Michael Malone: Next UNC Head Coach

Yeah, I can't see him having the patience required for kids. Everything I've heard over the years, he didn't have patience with the players he had in the league. Yes he won it all there, but I can't see this working long term in college

I don't know. He hasn't coached in the college level since 2000. If anyone was curious if Donovan could be successful returning to the college game with his resume, I'm not sure how anyone is excited about this hire. The UNC people I know thought they would pull a bigger name. I'm not surprised I think the job is overhyped. I will be interested what his contract is.

Seems like the same playbook as hiring Belichick for their football program. Have we seen anything about how old Bill has been relating to the kids and the NIL era?

This is interesting. Feels like a giant delta in approach and 'big idea' with this versus what we did. Not saying which will see better results, and given our current 'stations,' we won't know how to correlate them, but... it's interesting.

I think Belichick at age 73 is washed. Malone is 54

I might be in the minority that I think this is a strong hire. Took over a crap Nuggets team and was there for a decade, which is unheard of.

UNC has the pride and re$ource$ to pony up big for a great, college experienced staff, and of course, NIL.

You're definitely the minority. UNC is not UNC anymore. NIL has killed the luster of brand name programs and put 10x as much fan pressure on coaching performances which creates a negative feedback loop. Malone wore out his welcome with a locker room that revolted against him. Before NIL that wouldn't be an issue in college. Now there is very little difference between NBA and college coaching dynamics. If Malone was as good as everyone says he would have had 0 issue getting another NBA job this year.

Hates young players. Rides starters. Doesn’t play his bench. All the reasons he got fired. He is Thibs who happened to coach Jokic.

UNC is absolutely still UNC.

They were in that title game this decade. They beat Duke and got hit when one of the top ten players in college got hurt.

The Hubert Davis drop off is nowhere near as low as the Autry/latter Boeheim drop off. And I think we will be playing in the second weekend of the tournament sooner than later.

They're definitely not still UNC. The only brand name team that is still using the brand to full effect is Duke, and that's mainly because they are backed by private equity.

Agreed. The blue bloods are overrated in the age of NIL. Kentucky and Indiana have tried to spend their way out of mediocrity and it hasn’t worked. You need to build a culture.

UNC will be the fine they have plenty of money. Top 5 job easily
The BIG problem has been that 'family' thing. I think Dean Smith concocted it so that people would have an even easier time forgetting Frank McGuire (who had never even been near Chapel Hill until he got hired.) And then family would mean all the people who came from Dean. Dean would be THE father, and his family would rule forever as God ordained from before the foundation of the world.

Dean's summer retirement and the flailing of Guthridge showed growing problems with the concept of Family only. That was magnified when Roy stayed at KU, leaving Doherty as the only choice, because Larry Brown was dirty and Dean always thought George Karl far too brash, and Dean's Favorite, Phil Ford, had a little bottle problem. Then Dean made it all MUCH worse by forgetting (it was not public at the time that dean was already in dementia) that he had give his OK to Doherty bringing his entire ND staff with him, therefore having no former UNC players as assistants. Dean then publicly verbally attacked Doherty for turning hugs back on the Family, and as I predicted then, it was over for Doherty no matter what he might do.

He got canned because he hasn’t kept up with Duke since Scheyer took over for K. The only reason.
Looking like the proverbial deer in the headlights over and over in big games lost after having a big lead was the main issue.

Joker averaged 10 ppg his first year. He's at 27ppg now. He got gradually better under Malone
When he was out of shape. His IQ was always there. Not saying I don't give Malone some credit, but Joker would've been an elite player still

He never made a huge year to year jump in production. He got gradually better. I just dont think you can knock him on that when every other coach needs a great player to win.

Yes, he also gradually got in better shape and grew his game from his rookie year, not unheard of. He also didn't play a lot of minutes in his rookie year compared to subsequent years. The talent and IQ were always there, and Malone wasn't some make or break factor
