Message From the Moten Family

Their goal is to raise $233,400:

"We chose the goal of $233,400 because that number holds deep meaning for our family. It represents the 2,334 points our father scored as Syracuse’s all-time leading scorer a record he still holds today.

But to us, it’s more than a stat.

Every one of those points was earned with heart, hustle, and love for the game. He poured his soul into every bucket not for personal glory, but to bring joy to fans, to represent Syracuse with pride, and to lift up the people around him.

That number tells a story. It’s a symbol of the legacy he left behind — and now, it’s the number we’re using to help carry that legacy forward.

He gave so much of himself to others — and even now, we want to continue that spirit on his behalf.

We’re raising funds to help us carry out his final wishes and continue the spirit of giving that defined his life — especially through his passions for sports, education, and uplifting the community he loved so deeply

Thank you for being part of his story — and now, ours."

With love and gratitude,
Lawrencia & Leilani

I have no idea which is why I have no intention of making a contribution.
If it was to set up a memorial scholarship, I would give a few bucks.
But just to vaguely honor dad, I don't think so.
I was confused by the vagueness also. I'm kind of glad others felt the same way actually and it wasn't just me.

It does feel a little odd, but it really depends on how you look at it. For all of the love that the fanbase has for him, it would be nice to help take care of his family, especially since he died young enough that his family is certainly missing his income. Also, grieving is very painful. Financial issues on top of that is just the twist of the knife. I see it as the equivalent of bringing a family a meal while grieving.

Again, if this $233,000 was for funeral expenses, family living expenses, that is something I would consider helping. But that is not what it sounds like.
They are literally saying give us this money so we can honor our Dad.

Not to be rude, but if they are serious in raising a large amount of money for Dad's legacy, they have to give the fan base a little information.

Is it for scholarships, basketballs for the disadvantaged, building a basketball court, a Lawrence Moten statue, supporting kids basketball teams, commissioning a Lawrence Moten painting, helping kids in inner city Syracuse?

I think people would happily contribute if they had the slightest notion what it was being spent on.

Lawrence Moten meant a great deal to this fanbase and this community. I think we would all like to help honor him - we just need to have some idea of what they have in mind.

I know someone who is constantly grubbing for money on facebook: "waffles", various schemes of Super Bowl squares where he keeps part of the money, etc.

Sadly, his mother died. In the obituary it said, no joke, "memorial contributions can be made to" and then his venmo. He also posted the obituary on facebook, and mentioned the contribution/venmo thing in his comments.
