With AW seemingly committing to SYRACUSE (making us soooooooo stacked), you gotta think Moyer will be red shirting this year? What are the chances of that? Everything I have heard regarding him is that he is way behind schedule in relation to the rest of the roster. I wouldn't want to waste a year of elgibility for him when he more than likely isn't going to get any playing time this year

If White comes in I don't see where Moyer will get any sort of minutes. With Lydon and White at SF, Lydon, Roberson, and some Thompson at PF I don't know where his minutes will come from. Maybe if a center goes down and Lydon at the 5 but even then, I can't think of many situations where I'd want Moyer playing over White, Lydon, or Roberson. Roberson is a 4th year player, White a 5th year guy, and Lydon is a possible lottery pick.

I think redshirting would probably be the best bet for the guy, baring injury that opens playing time I doubt he gets 5 minutes a game.

I don't know about that. I think he will be the #10 guy on this years roster. That guy doesn't play a lot. Don't get me wrong, he is a talented kid that will have a good career with the Orange. It just won't be this year.

I tend to agree. He and Taurean Thompson feel like the 9th and 10th men in what will primarily be an 8 player rotation. I'd expect [on paper] for them to see MCW 2012 types of minutes, that will leave some of the fanbase wanting more. Both of these guys are great system fits who project as multi-year starters for us.

All that said, I wouldn't be surprised if Moyer unexpectedly carved out some kind of niche. What I've heard about his work ethic, I wouldn't count him out, even though consistent PT seems unlikely.

Who's minutes is he taking away from? Lydon? Roberson? White (if we get him)? If we get White and you give Lydon 30, Roberson 30, and White 20 at the 3 there are zero minutes at the forward spots. What part of the pie to you take away from a lottery pick and 2 guys who have a total of 9 years experience? Sorry, he should redshirt, not because he's not capable but his services probably aren't needed this year, like Cooney a few years back.

Not sure why you put him behind Thompson? Moyer is higher rated and reportedly is more versatile and better offensively right now than Thompson. I think they are likely 9/10 but I think Moyer might offer more this season. Also, teams with only 10 scholarship players on their roster do not red shirt players. No matter how many players their coach actually uses.

I think we have become accustomed to having such a short bench and short rotation that it's weird to have depth as a strength.

I know in football, you can burn a redshirt. I assume you can do the same for BBall players.

I just hope the staff learns from the BJ/Buss thing a few years back. By not red shirting those kids, they ended up pushed out the door early (may have been anyways). If they redshirted year one, BJ or Buss might still be here contributing.

But then we wouldn't have Gillon or potentially white. So there is that.

True, but if he only gets 3 minutes per game in those preconference games he won't be ready anyway. I say, if meaningful minutes aren't in the cards redshirt him. If you have to burn it because of something unforeseen, so be it. I'd rather take a chance at preserving a year than waste a year giving mop up minutes.

If you redshirt in a program like SU, you have a big likelihood of losing future minutes to recruits down the road. It's not like FB where there are ample opportunities for future PT due to roster size, injuries, etc. That's why red shirting is rarely used in hoops except for medical reasons. Most everyone gets some minutes before January anyway. Cooney was an exception where it worked out.
