McDermott suspended at Creighton

It's 2021 and we have to have this conversation.

It's amazing.
Oh, I think we absolutely have to have this conversation, and I don't necessarily see it as a bad thing. The conversation also has to be ongoing, IMO.
Personally I started out having the opinion that the punishment did not fit the crime here, but as I've read through this thread, I've come around to the counter POV.
Stated it earlier that Race, with a capital R, is the 3rd Rail in American society, and part of the reason for that is we just don't talk, and more importantly LISTEN to each other as much as we should.
I'm not Jewish, African-American, Native American or other minority, but I am willing to admit and acknowledge the fact that those who are, have faced blatant and pervasive indignities, both big and small, throughout our history...and continue to do so today.
So, yeah...maybe I didn't quite get the full context of McDermott's mistake at first, and it was a genuine mistake which btw is totally beside the point, but I certainly do now.
It's not a comfortable subject, but we also can't assume that everyone is coming at it from the same place.

it does to the analogy he was making but not to the underlying point we are discussing. To be clear, i have never said in this thread that what mcdermott said was ok. I just dont think he intended what he said and that a suspension is unwarranted.

please do not take a subtopic of what was being discussed and try to use it against me to suggest i am arguing a point that i am not
Agree with this 100%. I also am not debating the word plantation is a correct word but that the apology, penalty are good in this case. Ed Cooley, his players and many African Americans are taking the same position. On a broader level they should force the word out of use as it is today for hotels, golf courses and restaurants. So people understand its a not acceptable.

In his apology, McDermott said that he's never used the plantation analogy before. I dunno, it just seems unlikely to me that someone would suddenly bust out a brand new figure of speech for the very first time at age 56.

What metaphors did he mix up? I’m genuinely curious. I’ve never heard one about a plantation.

Reservation would be my guess, it's how I've heard it. Again something you grow up with not knowing where it came from.

Edit - he grew up in Iowa. Unlikely he ever encountered that word growing up, fwiw.

I wholly concur. Being upset or hurt by words is on the listener
Says the old white lawyer.

Dumbest thing I’ve read on the internet today, but not surprised it comes from this caricature. Just keeping it on brand, huh?

I’m sure you’ve had many racial slurs tossed your way growing up and you just laughed them off. Teach us all how you overcame the struggle.

hearing that he will be resigning from the program.
That is too bad if true. Im sure if he does resign it is with a significant buyout.
