he wasn't as bad as many thought. And that his statistics bear that out.

Unfortunately for me I watched many of those Troy Nunes efforts.

Troy Nunes, In my opinion, given his size and talent level and football acumen got more out of SU football than he had any right to expect and more than any player I can think of. He lucked into a starting job based on what happened to others and what others did. And he played "Big Time" college football at the QB position, a dream to many.

So rather than take his fortunate experience and steal into the night, he's now criticizing the current staff for not paying enough attention to him?

Someone ought to send Troy a video with some clips of him running full-speed away from the line of scrimmage back to the 50 yd line out of field goal range. Or throwing the ball into the hands of two BC linemen at their own goal line.

Things are starting to heat up about this particular subject over at nunesmagician. Will be interesting to see how this develops. Making a mountain out of a molehill? Total BS distraction if you ask me especially as we are entering such a crucial game that could help propel us into (or out of) bowl contention.

only distraction is here on the message boards. nobody up on the hill gives a fluck that troy nunes got his panties in a bunch.

Marrone is the most pro tradition coach I have ever seen.

He might be anti agent, or anti distractions in the middle of a week preparing for a crucial game, but he isn't anti tradition. Former players should be given special privileges to the program, should be welcomed back with open arms, but there are limits to everything.

Most of all, when there are problems, don't ever take sides against the family. I am very disappointed in Nunes. The magic is gone.

Yes. On his first day here Marrone began talking about the tradition of this program. He has shown nothing but gratitude for his experience at SU as a student-athlete, and I can't imagine another coach valuing SU's history and tradition more than Marrone. The tweets seem to me petty at best.

So many images come to mind. I recall the team going to the Varsity after wins. I recall the way Marrone cherished the Schwartzwalder trophy. I believe he gives these kids tutorials on the history all the time.

  • The title of the original Post "Marrone Anti-Tradition?" is misleading, in fact it is downright stupid. The Nunes tweet never said or implied that, simply that he felt snubbed during a visit. Marrone has been all about respecting SU tradition from Day 1.
  • I assume someone can confirm the tweets did in fact come from the players indicated. Lots on imposters out there (although why someone would want to impersonate Troy Nunes is beyond me)
  • People need to be more careful about firing off tweets "unencumbered by the thought process".
  • Nunes tweet said he had his son with him, who he was no doubt trying to impress with his SU legacy. This no doubt contributed to his reaction.
  • None of us know exactly what transpired during the ex-player visits in question. I assume they introduced themselves and Marrone realized who they were. If it was a question of the ex-players showing up unannounced at an inopportune time, a reasonable way to handle it would have been to invite to meet them at a later time. Neither Nunes nor Ojinnaka played for Marrone, so it's not like they have a personal relationship.

Good points. If the tweets are from imposters then boo imposters. If the tweets are authentic then maybe the authors might want to re-tweet their second and better thoughts on the misunderstanding.

(BTW. what's with people who can only focus, remember, and store up nothing but negative memories?)

Only relevant with respect to politics. And ex-spouses.

You obviously don't read this board.

Regardless of how Troy Nunes was "treated", he officially is marked down as FAIL in my book for publicly mocking the school that gave him a 4 yr education (tuition free might I add), which helped him get into a lucrative business. Without Syracuse, who knows where his career would be. This is something that you should privately take up with the school versus cowardly tweeting your dissatisfaction for the world to see behind your Twitter handle. Joke.

Troy Nunes, shame on you.

I wonder how many followers he actually has. It's not like he's Alec Baldwin tweeting his disatisfaction over the service his barista provided.

Doesn't matter if he has 20. It is cowardly.

I'm not disagreeing with you. Just wanted to get the Alec Baldwin reference in here since his tweets were/are a great source of amusement in the twitter universe.

Does it matter? They had a losing streak. Let's hope they have a winning streak and see what happens.
Not sure what winning and losing streaks has to do with this. We're not 0-7, so clearly there have been some banners flipped at Varsity. I was just curious if they still go to Varsity after each win to flip the banners.
Also, it would be ironic if this was brought up to support Marrone's dedication to tradition and they don't do it anymore.

They're not imposters.

If I were a betting man (and I'm not) I'd take the odds that if/when this incident is brought to HCDM's attention that he'll reach out to TN. I'd also be willing to bet, that when this happens, DM will do it privately rather than airing dirty laundry publicly. That will put the ball squarely in TN's court...will he scramble toward the wrong end zone or will he run for positive yardage?

I didn't intend to mislead anyone. The title was a question based on the angry reaction of Troy Nunes. If you read my first post, you'd see that I took it incredulously, as I take all of Doug's pro-history pro-Syracuse speak at face value.

What I agree with is your final point. Until we know more, it's most likely that the "Doug is a failure when it comes to treating ex-players with respect" viewpoint and the "Troy Nunes is a whiny baby" viewpoint are both hyper-reactionary.

Like some have posted, he should have called either the FB Office or Gedney to say he would like to stop by. It's common courtesy. Do you think that Tirico, Costas or Scooch just decide to pop in to Newhouse when they are in town? No, they call ahead.

And Marci, don't forget Marci.

;)

Only after road wins (the band flips them after home wins). And only if Varsity is open. Sometimes they'll stay open late, but they won't, for instance (if we're fortunate enough to win), hold the place open for the team to arrive at 3:00 a.m. on Sunday.

I graduated in May 2011, but in Fall 2010, the football team would come with the band after home wins to flip the banner. Has that changed in the last 2 years?

Edit: Never mind, I've been corrected.

if the last one to leave could please please lock this thread up on your way out, it'd be appreciated.

I don't believe this is true. The team has almost never come to Varsity after home wins, and certainly didn't in Fall of 2010. We only had two home wins that season, I went to Varsity after both (even recording one of them), and there were no players there. They would have to move pretty fast to sit thru the coaches' post-game comments, then shower & change in time to make it down to M-Street.

Gotcha. Thanks. I don't know why I never knew this!?!
