Miami Postgame

I think the reason they don't want to fire him now is because it serves no real purpose. Do you see an ass't on the staff that you think, now there is an improvement? We have 11 games left plus the ACC tournament game. The time will pass fast enough.
With all due respect, who gives a toss? Make a statement. That could be a reason, but it would be a bad one.

Well, we thought these guys had some heart.
I’m never going to question someone‘s heart. When we were down 7-0, i thought it was going to be a 20+ blowout. We started horribly and then made it a game for a while. We just don’t have the tools to have sustained that middle section. Thats on the staff.

We have some players who are more capable than they are demonstrating, but they’re operating within such a flawed ‘structure’ that it compromises both personal and team performance. We need an actual offensive scheme to facilitate efficiency and good shots. Until then, we will continue to make the game more difficult and take difficult, ‘brainless’ shots, just because the ball has to go up at some point.

JW said meaningful game in March
We're not even getting meaningful games in January.
After BC loss I figured .500 in conference record at best. After 2 more home losses I don't think they are gonna be .500 overall
I thought for a little bit that we were on track to be a bubble team and we’d all be wondering if the games we were playing in March met the “meaningful games in March” criteria.

Don’t have to worry about that now.

Embarrassing. 5 years. How could this be possible? People worried about losing this guy or that guy next year…rip off the band aid and wake me up when we are a tournament team with a head coach that helps boys become men and fight for the ball and die to win.

We won 4 games without him. Seems to be a good person.
I feel sorry for 2 people Red because he attached his coaching career to JJ being a star, and it failed miserably. And his career as a division 1 Head Coach is probably finished. I also feel sorry for JJ good person who came home hoping be be a star. Don't know how bad things were at Notre Dame, but was not the player Red and the fans expected.
Also feel sorry for the team and coaches, this wasn't what they expected.
You don’t feel sorry for us?

Red should have never been hired. They made crossing JB sound like we’d unleash the kraken, but that was obviously a boogeyman relative to where we are now.

JJ should have never been treated like he has been. It’s what it is.

There are still people that would deny either of those items. But it’s at least less and less people.

ok . so you loved gerry as a player . as we all loved red. question is are you ready to turn on him as a coach when we don't win ? cuz that will happen.
It is too soon for Gerry to come back.
He should stay at Siena, make some NCAA tournament appearances and then decide what to do. Probably best he have success elsewhere as well.
Most fans are too pissed off over the last 3 years to give him any real chance to succeed now,
I don’t blame them, these past 2 years have been crap.
And I think it would break his heart to have so many fans turn on him.
He loves SU.
And the fans love him now.

And whoever takes over will have a hard time getting this team to the NCAA tournament and winning back the fans.
I don’t think this frankly will be that attractive of a job after the last 5 years of play.
And I doubt we will pull out the checkbook

Some of us loved red.
Others forgot about him, until recently.
I can’t honestly say I ever loved Red.
I appreciated what he did.
There are a few players that I genuinely loved - Melo, Sherman Douglas, Derrick Coleman, Dion Waiters, but none more than Gerry.
I always felt he loved SU as much as we did.
He kind of was the Everyman star - he gave it all on the court
I will never forget how he played his heart out on an injured leg to win the Big East tournament his senior year.
If only this team had Gerry’s heart!

Gerry was great

I'll abstract Gmac from this and his potential success, but I think just the fact that another "in house" person was brought in would drive me an enough SU fans nuts. Got to go outside the family for this next hire.

Is it more embarrassing to be fired midseason, or to listen to the student section cheering for you to be fired at remaining home games?

I don’t think firing a guy midseason accomplishes much - but allowing him to coach the rest of year while he gets booed and jeered at is like waterboarding the poor guy. I’m ok with it since it feels like an appropriate punishment for his incompetence at coaching - but if I was Red I would celebrate being let go tomorrow. I still get paid, but can do it from my couch for a while - not a bad deal.
There's like 4 more home games and if you think more than a few dozen people are showing up to watch us play ND, Cal, and Pitt you are mistaken.

6 weeks left, judging by the # of insiders that are silent I'm quite sure the search has already began.

The obvious downside to NIL and the portal from a player's perspective is they no longer are insulated from fan/media criticism as they were as a "student/athlete". They are still young and developing their talent, but being paid puts them in a totally different situation. This hybrid system of paid amateurism is a complete disaster.

Before that he said it’s not the coaching to blame. I’d argue JJ and the coaching are both to blame, along with some other things.
This is the true indictment of Red and staff imo. How many players have gotten better over 3 years? Jj is not a bad player but he has a certain skill set that they don’t gameplan for. And over 3 years his skill set has diminished not increased. Just look at the guys that have become worse at shooting…it’s crazy. The hitches for JJ and Kyle are getting worse not better and these are fixable things!

He's young and his choice of words probably wasn't the best. I doubt anyone, even the hardcore Red antagonists, are questioning his "character". It's a question of Red's coaching abilities. To another extent, he has to realize the players are also being critiqued even if it's more subtle and indirect. But again, it's not their "character", but their performance on the court.

Whether or not expectations were too much and fan reaction too severe is debatable. Personally, I thought they were an average ACC team on paper and would be in the mix with several teams to make the tournament. Winning a few of those close losses would have put them in that situation, but for a variety of reasons it didn't happen.

Red will go and players will leave. We'll see what changes next year, and how long the fan base will give the new group to meet their expectations.
