More on strickland

What's even the point in blaming him? His offensive line does him no favors. You would have to be some kind of special to carve out 4+ ypg with this line at this point in the year.

The line could really use a Deleone Carter.

If we had Hines from NC State, we'd be 5-0 right now. The OL is young and not quite where Dino wants it - but the lack of RB is killing us. I like Strickland, just want to see him play at another position...

Can he just have the "Doug Hogue talk" with Dino? He's not gonna play on Sunday at running back. He was more highly rated as a cornerback coming out of high school. Even in the H-back he showed more natural instincts, talent., and speed. His pass blocking is not getting him to the NFL.

While Strickland isn't tearing it up let's not act like this oline is doing anyone any favors...and don't reference "that one play" where if he had just gone right there was a hole...the point is he is running to where he is supposed to and when he gets there his oline has been pushed backwards...neither rb or oline have done their jobs...our line is ok at pass protection but they are weak at run blocking...the stat millhouse calls out is an indictment on both positions...Go Cuse!

I think there has been enough analysis and actual game stills here (thanks, upperdeck) to say that our RB's do not have canonical RB instincts.

Pierre has looked more like a RB in his very limited action this year. IMO. And I'm not one to quibble with DFB, but if it is true that he has been in the doghouse since he fumbled, well... I don't think that instant punishment is a great way to coach kids up. Fear of making one mistake leads to paralysis. Whatever happened to, "We're going to make mistakes, but we'll make them so fast we will recover."

IMO I want Pierre to start immediately. Fumbles and all.

Could it be that perhaps Pierre isn't quite ready overall?

In what sense? Line calls and protection? If that's the case, then we had damn well better find a stud JUCO or grad transfer ASAP, for next year. Pierre may be ready by then, but the incoming frosh won't.

Maybe not ready in the sense that he gets his shot and immediately coughs up the ball.

I mean, there's a possibility here that Pierre is a player that needs time to develop, and the guys coming in next year are ready. For their warts (and they have them) Strickland and Neal can handle a pass out of the backfield. Maybe going to the ground just isn't going to be successful right now and that's the best we've got.

I think we do need an infusion of talent. I think it is coming.

yes there have been some holes missed.. but when the hole appears 1 out of every 7-10 runs I dont think the Rbs are really the problem.. In watching the run blocking there is a failure almost every play by someone.. When Babers says they are young you can see that by how often they get pushed back,, just not strong enough.. the fact we try cut blocks and dont just block them points to issues as well. Other times you can tell they are not a unit you end up with guys not getting blocked because they hand off to the next guy who isnt ready for it.

I think they are getting better, but playing against better dlines isnt going to show that.

FSU had 104 yds rushing against nc st and I dont think RB skill is their issue, SCar had 31. Marshall had 101. We were not alone is struggling against the NC st D. The fact that we threw 55 times with very little pressure is something to hope is a continued good sign

There's more that goes into it than just making the calls. The expectation that a true frosh is game ready after a fall camp is unrealistic in the extreme. It takes time to adapt to the speed of the game, acquire the strength, and develop good technique as a matter of habit. Learning the system is one thing, but making correct decisions under fire is another thing entirely. Realistically it takes hundreds of reps before it becomes second nature and can be executed in a game with a high probability of success.

I couldn't agree more about our running backs. There have been holes open, but their vision is not there nor are they hitting holes fast enough. They appear to hesitate. One thing that frustrates me is how quick our RBs will drop 2 feet on the ground completely stopping their momentum and giving an extra second for the defense to make a play. While I agree the o line is less than stellar, a decent RB should be able to make some gains.

yes so this coupled with a running back who has no moves and no vision equals our rushing results.

I long for Paul Chiara. No, not really but I'd love an Ant Bailey or even Tyson Gulley right now. They need to move Strickland, either split him out or make him a safety.

The running game is broken. We should be thrilled because the offense isn't broken along with it, like we see at other places.

It was clear on Saturday that they're just throwing everything at the wall at this point. More Elmore in one back, several shovel passes.

They will get this figured out, but at this point I'm guessing it won't be this year. When they do... (and cleanup the easy stuff, like 5 men in the backfield).. look out.

Wouldn't mind next season seeing Strickland play ILB like Hogue did several years ago for it may rejuvenate a disappointing career at RB.

I'd say it's 70% on Strickland with poor vision in traffic and no ability to make yards after contact. The other 30% is the line's ineffectiveness. Put Delone Carter back there and we're looking at 4-1.

He hits the hole way too slow for my tastes and lacks vision too top it off. How many times did State burn us with cutbacks? 5, 10?

Those runs are there, they have to be taken advantage of. Once that happens, you force the backside end to stay home and not crash down the line of scrimmage like we are seeing now.

His lack of quickness is the issue more than anything.. Even if you can see the hole you still need to make that cut and get there.. he is a straight line one move guy and many of the holes we see require a quick jump cut.. if its not his skill set trying to make that cut will lose yards instead of grinding for 1-2..

I dont think we have lost hope yet for the Fr to see some playing time.. but with this schedule its hard to get him on the field.. We dont know maybe he fumbles all the time in practice too trying too hard.

Watching that NC State RB play, specifically on that one TD drive where they never threw the ball, was a bit painful from an SU perspective. That RB was everything we want and need.

yeah, there is a bright side, they can gain 450 pretty easily with no running game and a good but not great QB

their running backs look like lightning compared to ours. it's like our guys just expect to go down after 3 yards
