Melo - from the bleachers

Could you add Jabari to this calculation? :)

Carmelo Anthony:
25,551 points in 38,129 minutes, 32.2 per 48 minutes.
He shot 0.482 from two, 0.347 from three and 0.811 from the line, a total of 1.640.
25,551 points - 11,224 missed field goals - 1,375 missed free throws = 12,952.
If Melo had made every one of his 16,436 two point shot attempts, his 3,925 three point shot attempts and his 7,290 free throw attempts, he would have scored 51,937 points, so he scored 49.2% of the points he would have if he'd made every shot.

His averages per 48 minutes:
32.2p 8.7r 4.0a 1.4s 0.7b = +47.0 14.1mfg 1.7mft 3.6to 3.9pf = -23.7 = 23.3NP 16.4OE +6.9DP

Jabari Parker:
3,724 points in 7,341 minutes, 24.3 per 48 minutes.
He shot 0.521 from two, 0.337 from three and 0.739 from the line, a total of 1.597.
3,741 points - 1,557 missed field goals - 196 missed free throws = 1,988. (If he';d played Melo's minutes at this rate, this would be 10,326)
If Jabari had made every one of his 2,552 two point shot attempts, his 505 three point shot attempts and his 750 free throw attempts, he would have scored 7,369 points, so he scored 50.8% of the points he would have if he'd made every shot.

His averages per 48 minutes:
24.3p 9.3r 3.4a 1.4s 0.6b = +39.0 10.1mfg 1.3mft 3.0to 3.3pf = -17.7 = 21.3NP 12.9OE +8.4DP

It's actually an interesting comparison. Parker is a good player and it's not an insult to be compared to him. The biggest difference are that Melo's been around a lot longer and has much greater career totals and has accomplished more things and that he shot the ball more, scored more and missed more shots. Parker is a somewhat better rebounder, Melo is a somewhat better passer but he has a few more turnovers and fouls . Parker may not have peaked but he hasn't suffered through the declining phase of his career yet, so he may or may not main the averages at the same level. I wouldn't mind having either guy on my team.

There's a huge difference between a guy who scores about 32 points per 48 minutes and one who scores about 24 points, especially when the more prolific scorer has been doing it about five times longer. Parker is a nice scorer, but there are plenty of others out there like him.

The most points Jabari has scored in a season was 1,070.

The only seasons Carmelo didn’t top that was 2014-15 when he had knee surgery after 40 games, and this season when he barely played.

He doubled Parker’s best total twice and came close to doubling it 5 other times.

This discussion is one of the most ridiculous things I've seen in while.

Are people seriously comparing Carmelo to a guy who has played five seasons, averaging 15 points in just under 30 minutes per game, while playing fewer than 50 games per season, and who may very well have already peaked?

Parker averaged 20 ppg for half a season once, so he’s basically Carmelo. Lololol.

I would laugh but it's our fan base doing the comparison which makes it all the more painful.

I’m going to go to the Duke board and tell them that they should be talking about how Grant Hill wouldn’t make it in this era because he couldn’t shoot the 3, and how he’d have to hope to be Kyle Anderson at best.

Come on SWC. Melo is going to the Hall of Fame. Jaba is going to the hall of nothing

No kidding "The biggest difference are that Melo's been around a lot longer and has much greater career totals and has accomplished more things and that he shot the ball more, scored more and missed more shots." I was asked to make a comparison and I did.

Yeah that’s fine. I get it. I was more focused on the fact that Jabari is a good player and it’s not an insult to be compared to him. It’s an insult if you’re Melo. Melo was a great player. One of the best of his generation. Jabari couldn’t carry his water. That’s all I’m saying.

I was asked to make a statistical comparison so i focused on the numbers and what they were saying to me.

If they were both in the same game and Melo scored 32 points, pulled down 9 rebounds, passed for 4 assists, made a steal and block, missed 14 field goals and 2 free throws and committed 4 turnovers and fouls while Parker scored 24 points, grabbed 9 rebs, passed for 3 assists, had a steal and a block, missed 10 field goals and 1 free throw and committed 3 turnovers and 3 fouls, who would you say had the better game? I'd pick Melo, too, but i might have to think about it for a moment. Both would have had very strong games. yet that's what they averaged per 48 minutes for their careers.

Uh huh. Jabari's 16-17 before getting hurt was essentially the avg Carmelo season. Can ignore that it was due to Cuse love or whatever but Jabari was the closest replica to Melo I've ever seen. Injuries have cost him a step or 2 and now his ability to score in isolation is no longer elite which means he can't help a team win games while age has done the same to Melo.
How do you figure that? Melo didn't average under 20 until his last two seasons and has a career average of 24, so how is 16-17 pretty much the average Carmelo season? Just because Jabari had a similar looking game and an elite freshman year in college doesn't mean they are the same player. There are tons of elite xollege players that were compared to NBA greats that didn't end up being close. How many "next Jordan" players were there until they got to the league?

He meant the 2016-17 season. Jabari averaged 20 pts. and 6 rebounds for 50 games and got hurt.

20 and 6 were Melo’s worst seasons. Basically his first two years in the league and late career numbers.

He was usually 24-29 ppg in his prime.

That's not what he said though. He specifically mentioned Jabari scoring 16-17 and that was basically Melo's average. What he said is not even close.

I understand. I guess that’s why I am a little wary of using per 48 minutes stats. It seems like it could skew more in favor of lesser used players as it doesn’t account for the toll minutes tank.

A few years back I had someone tell me that Carmelo should shoot less and that the Knicks should get more shots for Tyson Chandler and Pablo Prigioni because of their “efficiency”.

When questioned on “how” you get Tyson Chandler(a guy who only shot layups and dunks) more shots while maintaining the same efficiency, and the same for Prigioni(an old guy who played limited minutes and pretty much only took wide open 3’s), this goofball had no answer. It was just smarmy “sports fan” running his mouth and hot taking about the big name guy.

Funny how the media turned a lot of sheep on Melo, and now the media is all pumping Melo up and people are following the narrative.

Smart people never wavered.

I remember a game where the Knicks crowd was booing Melo, and then he hit a game winner and they were cheering and Melo was shaking his head no and yelling at them “I don’t want it!”. That’s how I feel now.

Lol. Honestly that’s one of the worst posts of all time.

Seeing a lot of isolation 4s that are high level stars as low efficiency, poor defense guys? Who plays that way in the modern NBA and is All-NBA caliber?
