Most underrated player of the 90's

Ryan Blackwell...solid player, almost never gets talked about.

If he played against Notre Dame every game we'd be talking about him, solid player, but seemed to really love playing those guys.

No particular order

Dave Johnson
Preston Shumpert
Etan Thomas (absolute nightmare to get a shot off on in the paint, ask Uconn)

shump was a soph. in the 1999/2000 season, so I consider him more a 2000's player

Otis Hill, Etan Thomas or Dave Johnson work for me ... Burgan was a complete douche bag ... he used to stop down in the dorms I lived in and caused trouble. When he was suspended for 8 games it should have been for the season .. I remember strolling through Manley and seeing Jimmy B walking through the building blowing his stack to one of his assistants about the incident ... used a few words that aren't fit for print here. I bumped into Burgan a few times while on the hill ... he was a senior when I was a frosh ... top notch jerk is what he was not underrated.

I love Griffin. Agree he is tremendously underrated. His performance against the Redmen at MSG in 2001 was epic. But 00-01 was far and away his most impactful season, so I can't in good faith go with him.

Burgan was 90's kris joseph...

But a much worse finisher in transition. Burgan was good for a lot of missed layups on the break.

Good comparison otherwise. Guys who didn't play with an intensity that matched their physical gifts.

John Wallace. Not only was he a flipping machine his SR year, but his decision to stay with SU through probation was absolutely critical to the overall health of the program. Not only did we continue to win, but his career culminated in a FF appearance.

Without him, I'm not sure jb survives.

Yes. Wallace is very highly regarded and yet still underrated. He saved the program.

Also underrated:

Otis;
Dave Johnson;
Reafsnyder (way more capable than most give him credit for);
Luke Jackson

Was anyone else NEVER comfortable, watching Jason Hart? I just always felt like some crazy turnover/odd play was hanging in the balance when he was running the offense. I know we were fairly good in that stretch, but I never felt real comfortable during his years. Always loved his defense though.

Yeah. I feel bad - he's a good guy, and some of us regarded him too harshly. His effort was great, but he was a mediocre finisher and often seemed to be a bricked 19-footer with 30 on the shot clock waiting to happen.

As the talent around him improved, though, he turned into a good point guard. He's a winner and a good Syracuse guy. Glad things worked out well for him.

Any time you are talking about the 90's - the Meadowlands, Kentucky and Pitino must come to mind. With just John Wallace and a bunch of guys we got to the championship game against the #1 seed. Had Lazarous Sims not injured his wrist during the game, we probably win.
Gotlieb responds:
"Meh, since they lost it meant nothing. Only great coaches will win games like that. Very good coaches don't...or something".

Answered at sixth page with Lucious Jackson. #34 and #5

Didn't bother to read thread, but that's my answer.

This stems from a discussion was having last night with a few other Syracuse alums. We all know what Moten did for the program, and how Wallace was the centerpiece of the FF team...but who were the quiet, under the radar guys without whom the team would not have accomplished what it did?

While a case by others was made for Elvir Ovcina, my own argument was for Lazarus Sims. Quiet confident team general, may be the most cerebral PG I have seen at Syracuse since I have been following the program. Made others better.

What say ye, fellow Orange faithful?
easily, donovan mc nabb; one of thr best players to ever matriculate at su

If talking about a single season... Z. End of story. Just an over-achieving, under rated team in general.
