Maryland files 157 million dollar countersuit against the ACC

What does Wake Forest/Pittsburgh officials talking to Big Ten members have to do with Maryland? That makes no sense.
Didn't receive the briefing? The real power in the ACC resides in Wake's hallowed halls. Also, Pitt has close ties to PSU and OSU (one shares th same state and the other shares a state border so we know they have close ties).

C'mon, get with the conspiracy.

The only other 2 that seem desireable are Michigan or Ohio State. UM would match up well academically in the ACC, not sure on OSU.

edit - Maybe an outside shot at Sparty as well. UM or MSU would make the most sense as it pertains to selling ND on full time membership.

Was it about desirability, location, of likelihood of happening (none are very high)?

I cant see anyone asking UM or OSU with a straight face. I just dont see any chance they would accept, especially UM. That said, besides PSU, I cannot pick a 2nd school that makes sense so who knows.

That's why I revised to include Sparty. They have the ND and PSU connections and might entertain the idea of getting out of UM's shadow similar to Texas A&M moving.

UM might be interested in leaving a struggling/dying conference to join like minded academic institutions though.

I have not read the filings, but on the surface this apears to be a frivolous claim.

There is no dispute that UMD approved of the initial withdrawal fee s they will owe no less than that number. The ACC has the right to withhold payments to UMD in lieu of UMD's dduty to pay the exit fee. The only real issue is how much UMD owes.

As to Pitt and Wake recruiting a B1G school, UMD is essentially giving strength to the ACC claim against the B1G for tortious interference. This is likely to go nowhere. I cannot see where B1G teams would be willing to allow public scrutiny of their inner workings in such a volatile situation. There is no benefit to the B1G's dirty laundry being aired out in a competitor's forum and a competitor's benefit. Plus UMD and the ACC did the same to the Big East - TWICE!

As to the $157MM one has to wonder where that number comes from. As no teams left the B1G, where is the loss? Assuming UMD could prove their entire case, they must still prove damages.

This guy must be running for Congress. Only Congress is allowed to pull numbers from their posterior and use them as if they are fundamentally sound.

I wonder if the $157 is based on the concept of "Treble Damages". The number would be in line.

Trading PSU and NWestern for Rutty and UMd.

That would have been hilarious.

b/c of "counsel and direction...received from ESPN," the ACC has tried to lure other schools "to extract more lucrative terms."

So.. let me get this straight.

ESPN has counseled the ACC to lure other schools to extract more lucrative terms... from whom? ...From ESPN!
so...ESPN has counseled the ACC to take certain actions so that ESPN will pay the ACC more money. And there is supposed to be some kind of wrongdoing there?
Like if I want to buy a house and I tell the owners I will pay more for it if they renovate the kitchen?

This isn't even frivolous. It doesn't make any sense. Also how does MD have standing for a tortious interference claim with the B1G anyway?

And... AND.. how can an institution burn bridges in this environment? I mean - who knows who you will end up in bed with a few years from now? It is just crazy stupid.
Cray-cray.

The Big 10 doesn't want that kind of lawsuit going forward, Maryland secretly conspired with the Big 10, they don't want their people to have to end up testifying, or secret negotiations becoming public records. Maryland will be told to drop the lawsuit, or find another conference.

AAC might make room.

Only after they take possession. The law may make an exception in Rutger's case. NOTE: The aaack is NOT suing the B1G for taking Rutgers, probably a defensive pasture for the impending lemon law claim.

rumor has it they paid of the big to take them -the aac was afraid of the monster that joisey state hoops could become after the 120 year project of making the football team relivent

I read on ESPN that UMD is claiming treble damages under antitrust. The basis being the ACC exit fee. The ACC should be on firm ground as an MD court ruled the ACC did not violate antitrust laws. This looks like a desperate attempt by UMD to gain leverage for negotiations.

Well played.

Office of the Attorney General spokesman says "The Big Ten schools involved must remain confidential until trial or discovery." Darn.

It has to be Penn State and no clue any other B1G school the ACC would realistically feel they could get. However, if you took a poll of Penn State fans they would prefer the ACC over the B1G because of how much hate they have for Jim Delany and the bias they feel is yielded to Michigan and Ohio State.
Northwestern

I just talked to a classmate from law school who practices in Maryland and the current Attorney General of Maryland is running for Governor in Maryland to replace Martin O'Malley and their is no doubt in my opinion that this is being done by Doug Gansler to get positive publicity for his gubernatorial campaign.

I wish I could like this 100x times the Chewbacca Defense
Ladies and gentlemen, this is Chewbacca . Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an 8-foot-tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of 2-foot-tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this case? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this case! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a lawyer defending a major record company, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're in that jury room deliberatin' and conjugatin' the Emancipation Proclamation, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed jury, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit! The defense rests.

You had me believing it...all of it

Second school would be N.D. how else did the big ten get Maryland.

They told them N.D. was all in,so just sign on the "DOTTED LINE" right now... and you become a new member today!!!!

And all they had to do to get Rutgers was a promise of new bath water every june
