Moyer

The only reason to take a non-injury redshirt is to protect that fifth year in college in terms of eligibility. None of these kids expects (or wants) to be in college for five years. Moyer's better off fighting for whatever playing time he can earn this year.

I agree with this sentiment. I think Moyer should play. Even with limited minutes it will be huge for his development. And who knows he may turn out to be a bigger find than Lydon was his freshmen year. A lot of these guys get head issues with freshmen-itus. The sooner they get experience the better they become.

If you redshirt in a program like SU, you have a big likelihood of losing future minutes to recruits down the road. It's not like FB where there are ample opportunities for future PT due to roster size, injuries, etc. That's why red shirting is rarely used in hoops except for medical reasons. Most everyone gets some minutes before January anyway. Cooney was an exception where it worked out.

Cooney Redshirted because he was going to be behind Senior Scoop, Junior Triche, Soph Waiters and Fresh MCW. Two future NBA guards a Senior PG and a returning starter. That should tell you how rare it is for a future starter and big contributor to redshirt at SU.

While Boeheim gets the final say, this might not be entirely his decision. I would think that if he is skeptical of the playing time Moyer will get, he'll put the ball in Moyer's court (no pun intended). JB has no problem being honest with players, so he could certainly tell Moyer than ACC playing time is not going to be in the cards for him this season and ask the young fella what he wants to do.

Not sure why you put him behind Thompson? Moyer is higher rated and reportedly is more versatile and better offensively right now than Thompson. I think they are likely 9/10 but I think Moyer might offer more this season. Also, teams with only 10 scholarship players on their roster do not red shirt players. No matter how many players their coach actually uses.
Taurean has a far better chance to play and get more minutes this year in comparison to Moyer. Rankings mean nothing.

What are you basing this on? Other than rebounding name one skill area that you think Thompson will be superior to Moyer in this year. We shall see but Moyer has the potential to a better player than both CJ Fair and Tyler Lydon were as freshmen. He may not get the same PT they did because the team needs are different. Bottom line is with only 10 scholarship players, nobody is getting red-shirted. Especially since every front court player other than Lydon has major questions. Also, you need to look in the mirror and take your name to heart, WE ARE SYRACUSE! Programs at Syracuse's level do not redshirt players that can play. They play them.

Maybe...but Tyler Lydon didn't have to play behind Tyler Lydon - Moyer does.

When there's someone on the team who can do everything you can, only better, and is nearly guaranteed to play 35+ minutes per game, a redshirt might be a good idea. A little like Matt Gorman's junior year, when Warrick stood between him and any hope of playing time. (Yes, I realize Moyer's at a different place in his developmental curve, and everyone hopes he'll be more talented than Matt Gorman.)

All that said, I don't expect anyone to redshirt. If White enrolls and everyone stays healthy, I also don't expect Moyer to see more than ten minutes of game action after Christmas.

I'm assuming that he's basing it off of the article that was posted with reviews by T-Rob & Devo in which they said Moyer was behind everyone else. I'm of the opinion that it would be beneficial to both Moyer and to the program for him to redshirt this year as there's almost no chance that he's going to contribute anything at all and the benefits of being a major contributor as a 5th year sr far outweighs the 100 minutes or so that he might get on the floor this year. Still highly unlikely that it occurs. Not that it matters anymore but I always thought not redshirting BJ was a terrible mistake as he was so young for a frosh and wasn't going to contribute anything in year 1 and his mins were so minimal that they barely mattered. Kind of kid who then becomes a big time piece in that extra year.

I think he's basing it on Devo and T Rob's comments. Some people are taking them as gospel...

Too many things around here are taken as gospel even though there is literally 40 years of our coaches data that would debunk the gospel but every year people want to believe what they hear.

There is no way that a player will redshirt when we only have 10 scholarship players on the roster. It won't happen, even if it might be beneficial to space Moyer's eligibility out from some of the players he'd be competing for minutes against.

We rarely redshirt to begin with, and we certainly will not do it with only 10 players. I don't disagree with your general point.

Who's minutes is he taking away from? Lydon? Roberson? White (if we get him)? If we get White and you give Lydon 30, Roberson 30, and White 20 at the 3 there are zero minutes at the forward spots. What part of the pie to you take away from a lottery pick and 2 guys who have a total of 9 years experience? Sorry, he should redshirt, not because he's not capable but his services probably aren't needed this year, like Cooney a few years back.
Boeheim's going to play the best players', sorry to make this so simple, if he feels MM is the man for the job he's in, all this talk is pure speculation and I understand it's off-season, but no one on this board knows what kind of player MM is. redshirt? bench warmer? How are you folks so sure he won't start? JAB play's the best w/ the exeption of maybe promised starting minutes, seen many kids thru the years I thought shouldn't get minutes, what do I know?

No disrespect intended, but how do you people all know MM is not going to get minutes?

Because Jim isn't playing 10 guys and arguably the 2 best players on the team both play the same position as him and are going to eat up all of the minutes.

Whatever is the opposite of what you say is what I take as gospel.

Looking at all of the guys who will definitely be gone after this season, and likely/possibly leave early it would seem Moyer would be an almost certain starter as a sophomore. Probably better to at least have some game experience first this year, given the option.

No disrespect taken. I intentionally emphasized 'if' and 'could'. I know nothing.

Have you ever watched Syracuse basketball? I gather you haven't if you believe anything you said. I'd give you heavy odds on everything you said and would bet a small fortune on it.

I suggest you go through my previous posts over the past few years, when you do make sure you clean all the egg off your face.

Yup 10 deep. This is going to be a party!
Might as well turn the carrier dome floor into a party pregame oh wait it already is :p

You lose points for not linking the Sam Cooke original. The Southside Johnny version would have been acceptable, too.

Why do you always attack the poster. Can you just criticize what they are saying. I think the comment "have you ever watched..." is a little strong. And then based on what you said I have no idea what you are thinking. Based on the post you were criticizing, and your expert opinion, how do YOU think JB decides who plays?
