MLB 2022 Lockout

“Cancelled” if that was the actual word used, implies they would not be rescheduled.

They will NOT be rescheduled. Some of them are interleague games and it's too complicated.

Screw the players and screw the owners

The players could do more for the minor leaguers and newer guys

The owners could offer more

I have zero sympathy from a pay perspective for professionals.

The top guys could help out by agreeing to a cap

The owners could at least agree in principle to raise the minimum and contribute to a players retirement fund

Put a cap on how much profit a team owner can make per year. Anything over that amount gets penalized and given to the players.
And make sure to include revenues from their surrounding businesses and tv networks.

Revenue is over hyped

You can have $43b in revenue and $45b in expenses

EBITDA is more valuable tool

Players aren't paying staffs, field operations, coaches, vendors, travel, and they receive meal stipends.

They are paying a fraction of dues and insurance, health benefits, retirement, etc

Too bad owners don't open the books

I know a professional player making minimum... He's still way ahead of the average ticket buyer, even after all the deductions.

A team might make $50 million a year after everything is said and done. Might make $100mil.

In the grand scheme of a major corporation, that is not a lot. And the timing is not in either parties favor with inflation at what it's at.

Also, NBA players are gonna screw themselves when they're up for negotiation. People are already not thrilled that the highest paid guys pick and choose when they play.

Take Toronto

Avg 10k home attendance times 82 games = 820000*$50 = $41m in tickets in 2021

Payroll in 2021 is $133m for players.

starting in 2022 every MLB team will receive a guaranteed $60.1 million via national TV deals (averaging out the money from the life of those deals). Likely every local tv deal averages >$40m per year. So every single team is getting $100m+ guaranteed before selling a ticket.Feb 12, 2022

So you are at a $9m surplus for Toronto after tickets and TV. Other revenue probably adds another $31m

So your at $40m

Now you have to pay staff, insurance, vendors, taxes, minor leagues, dues, travel

Its not like these guys are making $100+m after all told. Most franchises probably just break even or slightly above.

They keep ownership because they know people will spend a billion dollars to own the right franchise.

They have my sympathies. It’s a shame that these poor billionaires are exploited by those greedy millionaires.

you have oil companies with profits in the billions and gas prices dont adjust and at best you have a few teams making pretty good bucks. if the top 5 make 200 million profit and the bottom ones make 10 million you could see why some teams dont want to change the status quo..

If only MLB teams had to open their books.

Oh wait the Braves did.

They turned a major profit.
6 million dollars profit per game and they don’t even have a diehard fanbase each game.

Are you kidding? They have been consistent winners for thirty years!

They have a huge fanbase

They were second in average home attendance at 29490 a game
