Matt Park

When the student WAER broadcast does a better job than the school employed broadcaster you got problems.
Park doesn't need to be fired he just has to broadcast the game better. Enough with the dead spots when something bad happens.

Not sure how you can fault Matt for excitement or game descriptions? No announcer is perfect, with all that they're required to do over the air.

Listen to the highlights - I mean, this guy does a great job. I'm not sure we've ever had a better PBP guy at SU. Count yourselves lucky he's on our side.

It's easy to have any play by play sync with video of the game. It's another to help the listener understand what's going on in the game without the luxury of actually watching the game.

Park lacks excitement???

Excitement is easy to bring when there's a big play or a highlight. It's another thing to bring it throughout a game. Listen to the good ones, they build drama as it goes. Sorry, I just don't agree.

If SU wanted to pay for it we could have a better PBP guy. We have one of if not the deepest bench of broadcasters in the country.

I don't blame Park I just think his FB game calls are awful. He is fine at BB. At FB he just doesn't announce the game quickly and when something bad happens a lot of the times doesn't say it immediately.

There's nobody that comes close for me in terms of SU play-by-play greatness than Doug Logan. Absolutely love the guy.

I think Mark Johnson is probably more technically skilled than Matt Park, but I would gladly take Park over him because you can tell he's genuinely emotionally invested in SU sports whereas I think Johnson couldn't have cared less.

The worst part of the 2003 title was that jackass mark johnson is immortalized

I would keep Park if they would get rid of Veley. That dude ruins basketball games with his calls and isn't much better at football.
Park is Bob Costas at his job compared to. Mr.Excitement. Carl Eilenberg he not.

Agreed. Carl Eilenberg is a treasure and probably doesn't get the recognition he deserves. His voice is synonymous with basically an infinite list of legendary Dome moments.

Matt Park is the worst play by play guy I have ever listened to. Chris Gedney is equally awful. He grunts and makes all kind of sounds during the broadcast that are very unprofessional. Matt is constantly confused and mistaken about what is happening during the game. I'm surprised that he is still employed by SU. He is so bad it's embarrassing
This is just over the top. Park is good .. I'm sure he'll work on the down and distance information. But as far as being articulate, exciting and loyal to the program, not sure we've had a better one in my years (35+as a fan).

He could probably improve his down/distance information. Frankly, even attending games, the "to go" yardage is almost never up on the screen. Other than that, I think he's one of the best we've had at SU.

No offense to you .. I just disagree on this.

Go to Doug Logan's call at the 1:40 mark of this clip. Just completely losing his mind like we all were. Sigh, I want him back. (this video should say 1998, obviously)

I think his weakness is down/distance (which is also a stadium problem ... they almost never get the information on the billboard screen quickly). Other than that, he's exciting, articulate and loyal. There's a huge body of work he does (extremely well): player and staff interviews; bb recruiting; BB play-by-play; FB pre-season/spring games; other SU sports; SU Sidelines .. the list is long. And he does it all very well, in my book. If he gets his FB d/d reporting improved, I think radio fans will appreciate him more. If you're watching a television broadcast, you can see how far they have to go on the field. It's not that mysterious.

Hey addazio used to have some hair.

It astounds me that the Yankees keep a no talent schmuck like Sterling around. He single handedly cured me of being a Yankee fan. As for Matt, he's not perfect but I enjoy listening to him.

Woldman must have pictures on a Steinbrenner or 2, right?

I think Park is fine. He's better than some of the ESPN3 mopes or guys on Sirius like others have mentioned. Mr. Excitement needs to go. Quade needs to be like, "I'll come only if y'all get rid of that PA guy." What kind of dirt does he have on high ranking admins at SU?!

at least at the game you can see it with your eyes. the radio guy needs to accurately describe things for his listeners. he doesn't do that at all.

i missed the first quarter against Vtech because i had to run errands. i tried the radio feed while driving and couldn't stomach it. Instead pulled up the espn watch app on the phone just to listen. even though it lags in real time i don' care, the lag is better than listening to Park butcher what is actually happening.

1 beauty from the ND game I somewhat remember was his saying “Dungey back to pass, throw is behind Philips”….

(you’re thinking it was an incomplete pass) but Philips had actually caught the ball, I was like what?. He’s brutal and it’s like that all game long.

Did he leave it at that or follow up quickly with a "completed down to the xx yard line"? Hearing that a pass was behind a receiver wouldn't make me immediately think it was incomplete.

Another consideration is how dead radio is and how little money radio broadcasts make. I doubt the 27 listeners at any given time are a big concern for the school.

Outside of that Mrs. Lincoln, how was your night at the theater?

I like Matt a lot. I agree that precision is not his strong point in football. It wasn't Doug Logan's or Joel Mareiness's either. Most local play by play guys retain their jobs based on how colorful they are, how emotional they are and how loyal they are. They don't have the "just the facts" demeanor of someone employed by the national networks. I enjoy listening to Matt. I do wish he'd be more precise regarding down and distance. But I'm hardly ever joust listening to him on the radio. I either have my radio at the game or have the TV on while listening to the radio broadcast. So the lack of precision is not going to be decisive in my opinion of Matt.

Chris's grunts and sighs are not very professional but they are very eloquent. they describe the bad plays very well. I'm just glad he's stopped talking about players being "ripped across the face". What the heck does that mean?

The problem is, for those of us that may be traveling listening to a game, we have absolutely no clue what's going on when he's calling a game. It'd be more useful if they just played crowd noise and the PA announcer.

His job is to call the game. He spends far too much time talking about nonsense that does nothing to describe the actual game itself. I don't care what our record is against Wake Forest in rain games during fall months that end in 'tember'. Call the damn game.

Football doesn't go well with the radio, unless you have no other choice, especially now that you can get games on your phone.

I don't recall Matt saying anything like that in his broadcasts.

Speaking of announcers, the current Dome announcer sucks. Old-timers will remember Carl Eilenberg, the Mayor of Rome, NY who was the announcer for 20-30 years before retiring. He would not only make announcements, he would do play by play and give out of town scores. When was the last time you heard those in the Dome?

Well he kind of is one - I think 'dean' is part of his title. It'd be a little awkward to try to steer him out of the job; unless Boeheim wanted him gone for doing goofy things like announcing that we're holding a team to a record-low shooting percentage while the game is going on, Veley's probably going to be in place for as long as he'd like.

It's too bad, because he's terrible at it. Good guy, but brutal to listen to.
