McDermott suspended at Creighton

Had he said stay on the reservation not plantation it's no big deal, cancel culture is out in full force, wonder how this made it out of the locker room, his players told him not to resign so I'd assume someone is pissed they aren't playing and is hell bent on getting revenge.
Lemme follow here:

McDermott said something that is at worst racist, and at best extremely ignorant and out of touch.

And because it came to light we can cast aspersions assuming the worst, most selfish motives of others.

That's absurd. And insidious.

No its not absurd or insidious. Its an assumption, a hunch, a guess.
Its more absurd to think that the coach intended his comments to hurt anyone. By all accounts he is extremely well liked and respected by his players, the administration, and entire Creighton community.

Ok let me ask you. Many golf courses are still called Plantation course, some neighborhoods are called the X plantation. I have never heard of the Concentration Camp Pines course. CMON you are really taking this out of context. He apologized is sitting out a game, case closed. If he said concentration camp he would be terminated immediately regardless of makeup of players.
Of course you haven't heard of the "Concentration Camp Pines" because Concentration Camps are discussed they way they should be discussed - understanding their vile and atrocious histories. It should be the same for Plantations - Unfortunately we live in a world where it's ok for a Golf Course to be called Plantation X. And it's even ok to defend it on public forums.

Baffles me.

TBH this is much worse than what JB said to the reporter this week, but because McDermott is supposedly such a nice guy it got less coverage nationally.
It’s way worse.
Which is part of the reason Boeheim should be more careful. The national media don’t like him and won’t give him the benefit of the doubt and sweep it away.
If Jay Bilas wasn’t a hack he would talk about it unprovoked like he did Jalen Johnson stuff.

It doesn’t even make sense .. I’ve never heard this phrase before ... I’ve heard “off the reservation” but that would offend native Americans ..

Then there was the Bob McNair quote of “inmates running the asylum” which is only racist if you in fact have believe black peoples disproportionately populate asylums ..

He's a basketball coach who was fired up and mixed metaphors - and he would've gotten killed for using the proper one as well.

This stuff is nuts. But whatever.

There are different types of plantations that are not slave plantations. There is only one type of concentration camp. It is not an apples to apples comparison.

1 game. Should be the standard for anyone working on campus for this type of incident.

ok i disagree but i dont think you are completely unreasonable. Reasonable minds can disagree. You want a strict liability type of policy. Im a mens rea guy and like to judge intent.

It straight up does not matter.

it does to the analogy he was making but not to the underlying point we are discussing. To be clear, i have never said in this thread that what mcdermott said was ok. I just dont think he intended what he said and that a suspension is unwarranted.

please do not take a subtopic of what was being discussed and try to use it against me to suggest i am arguing a point that i am not

Fair enough.

The bolded is actually the assertion that I was directly stating is fine for an individual to apply to themselves for their own circumstances, but one that is inappropriate to demand another apply to themselves and their circumstances. I actually completely understood your point, I just hugely disagree with the application.

To make another comparison that's relevant to the times... I believe it's hugely valuable in general for people to be conscious of their privileges in life, and self-assess them frequently. I try to do it in my own and for my own life. But I would find it completely inappropriate for me to tell another person to "check their privilege." There's little chance of that doing any good, and it would indicate an embedded judgment on my part that's simply not fair.

When you start your apology with an excuse it’s not much of an apology haha

“I cant have anyone leave the plantation”

what the hell are some of you guys defending here?
in what other context do PEOPLE leave a plantation?

what he said was wrong, he apologized, he didnt get fired. What’s the problem?

Have you been to the Dole Plantation in Maui, it’s a pineapple farm. No slaves have ever worked on the farm. Context is everything.

It's 2021 and we have to have this conversation.

It's amazing.

Of course context is everything.

Now pretend you’re a young black man in 2021. Give it a good try. Please.

Now imagine a white male in a position of authority telling you to “stay in the plantation”.

Are you thinking Maui and Pineapples?

Answer me straight up.

What metaphors did he mix up? I’m genuinely curious. I’ve never heard one about a plantation.
