Michael Malone: Next UNC Head Coach

Yeah, I can't see him having the patience required for kids. Everything I've heard over the years, he didn't have patience with the players he had in the league. Yes he won it all there, but I can't see this working long term in college

I don't know. He hasn't coached in the college level since 2000. If anyone was curious if Donovan could be successful returning to the college game with his resume, I'm not sure how anyone is excited about this hire. The UNC people I know thought they would pull a bigger name. I'm not surprised I think the job is overhyped. I will be interested what his contract is.

Seems like the same playbook as hiring Belichick for their football program. Have we seen anything about how old Bill has been relating to the kids and the NIL era?

This is interesting. Feels like a giant delta in approach and 'big idea' with this versus what we did. Not saying which will see better results, and given our current 'stations,' we won't know how to correlate them, but... it's interesting.

I think Belichick at age 73 is washed. Malone is 54

I might be in the minority that I think this is a strong hire. Took over a crap Nuggets team and was there for a decade, which is unheard of.

UNC has the pride and re$ource$ to pony up big for a great, college experienced staff, and of course, NIL.

You're definitely the minority. UNC is not UNC anymore. NIL has killed the luster of brand name programs and put 10x as much fan pressure on coaching performances which creates a negative feedback loop. Malone wore out his welcome with a locker room that revolted against him. Before NIL that wouldn't be an issue in college. Now there is very little difference between NBA and college coaching dynamics. If Malone was as good as everyone says he would have had 0 issue getting another NBA job this year.

Hates young players. Rides starters. Doesn’t play his bench. All the reasons he got fired. He is Thibs who happened to coach Jokic.

UNC is absolutely still UNC.

They were in that title game this decade. They beat Duke and got hit when one of the top ten players in college got hurt.

The Hubert Davis drop off is nowhere near as low as the Autry/latter Boeheim drop off. And I think we will be playing in the second weekend of the tournament sooner than later.

They're definitely not still UNC. The only brand name team that is still using the brand to full effect is Duke, and that's mainly because they are backed by private equity.

Agreed. The blue bloods are overrated in the age of NIL. Kentucky and Indiana have tried to spend their way out of mediocrity and it hasn’t worked. You need to build a culture.
