Minnesota hiring Nick Monroe

Yes I should’ve done better job clarifying - losing players that aren’t DQ’d/graduate/ drafted. Meaning they just decide to go somewhere else. Obviously this only really applies to portal era.

I was trying to observe how we got double whammied by portal/ NIL on top of an exodus of our top 3 coaches under HC.
Gotcha. Yeah it’s a bummer. All we can hope is that when the dust settles every year we’re better off on a net basis.

Read the interview with Nick closely. Focus on his answer about being passed over for the DC position at SU.
His answer, non direct but with huge lines is indicative that being passed over was definitely a major part of his decision. Im not saying he still doesn’t leave BUT. If he would have been named DC at SU he would be making 800k or so. In addition he would have the title of DC .
Instead he was left with an assistant title, less money, and not even
The title of Co-dc.
My two cents. IF he had been elevated at the same time, PRE bowl game as our DC Minnesota doesn’t even offer him as there is no way or almost no way He leaves a DC title at SU for a CO DC title at Minneapolis. Especially since the DC is a young guy who isnt leaving soon.
If you follow a natural coaching progression the only way Nick becomes a DC and stays in Minneapolis is if his friend takes another job.
Otherwise Nick will have to move away from Minnesota in order to take a DC job.

I firmly believe Nick stays if he had been named DC prior to the bowl game.

Remember when you thought the hiring of Long was Dino’s best work and an exceptional decision?

Respectfully, whose game plan was used in the bowl game? Was it Rocky's game plan implemented by Monroe or was it Monroe's plan?

White did not show the innovation in the second half of the season to that was shown in the bowl game. This leads me to think that Monroe either had no influence on White or that Rocky influenced the bowl game plan. Either way, Monroe was not quite ready for the DC responsibilities. Could SU have given Monroe the Co-DC title and money, possibly, that is another discussion.

As you are as close to an "insider" as most posters on this site will ever be, what are you hearing from your connections?

Of course, I do, and I still think he is a fantastic hire. This isn't about Long it's about Nick. The point isn't if long was a good hire as he is a fabulous hire. My point is that by hiring Long it opened the door for Nick to leave because if he had been named DC prior to the bowl game. If he had been elevated to the DC position at the same time Beck was elevated, he would have most likely stayed. Time will tell if the trade of long for Nick was a plus.

It’s also possible he still would’ve left anyway. Hindsight is 20/20.

Even if he had been offered by Dino, he still would have moved on to Minnesota. Again White made a base of $640k. Additional consideration per an article moved it to $705k. Minnesota as stated is paying Rossi who Monroe apparently has a friendship with $1.1 mill and goes to $1.2 for 2025. Monroe as Co DC in Big 10 will make more than DC at Syracuse. Add the facts Minnesota is very secure coaching situation, Nick's dad coached there, his family is there and as his folks are older he will be there for them. There is no way Swag was staying at Syracuse, none. It was not a trade off.

I believe getting Long is a bigger gain than Monroe leaving is a loss.
No idea if Monroe was ready to be a DC. But the guy who has worked with him everyday for the last 10+ seasons didn’t seem to think so.
One of the next two hires must be a good recruiter. Monroe had received multiple raises so the funds are there.

That position at Minnesota opened up Jan 4th when Haynes left for Wisconsin. Minny came with an offer that allowed Nick to come back home. That was the biggest reason. That's what he wanted to do. The extra money and title was a bonus.

Yup, I love Monroe but I rather have the proven DC and just hope we can add some good recruiters.

Agreed and Long is a young man for his age. I hope that we fill the open positions with coaches that have strong connections to our core recruiting territories.

Obviously Monroe was cultivating a job with Minnesota for a while. He communicated with his friend on the staff weekly. Another thing: don't be surprised if his wife was an influence. Being a coach's wife is like being an Army wife. If ever a chance comes up to get stationed near home, you're taking it.

Hes been talking to his coaching friend for his whole career.

MN D coordinator Joe Rossi has done a great job and will be likely moving on for a HC job or SEC D coordinator job (yes even B1G schools get coaches pooched) in the future.

Nick can gain experience at a B1G school so he is more ready when his time comes. He could have been promised the future D coordinator job with his home town team which could be the biggest factor for him leaving.

Only decent recruiter on a very poor recruiting staff. This saddens me.

I wonder if the Minnesota truck shows up in his neighborhood.
He lives in my neighborhood - Ill keep you posted. Also Dino has worked with him for several years. and passed him over for DC. Perhaps - Dino knows that isn't his forte. Not that he doesn't want or deserve a chance from someone.

If you had an employee that worked with you (hard working) for 10 years and had a store manager position open (for instance) and knew he wasn't a fit, unless you thought you could close knowledge gaps. You wouldn't just give him a shot because - loyalty or whatever.

Eh - bit unfair. I think people still think we should be recruiting like we did in the 80s and 90s and measure our staff by that and haven't factored in reality. Losing Monroe hurts in both reads just think this staff isn't so bad. Recruiting in the NE is just hard.

The guy left. Honestly, who really cares why except to make people feel better. Doesn’t matter and you can only go by what he said. What’s the point of the continuous speculation.
Yeah I agree, we just need to move on now. No point in even focusing on him or why etc any further.
