Maui invitational

Jb said last time it was his last time going there - too far away and we don't recruit there.

They take only one school per conference. Every school wants to go there. And we're in a big conference.
It feels like duke or unc is there every year.

Didn’t some one mention that we were going back to Atlantis in Buddy’s senior year?

I'd rather go to Atlantis.
A guy I work with just went and said it was only a 90 min flight from Atlanta. I knew the Bahamas were close, but I had no idea they were that close. 10-12hrs closer than Hawaii sounds like a winner to me :)

Aside from the basketball, I did not enjoy Atlantis. The weather was monsoon-like horrible (rain and high winds every day that closed the beaches and some other outdoor activities); it was very casino-centric and kid-centric (I dislike casinos and you had to walk through a huge one to get from any point A to any point B); and one had to walk a mile to get a cup of coffee in the morning. After swimming with the dolphins once (and what a logistical hassle that was), there was not much else that I wanted to do there.

I realize many people like casinos .. and/or want to vacation with their small children whom they can leave at a "kids club" for much of the day ... but I am not one of them.

Maui, on the other hand, was amazing. Especially if you fly out a week early and take time to explore both Maui and some other islands such as Kauai, Oahu and the Big Island.

I decided to check this out. You are partially correct. Obviously, they are not there every year, but UNC does hold the record (so far) for most appearances with 7, while Duke is tied for 2nd place with 6. The others with 6 appearances are Indiana, Kansas, and Michigan. You can see the others with multiple appearances in the table below (sorted by number of appearances).

Fun fact: Syracuse is the only undefeated team in the Maui, with 3 wins in 3 appearances. Duke is a close second with 5 wins in 6 visits (and UNC is 4 out of 7).

NOTE: figures do not include this year's tournament.

In theory (notice that it's in italics, bolded, and underlined), there's supposed to be a rotation so each school gets a chance to play in the preferred tournaments like Maui. Also, supposedly, (again in italics, bolded, and underlined) at the request bordering on demand of the sponsors, the conference gives extra chances to UNC-CHeat and dook to go to Maui, for one, and probably some other preferred tournaments. This year UVa plays at the Mohegan Sun tournament, last year we played at the Atlantis tournament, and the year before that in Brooklyn.

That's pretty cool that we are the only ones to have a perfect record there!

Maybe Boeheim is starting to suspect that "Mr. November" has a pejorative feel to it.

I believe some (most?) of those visits by UNC/Duke happened when the league had 12 or even 9, members, rather than the 15 of the current configuration. Same with Indiana when the B1G had 10 (imagine that!) teams.

It's basically a cost-benefit analysis. I don't think anyone would disagree that Maui is better than the Bahamas. But you can get to the Bahamas in 2 hours direct from any major airport on the East Coast. It's an easy 2-3 day trip. Whereas getting from the East Coast to Maui you're basically looking at a full day of travel, and you have to be there at least a week to make it worth it. Plus Hawaii is sooooooo expensive.

I would say Atlantis is the one place that's at least as expensive as HI, if not more.

I haven't personally been there, but I have heard horror stories about their price gouging for things like food and water.

Yeah it was insane. I have a problem when you have to start packing water and snacks.

I have the same take. Atlantis felt like I just had my wallet out handing money over for EVERYTHING.

Maui was much more relaxing and the gym felt like a college basketball court. Not a large conference center converted into a court.
Def worth taking the flight. Maui was the best college basketball experience I have had.
