Matt Park

Speaking of announcers, the current Dome announcer sucks. Old-timers will remember Carl Eilenberg, the Mayor of Rome, NY who was the announcer for 20-30 years before retiring. He would not only make announcements, he would do play by play and give out of town scores. When was the last time you heard those in the Dome?

Even better, he knew when not to talk. Possibly the most important part of the job.

I don't recall Matt saying anything like that in his broadcasts.

I'm being facetious on the quote, but his random thoughts instead of calling down, distance, time, result of play, etc. makes his broadcast next to worthless for a listener that can't see the play.

Well he kind of is one - I think 'dean' is part of his title. It'd be a little awkward to try to steer him out of the job; unless Boeheim wanted him gone for doing goofy things like announcing that we're holding a team to a record-low shooting percentage while the game is going on, Veley's probably going to be in place for as long as he'd like.

It's too bad, because he's terrible at it. Good guy, but brutal to listen to.
As I said Park is Bob Costas level good compared to Veley.
I legitimately don't like going to basketball games because of how much he talks. Veley ruins basketball games for me. He loves the sound of his voice and because he built the Sports Management school from scratch he basically has tenure.

Park doesn't annoy he obviously cares about the teams he just struggles on FB PBP.

Old timers? He retired in 2010. You make it sound like he called games at the Polo Grounds or something. ;)

I loved Carl's voice.

Ditto, He was all I knew for the vast majority of my life.

Coach Mac's use of "we" was unmatched in radio history.

Gawd love him.

Favorite ever Coach Mac comment, after a Jeff Danish tackle circa, 1995 or 1996. "Danish, that's Danish's kid right?" "Sure Coach". "Well, I think I'll have a danish!"

The local radio guy should always be a total homer. 99.8% of the people listening don't care about unbiased professionalism. They want someone who bleeds orange. Mac was awesome.

Not sure how you can fault Matt for excitement or game descriptions? No announcer is perfect, with all that they're required to do over the air.

Listen to the highlights - I mean, this guy does a great job. I'm not sure we've ever had a better PBP guy at SU. Count yourselves lucky he's on our side.
Park is terrible at his job. I hear local kids doing high school play by play that are much better. I can't believe that his superiors have not spoken to him about more accurately describing the events that occur during the game. That's what his job is! And gedney with his sound effects does not not sound well. Let's be honest the broad cast is terrible and very annoying and frustrating to listen to. Something needs to be done about it

What difference would it make, the sound system stinks and you can't understand a word he is saying. It's all echo in the Dome, the only thing said that is clearly understandable is "....and it's a Syracuse 1st Down!!" and "...third down and XX!!"

That's about all I can understand.

The Dome announcer job is also thankless. Carl was great and Mike is fine. He has different marching orders from the people that pay him, mainly get as many ads read in between action as possible. Getting Joe's Paint Shops read in is more important to the powers that be than updating us on the BC score.

I also agree with the comment on the sound system. I truly can't understand a word that comes out of the speakers during football games.

This is a good point, and one I should keep in mind when criticizing him. It's not like Veley's making the decision to drown out the crowd with commercials during every stoppage. He gets a little flak because of changes in the nature of the job that are associated with his tenure. (Of course, I also don't like his voice, his rhymes, and his verbosity. But we ought to give him a pass for the ads.)

The ads have nothing to do with why he sucks. That is obviously his job and I have no problem with that.
Veley talks way too much during the in-game to make himself known. This stuff he says sucks and is really annoying. Veley thinks he is part of the experience and that ruins it. He should learn less is better but he doesn't and wants to hear his voice. You described his voice well. Matt Park is an all time great at PBP compared to Veley doing announcing. Eilenberg was a master of just saying as little as possible and telling the people everything thy needed.
He doesn't learn and because the Sports Management school he isn't going anywhere.

Every time he says 'deuce for the Cuse' an angel gets set on fire.

I am thankful that the sound system at the Dome is now so muddled that you can no longer understand what Mr Excitement is trying to say.

Back when I was a kid and didn't go to many games (and almost none were on TV), I would listen on the radio and chart the games play by play.

Trying to do that really puts a premium on the play by play person and their ability to articulate down and distance on a consistent basis.

Joel was better at it that than Doug. It has just gotten worse since. Down and distance. Consistently. That is what I am looking for.

The good news is I only listen to radio these days when the TV play by play is really awful. Like Matt a like, great guy.

Football PBP is tough, especially with our scheme. But it would be good for him to put more of a focus on giving down and distance before each play starts.

Dave Pasch was the best technical guy we've had. And that's why he does NFL radio for the Cards and big time college games on ESPN

And it looks like he has replaced MT on ESPN NBA coverage

Eh, Mushnick's made a career of making mountains out of molehills. Keith and Ron were wrong in this instance, but they criticized Cespedes plenty this season. Keith stopped short of calling Cespedes a 'blockhead' (his pet name for Murphy for a couple years), but he and Gary clobbered Cespedes as recently as the last week of the season for one of his typical lazy baserunning efforts.

Mushnick once ripped a small college basketball team in Brooklyn for having two kids from Iceland on the team instead of Brooklyn kids. He's a clown.

This is not even close to true.
