Pretty simple folks until we are above at point guard we will struggle over the course of a season.

Shooting is nice, spacing occurs from good point guard.

Our best teams have had PG.
Since Ennis 2013-2014
Michael Gbinije covered the hole.
K_d__y R__hm__d had potential but left.

It shouldn’t be hard to find another John Gillon in the transfer portal if we lose Mintz.

Riding the freshman next year is a really really really really really really bad idea as it is gambling when we shouldn’t be in gamble mode.

Yes, especially with a coach that will retire soon. How soon doesn't matter because perception is fact when other schools recruit the players we want. We need an experienced PG from the portal to get the most out of Jesse, Joe and maybe Cole . If all three stay we will score.

Yep. I mean you saw what happens when a capable back up true pg runs the offense for almost a whole game vs Duke, and without two major offensive weapons in the lineup. That not even being starting quality.

Agreed! 5-Star Benny Williams comes on board and struggles to adjust. Yet we expect freshmen who aren’t 5 Star to come in and be immediately effective. They all have to learn the zone in short order. Crazy.

Why not roll with Sy then?

Its been an issue since Joe was forced to play the point. Kid has done ok but you don't take a poodle pheasant hunting. He need to play off the ball. Hopefully Sy continues to play like he did at year end. I actually expect great things out of him next season. If we cant land a stud at PG we need to find a good bench guy to give Cope time to learn although i really like his upside.

Without a true Point its pretty difficult to win

I'm not sure we can portal someone better than 5th year Symir. Would be nice to have another option though.

One of the problems with JB's 2-3 zone is offensively. It prohibits us from playing a 3rd guard and ball handler which lots of college teams do these days.

I beg to differ.

We've had guys like KrisJo, CJ, Silent G (prior to becoming PG), Mali, and Eli playing what effectively was the 3rd guard for us.

And Marek handled like a guard very often for us too.

I will never understand this. The zone is not complex. Learning the zone is an extreme overreaction. The only thing somewhat dif to learn from the get-go is that the wings bump up when the ball is on their side. And I guess now, the center covers the corner 3. Everything else is a simple zone with a tweak here and there depending on who we are playing and how the game is going

I don’t dispute what your saying but I believe it has to become instinctive and you can not hesitate at all or you’re late.

sure, but always felt Jim overplayed this to make it seem like it’s more complex than it is

Because he is very limited to what he can do. And we should be able to do better. There is a reason he didn't play at Marq. I like him. He can be a very valuable sub. Symir doesn't start on a good team.
Agreed, though I don't think any of the players currently in the portal are the answer either. Still plenty of time for that to change though.

It’s a lot more complex than that. The most difficult part is probably the rotations based upon where the ball and opposing players are. The reaction to rotate has to be instinctual and quick. And covering the corner 3 isn’t something new.

Before this yr, when did the Center cover the corner 3?

Forever and a day.

Just search corner three or 3 and there's a ton of complaint posts. This is from 2013:
How many times have you seen BMK taken out the game for flying out to challenge a corner 3? Now compare that to the number of times we have seen Rak taken out of the game for failing to get out on a corner 3?

The limiting factor in his game would be his outside shooting. Passing, running the offense and D are as good as any other player could be. I think he can get his outside and 3 point percentages up to a acceptable level. To get a guy who can do everything at a high level would be very difficult.

If JB wants to ride the current freshmen/roster -fine.
Take that roster to the NCAAT and a Sweet 16, and JB proves he's still the Master.
Take that roster to a second consecutive losing record, and JB has a defense for that.
JB win/win.

No. It wouldn't. It would be much more difficult for a guy that can't shoot to get his % up to a acceptable level. And we will see that when his man is allowed to help double our other guys. Like I said, I like Symir. He isn't a starter on a good team. There are plenty of guys out there than would be a big step up. we are just so starved for real pt guard play that when we glimpse it, we are so taken, we think we have struck gold. It happened last year with Kadary. There are guys in the portal that can really help us.

Before this yr, when did the Center cover the corner 3?

Going back as far as Rak, maybe further. In another thread months ago pictures were posted of Rak doing it.

If they did it back then, it was far and few between what we do now. There’s just no benefit. Ok, maybe a few blocks here and there. But more often than not it’s a foul or a missed 3. Well, used to be a missed 3.

Can’t remember how much we’ve done it every year. But our centers today don’t do it every corner 3 either. It depends on the rotation and where the ball is coming from.
