my buddy is an agent who has a few former cuse players as clients with close ins to the program... said very little chance anyone gets drafted in 2016. only shot is broyld but a lot of teams are scared of his past.

at least grob left the liquor cabinet more stocked

I have to believe that the won-loss record has had some kind of impact - we were 3-9 team last year that should have been 2-10.

There is nothing more satisfying than winning 1 - 2 games a year and then having the thrill of seeing one of your favorite college players drafted in the 5th or 6th round.

I think the point was Marrone was able to use a lot of GROB's players. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall with the talent.

No one in their right mind would want to have GROB's record. Thats an idiotic post that clearly takes it out of context.

OK. Why are you so taken aback by this thread? Its very clear that GROB left us with more talent than Marrone did right? So i dont get why you are being a dick.

Marrone was obviously the better coach - but his recruiting in hindsight was awful. Grob's in hindsight was actually pretty good.

Shafer is on the verge of possibly having the best class in 18-20 years.

Also safe to say that Marrone was a better coach that Shafer and GROB. Also think Shafer can recruit better than Marrone. Problem is not much talent not much offensive coaching right now. Not a good mix and that is why we get what we got last year.

I don't ever see an overabundance of NFL Talent at Syracuse nor a bunch of 4 and 5 star kids, if your coach can't recruit and develop talent then you will be dead in the water.

Very good summary.

I'll add that Shafer can correct the "not much offensive coaching" by adding the right personnel on that side of the ball to remediate the gap. Time will tell whether Lester was the right choice at OC. If he is, disco moving forward. If not, then it won't bode well for our HC's longevity here.

Getting Washington to verbal if he sticks, gives the coaching staff a chance to up the level of talent it recruits. Until we see a number of 3 star recruits and at least a 4 every year things are not going to get much better. A good year is 6 wins for us a bad 3 until that happens. Even if Hunt was healthy all last year we maybe get 5 wins, big maybe.

it's hard to know this for sure but I think Shafer underestimated his own ability to recruit. he probably didn't need to take such a gamble on mcf***it.

I agree, it looks like his glaring weakness is offensive coaching, question is if he went too deep up front to recover.

i think NFL teams are willing to look past wins and losses. it would be pretty easy to pin everything on qb play

back when mario williams was drafted, their whole defensive line was drafted despite having an ordinary record. that's the one i always think of

Yep, exactly what I was getting at with my response to Millhouse. I think Shafer appeals to kids and parents, but with no offense it won't matter soon

seriously, if NFL scouts even consider Ws & Ls...then they should be fired on the spot.

Marrone only won 4 games in year 2, Shafer won 3. Shafer is also starting to land real talent. If we have no offense again this year then I say we need to consider changing things and the new AD probably will. No reason not to get behind this team this year though. No players drafted in 2016 is still on Marrone too, it's his class.

There's plenty of blame to go around. But c'mon. Marrone's biggest issue was not finding a Nassib replacement (or in Z.Allen's case - not sticking after Marrone left). Think on this years seniors. Great kids, but not NFL talent - and not one elite player at any position. That's on Marrone. Now think on this coming seasons seniors... Kind of the same issue.

I think Z.Franklin, Phillips, and Ish are all capable of growing into ACC-1st or 2nd teamers.

I disagree, Marrone didn't land big talents, he developed kids but that's about it. Most of the guys who became Marrone's star players were Grob guys. Grob could recruit the top of the food chain but our depth was horrible. Marrone recruited depth but no playmakers, I hope Shafer has the ability to do both.

Players like Custis, and Enoicy will develop into big time players, but it doesn't happen overnight. Custis was terribly used in last years offense, and Enoicy, after the surgery the staff elected to red-shirt him.
