Move Rex

I thought he looked good. He showed some good instincts and natural play making ability. I wonder if may have been able to work his way into the back up role had we had a normal off season.
Glad they force fed him. Move Rex back to TE and emergency QB for the youth movement

You know Rex's injury probably forced their hand, right? I would expect Morgan to be #2 next year after having a full spring and summer to learn the offense. Who knows, maybe if we had a normal off season, he would have been this year. Our offensive coordinator came into what ended up being a funky preseason not even familiar with his own personnel, having lost the spring. It made total sense that he would go with the two veterans that he at least knew had experience in the offense.

Stop pretending Covid didn't affect how decisions had to be made. Morgan having a solid showing doesn't make the previous decisions wrong.

If they could not see in practice that Rex is not a QB and did not get the other two ready, it makes me even more nervous. Stubborn not even willing to evaluate the complete roster.

This was not an issue of whether or not Rex was good.

I don't think you understand what it takes to get someone ready to play QB in FBS football. Do you actually think Morgan is ready now? Do you think he'll be ready for our next game? When we play Louisville, he will likely have nearly as many practice reps as he would have had he taken all of the first team practice reps that Devito had in the preseason, maybe more. Yet, he will still not actually be ready. He may be a better. He may be the same. He may look worse since BC had one of the worst pass rushes we'll see this season (at least that's what I read).

How quickly do you think a staff can evaluate brand new players while prepping for a season in an abbreviated off season? How does a new OC evaluate veterans he has never worked with in the absence of spring practice? There is limited practice time and no crystal ball. Any reps you take from the guys on the two deep to evaluate unknowns are reps you can't get back. A staff goes into the season hoping their first team QB will make it through the season and probably knows it will be rough, if he doesn't.

When you reference freshman QBs getting playing time for other teams, how many of them were 1) elite prospects 2) unexpectedly forced into action or 3) able to enroll in january and go through a full spring and summer?

lol, Why do you think the staff cant see what Rex can and can't do? You really think after decades of evaluating and coaching that they can't? At some point of time you have to realize that its a process to it. There's evaluations and situational sessions in practice that you have to put players in before you feed them to the wolves (especially at that position) The staff had to make sure he was capable of protecting himself in the process of learning the offense.

Hey, when I recruit a talented freshman on my Playstation NCAA football game, he's ready to go right off the bat. Isn't real life just like that?

Lol yes. You can set level of difficulty to rookie in real life too.

Do you think Rex is ready? He is a TE at best.

You're confusing ready with talent. You don't ruin a guy's psyche or get him hurt by throwing into action too soon behind a mash unit oline during a lost season. Do you remember Andrew Robinson?

Either you have talent or you don’t. Andrew Robinson was not good as a true freshman or redshirt senior. Watched the true freshman last night from WSU he looked confident and talented. Some kids have it some don’t, throw them to the wolves see if the they have the moxy. It’s garbage saying you will ruin them

You're right, he didn' look good as a freshman... since he wasn't even the starter and played in 5 games in mop up duty. However, he looked promising as a sophomore despite playing on a horrible team with no running game and getting sacked contantly. He was never able to build on that and looked like a shell of himself as a Junior. You're right about him looking bad as a senior too, since he didn't even play QB that year. He actually was a solid contributor at TE and, by all accounts, a great teammate.

He illustrates my point perfectly. He showed talent early, got killed behind a bad line on a bad team, and never looked the same afterward. Why do that to another promising guy, if you don't have to? It doesn't matter now because the Rex injury made the decision for the team. Prior to that, it made no sense because there was little to gain and a lot to lose. You're citing development, but that's not what you really wanted. YOU wanted to see another guy play. Had Rex not been hurt, Morgan would have had the full spring and summer to develop and a real fall camp to compete for a spot on the two deep. And that's normal. That's how Marvin Graves and Donovan McNabb did it. That's how most do it. The guys you keep talking about are the exceptions.

I question how much you know, given the two years you referenced were years Robinson was a back up and then was moved to another position. Did you even watch him play?

Why are we playing tucker and others, ruining them?
Two reasons. 1) Different positions with less responsibility. 2) Injuries/opt outs.

Name the true freshmen that started over upperclassmen at the start of the season. Tucker wasn't one. The safeties weren't either. Stephon Thompson was the only one and was a January enrollee. Given that the defense is new to everyone, his youth was a smaller factor. We also had upperclassmen at LB transfer out after last season.

Garrett Williams is a redshirt freshman. Carter and Hanna wouldn't be playing if not for all of the injuries at safety. Tucker may not see the field this year if Adams and Howard aren't opt outs.

lol, why even try to get him to understand another perspective? He just wants to be right. Some people dont want to learn new things. One example of this, I expressed to him the importance of run reads, QB/RB mesh points, level 2 RPO's and how all of that effects the whole function of the offense. He responds about Rex being moved to TE previously. lol. I can't force people to understand what they don't want to know.

It’s not about being right as I am sure Morgan will take his lumps as a True Frosh. Robinson was never going to be good college QB. As stated I would play a lesser QB as far as playbook knowledge goes as long as they have more upside. Throwing them into the fire will help next year and have someone or two guys ready. My whole point with this discussion is that its unacceptable to me in today’s college football landscape with injuries to not have 2 to 3 guys ready without huge drop offs. Hopeful this years growing pains help us out for next year. Rex is a great guy by all accounts but best suited as a special teams, backup TE or emergency QB. I think its critical to get the other QB live game snaps and more practice reps as well. Babers has gone on record saying he is a good QB. Get em ready and hopeful TD come back with a great year and has two competent backups who can play and win games. It’s pretty simple really

Their QB depth wasnt good to start the year. So the whole 2 or 3 guys ready was never going to happen in 2020 season. You dont take away reps from your number 1 and 2 guys and slow down the development of the entire offense just to see if your 3rd can jump your 2nd. That would be insane. You are stunting the growth of your offense when you do that. Especially with a new OC. On top of that it hurts preparation for the opponent that week. If Morgan or Tex were that good they would have been lighting up the 1st team defense and the coaches would have been forced to give Morgan Rex reps during the team session. Obviously he didnt show enough at the time. When TD was lost, thats when his reps increased. I can tell you straight up, Chance Amie was lighting up the 1st team defense in 2018. It was clear that he was good. Staff was really excited about him. Ive heard from several people that Amie would have been the starter if he didnt screw up. Not every freshman QB is the same. 90% of starting QB's are not freshmans. There's a reason for that. Lets not focus on the 10% because that's far from the norm. If you going to be critical be critical of the lack of depth to begin the season. Amie was a big loss. They had a transfer in place that didnt fall through. I wish they would have brought another guy in.

It's not insane a number of teams are starting true freshman and have true freshman backups. It's the reality in college football. I watched Nebraska play Martinez as a true freshman and last year throw McAffrey in the mix as a true Freshman so he was ready this year. Again why was Rex the backup after they moved him to TE? Should have had a transfer QB in here if you don't know what the freshman will give you.

Again we are each entitled to a opinion on this. My goal is to get guys ready for next year, see what they have and gain experience if they have to go in a game next year. Personally I do not want to see Rex take another snap at QB.

Amie may have been a big loss, staff knew he was gone end of 2018, early 2019 would have brought in a transfer immediately. Again it's easy to second guess all of this but it's why the coaches get paid big bucks and us fans get to play Monday morning QB. Hopefully next year we are in a better position and we learned our lesson.

So that's how you've been coaching your team? How many freshman have you started over the years?

I have a question as to how all these guys were hurt preseason, we had no spring ball, limted preseason practice and these guys were all hurt prior to that. Are they so unathletic that they all tripped and fell? Injuries that are taking months to heal? Something does not add up.

A number of teams? Like 10% of P5 teams? Are you seriously living on that? This is not a opinion. This is common practice. You keep bringing up anomalous examples and acting like its the norm. We are all frustrated with the season but dont let your emotions keep you from thinking reasonably. You act like every 18 year old QB is cut from the same cloth.

Again, I have a big issue with the QB depth. Meaning I dont like the QB recruiting for the last couple cycles. I mentioned Amie because he would have been the starter while TD backed him up . Depth would have been a lot better. I didnt bring that up to justify anything. Im upset that they didnt bring in a quality transfer after the lost of Amie. Fortin was coming to Cuse. Smh

That's a good question that we'll never get an answer to. I believe someone posted something Dino said about extracurricular activities. What does that mean? Beats me.

Cade Fortin? What nixed it? You probably can't say, can you?

All I can say is that there were some negative recruiting going on at the last minute. It was towards a specific coach. I will leave it like that.
