Melo "legacy"

To put it bluntly ... the kid was obviously not a scholar-athlete from the get go.

I think that's true. He was a one-and-done kid that couldn't go pro after last season, and had to come back for another year. Tough deal in a way - can't go pro, not really able to cut it as a student, no real viable option to develop for the NBA outside of college ball.

That said - The opposite of love isn't hate, its apathy. That's how I'll feel about Fab in his future endeavors - uninterested and apathetic.

That bust is forever a part of our the cuse basketball family. That bust like you and me followed his recruitment to cuse hoping he would pick us. That bust came into cuse with over whelming expectations his freshmen year and dissapointed and was crushed by many cuse fans. That bust dedicated himself over the summer to get his ass into shape and become one of the most improved players in the country when he could have easily given up and left.

That bust had some follies along the way, he was our bust and part of our cuse family

Maybe if that bust would have dedicated some time in school, or squaring away his personal life he would be remembered a little bit.

This is a terrible post. I think I need to turn off the board for the night. Worst post of the day

Seriously, though, BRNCUSEFRVCUSE, you need to watch this and take it to heart when it comes to being a fan:

Who will people hate more: Donte Green or Fab?
That is a good question and one I will NEVER be able to understand. DG ended up leaving SU for reasons that were not entirely in his control. People ripped him for his shoot first attitude but he was given free reign in light of the losses of some of the other perimeter shooters.

He constantly returns to SU and openly backs the program. This question should be a no brainer.

Melo was a disappointment on the court last year, an embarassment off of it this year due to the transgressions (alleged) with his girlfriend and academics. The worst thing those is it appears he was given a second and third chance and blew both of them. Very little chance it has a positive effect on this team and his recruitment and spot on the roster likely cost us other prospects who would appreciate the opportunity a lot more.

Really disappointing but I just refuse to get really upset about stuff like this anymore.

I now have absolutely no interest in Noel. He is a young man who has no interest in college and will play one year because he has to. He will have little loyalty to the team or fans. I know I am feeling bitter right now and undoubtedly should not paint Noel with the same broad brush as Fab, but this has burned us. Fab is now going to bring down our GPA or whatever it is that gets us in trouble, and it just seems he is oblivious to the anguish he has caused. Perhaps I am wrong, but I too would like to hear some remorse from Fab. And even then, it will not much mollify me.

Fabricio youre nothing to me now. Youre not a former player, youre not an alum. I dont want to know you or what you do. I dont want to see you on tv playing basketball, I dont want you near the carrier dome. When you visit syracuse, I want to know a day in advance, so I wont be there.

Overreaction. Kid messed up and was already punished. This whole suspension thing is more politics and PR than anything. Don't be a douche.

If Syracuse fans have the nerve to talk down to other fanbases about class, we should look at ourselves first.

I think we have a new winner for the "Biggest Looser" show... it's Fab Melo.

Obviously you have never seen The Godfather...

Just blow off steam, but remember people these kids don't get paid anything but are given a free education to play basketball. If the kids don't want to be students then they shouldn't be playing basketball for Syracuse University. Fab Melo didn't want to be a student and as a result he is no longer enrolled at Syracuse University I wish him all the best in his future endeavors, but he is has zapped my will to watch the tournament atleast for one night. I feel like Ron Burgundy in Anchorman with the long beard in the bar depressed.

Maybe he should return the schollie for the education he didn't get. Pass it on to a deserving someone we can't name, but his initials are N.N.-VBOF

I am willing to bet Syracuse University has profited more than the 90k in free education Fab Melo has gotten in exchange for 2 years of basketball. While I am extremely disappointed in this suspension the venom and hate directed at Fab is not fair. He has screwed up, but in the long run its the coaching staff who extended the offer and Fab accepted. Acceptance is a 2 part street. We fanbase are the ones who are suffering, but I just wish we remembered these kids aren't pro athletes and are used just as much as they are given benefits. I get ticked off Nike is selling #11 Platinum jerseys for $129.99 a pop and Scoop Jardine is getting NOTHING of that when his jersey likeness is being used. I am sure most of the players who make it to the NBA give a little back to Syracuse. Donte Greene has and he only spent 1 year at SU.

Who will people hate more: Donte Green or Fab?

Donte was the name I thought when I read the first post. Of course, Donte finished the season. We all knew he was one and done- or at least knew that's what he thought. Plus, watching Donte was frustrating sometimes with his shot selection. Watching Fab play this year- what's not to like? BUT, this I know- I check Jonny's stats, Wes's, Donte's, Carmelo's, etc. I won't be checking Fabs. I won't wish him ill but I just won't care.

Unfulfilled promise - came in out of shape freshman year which hurt the overall effectiveness of the team. Worked hard to get in shape on the court this year and helped propel us to one of our best seasons ever. However, did not do the job in the classroom which likely ends our possibility of winning it all. The incident with his girlfriend did nothing to enhance his reputation. Letting down his teammates is far worse than anything he has done to the fans. And that is something he can never make up for. The players will always ask themselves what could have been.

I do not wish him ill-will. He did likely have it tougher academically coming from Brazil. However, he had the help here to succeed if he wanted to.

Ultimately, he is a player who will not be welcomed back in Syracuse. Simple as that. That's not being mean - it's just the reality of the situation created by Fab's own actions or inaction.

Time to move on for him and for us.

I'm not sure what his legacy will be, but I find it rather fitting that one of the last moments anyone will remember of him playing will be of that stupid shot he took in the final minutes of the UConn game.

If he had actually done anything in the Cincinnati game, he might have changed those memories.

These are kids. This whole hating somebody is pretty childish. I am disappointed, but hate is a strong word. Why would you hate Donte? Is it because he made a career choice that you didn't agree with?

Donte Greene is a good kid and deserves a lot better than what people here say about him. I know for a fact that he really, really regrets leaving early and he admits it was a mistake. Despite all that he comes back and professes his love for 'Cuse whenever he can. Him and Fab aren't on the same planet right now.

Fab set the Syracuse single-game record for blocks, bumping one of the true credits to the university and basketball program - Etan Thomas - to second place. Not sure about his legacy, but right now that fact strikes me as unfortunate.

Don't worry, Noel will break that record next year.

You have me wrong my man. I don't hate Donte one bit. I remember watching him play and I loved his game. I still keep up with his stats in the NBA. I think people give Donte such a bad wrap at SU. They couldn't understand that his reasons for leaving were very different than a lot of people. I posed the question because of so many people's reaction to Donte leaving seem similar to the bad luck Fab has brought upon this team. I could never hate a college student. I work in that field. People make mistakes, hopefully they learn from it and don't make the same one in the future.

I cannot understand why anyone "hates" Green. decent kid, took some bad advice.

Because he played the whole prima donna thing, holding a press conference and printing GD t-shirts about will he or won't he go. We were an NIT team. He flashed the whole Dynasty symbol all year long, and then he bailed before the even MADE the NCAA tournament. That is why some people don't like him.

Ok. Hate a kid for that. Wow.
